roasting in front of you Maybe it was saying football's over in Boise this year folks Maybe the snow was saying time for other things Time to move on to basketball Time to see what Dave Leach has this year Time for all the young players Scott Baker Greg Sutton Rodney Webster Kev lette Johnson Kim Metcalf Robert anner Gerald DesPres Tim Klena Jeff Caves Paul Unger Brian Hauenstein Glenn Simonton Ron Harvey and the rest to pack it in for next year when the team going to be a part of may be the most awesome in Boise history Time for Eastern Kentucky to go on and fulfill the destiny they feel is theirs just like Boise State felt last year Time for Idaho State to have a run at see ing how well it can do against the Colonels Time for Boise veteran players Duane Dlouhy Kipp Bedard Dennis Brady Bill Madinger Dan LeBeau Randy Traut man Jim Valaile Jeff Greenough Ray San tucci Chris Bell and Rick Woods to go onto other things there but the Colonels might have done something else But Bourgeau was missed Trautman tried to play like his name was Randy Bourgeau He had enough tackles for two players 19 But he be every where and as he sat in front of his locker after the game battered by the 13 games played all the emotion which had bubbled like overheated engine was gone was one of the most emotional games had plus I was relaxed and said Trautman meaning he let his emotion carry him away played well So did everybody else Eastern just a good team We made a few mistakes and they capitalized on Did he miss Bourgeau at nose guard? Bourgeau? be a mainstay next said Trautman shaking his head sadly just missed not being able to finish the year with Then Jim Criner came up and hugged Trautman and for a minute or so they were lost in their own silent communication When they were through Trautman eyes were red He still had to dress so he could go out and meet his own private fan club his mother grandmother and other relatives who waited outside the locker room door disappointed we said Traut man the man who played the season with a broken left wrist and a broken finger on his right hand we had a good year 1 nere a lot ot good players on this team Time should prove Trautman right the greater numbers of team because reorganization But next year Time for a whole set of emot ions Saturday afternoon Boise State made fifth appearance in the playoffs since they were started in 1973 The first three were in Division II the last two in I AA They did it against a team they wanted to beat a team that after losing to Boise State in 1980 did not give the Broncos the respect newly crowned royalty expect inally Saturday they got it a good team got some great said Chris Isaac the quar terback who led Eastern Kentucky to the victory about the In return the Colonels were praised had us scouted very well they took our crossing routes away from said Kipp Bedard Boise split end who hauled in four passes for 1 12 yards Saturday did a heck of a job I wish them good luck next Eastern Kentucky took control of the game early and did what it had to do to win Except for the brilliant play of Randy Traut NNC (71) Richardson 4 4 4 12 Crow 4 1 2 9 Hawker 1 1 3 3 Tristan 3 2 2 8 Smith 0 2 2 2 Ebster 2 2 3 6 Wafer 2 1 2 5 Terpstra 5 0 2 10 Jordan 7 2 2 16 Totals 28 15 26 71 BSU (98) Scott 4 5 6 13 Hazel 0 2 2 2 28 BSU 24 Hin chen BSU 2139 Jim Poore Boise State had gone into the game hoping to set up an all Idaho finale at Wichita alls but Eastern Kentucky proved too tough The Colonels with veteran quarter back Chris Isaac cooly leading things list'd two pass intercep tions to stifle the Broncos the first half and the running of reserve tail back Ed Hairston to detonate those plans in the second half It pushed Eastern Kentucky to 12 1 and ended Boise season at 1(KL hate getting this far and losing the hardest thing about said a red eyed Jim Criner after the game are a fine bunch of football players got overcome an awful lot 1 hate to have them finish the season in a game they could have won we could have gotten those points in the first half it might have made a difference We came away short handed but when you play against a good team they make you hurt yourselves Certainly this Eastern Kentucky team is an out standing group of reshman quarterback Gerald DesPres the miracle worker of mid season came off the bench with 8:03 left in the third quarter and the Broncos trailing 17 3 to lead Boise State to a near win The Bronco offense had been sputtering under sophomore Tim Klena while Boise defense led by Randy 19 tackles Ray 16 Curt 13 and John 10 man the Colonels controlled the line of scrimmage offensively Eastern Kentucky was expected to pass more but when the Col onels saw they could run they turned the keys to the offense over to the running backs Reserve running back Ed Hairston responded like Walter Payton pounding his way for 1 18 yards in the second half Roy Kidd Eastern veteran coach didn't care which way Isaac pointed Hairston as long as he kept him away from Trautman the All American tackle tried to keep it away from Traut Kidd said (Trautman) started out on the left and then he went to the right We w'ere just trying to keep it away from On one play in the first quarter Trautman was driving on his blocker when Ranard McPhaul tried to get by on a flanker reverse It had gone for a 38 yard touchdown earlier Trautman simply stuck his hand out and McPhaul hit the turf like seen a stop sign But Trautman wasn enough had some good people up said Woods the safety who kept coming up to help caught up with us They had our last three game films and they saw peo ple were pretty successful running up the middle against Things might might have been different if 6 foot 4 250 pound Michel Bour geau had been on the field doubtful they would have run the middle with Bourgeau By SCOTT PEYRON The Idaho Statesman POCATELLO The Idaho State Bengals so much as leave the shelter of their domed stadium Sat urday but still benefited from some good old Southern hospitality The Bengals gratefully accepted nine South Carolina State College turnovers six fumbles and three interceptions and advanced to the NCAA I AA football champion ship game by scoring a 41 12 semifi nal victory before 12003 in the ISU Minidome film it really look like they would turn the ball over that much We really know what to said Bengal linebacker John Olivia who recovered three fumbles think what happened is that good solid defense forced a lot of those mistakes" Idaho State the Big Sky Confer By JIM POORE The Idaho Statesman or a while there Eastern Ken tucky' coach Roy Kidd must have imagined he was being visited by the Ghost of Playoffs Past There it was chains clanking as Boise State drove downfield toward what would have been a very Merry Christmas for the 26176 fans at Bronco Sta dium and a mirror finish to last Division I AA championship game in Sacramento all I thought said Kidd whose team lost the national championship to the Broncos last year on a 55 second desperation drive got a good football team you better believe that was in the back of my But it turned out it was the fans and Boise valiant young football team who woke up to a nightmare because Eastern Ken tucky stopped the Broncos at the 33 on snow belted Lyle Smith ield to preserve a 23 17 victory and a place in the I AA finals against Idaho State The game is scheduled for next Saturday in Wichita alls By RON HURRLE The Idaho Statesman Someone brought a statistics sheet into the Boise State locker room fol lowing the BS'U Northwest Nazarene College game Saturday night Rawn Hayes got a sheet and looked at it But he looking for points That concern him He wanted to know how many rebounds and how many steals he had He had enough Saturday night In fact the whole Boise State team did enough as the Broncos claimed their third win of the season against four losses stopping NNC 98 71 in Bronco gym before a disappointing crowd of 2139 know Hayes answered after he was asked if rebounds and steal counted most still lacking in the defense I felt like I got more into the game in the second half I fi gured if I could contain my man that was important I really want to shoot the ball but they kept throwing it to me just wanted to do the best 1 could you know get more active and hustle more 1 kinda got hyped in the second Hayes a 6 8 sophomore finished with 11 rebounds He had two steals and finished with his highest point total 16 points He got eight of 10 from the free throw line In fact it was the free throw shoot ing that dominated especially in the second half The Broncos hit 34 of 38 from the line a far contrast from their 10 of 24 performance ri day night against Lewis Clark State Obviously Hayes the only Bronco with a good performance But his was important because a tough NNC defense throttled Jim Maldonado much of the night Hayes came in early in the second half and made a difference both on offense and defense Rawn decides he wants to be come a 40 minute basketball player I see much way you could keep him out of said BSU head coach Dave Leach just get ting his playing legs now no question got the It was a game of contrasts and much of that was due to fouls and free throw shooting In the first half a fired up NNC team gave the Broncos all they wanted and more The Crusaders with Dan Tristian easily breaking the BSU press trailed by just four 41 37 and reduced the inside game to nothing In fact Maldonado got only one shot in the game But the outside game kept BSU ahead In the second half when the score started mounting NNC was forced out of their successful zone and just handle the Broncos man to man In the second half alone NNC was assessed with 21 fouls and three players Dave Jordan who per formed brilliantly inside Tristian who forced the Broncos to change the press in the second half and cen ter Mike Terpstra all fouled out wanted to get a good effort out of NNC head coach Terry Layton said did a good job flustering Maldonado We wanted to run after him and see what hap Maldonado played just 16 minutes and had four free throws If there was a blowout it came in the second half Vince Hinchen Terry Lee and Ty rone Scott gave BSU a chance to ob tain that blowout with their first half shooting Lee scored 22 points including eight of eight from the free throw line on a IO yard play action pass from quarterback Ben Mungin to tight end Andre Charlton a score made possible by a 43 yard burst by All American fullback Anthony Reed Reed soon left the game unable to run because of an aggravation of a groin pull Odom too was ush ered out early the victim of a debil itating hit on his ankle kind of took us out of our said Davis who left without his two best running backs re sorted to ordering his quarterbacks to throw an extraordinary 25 times for 253 yards thought we moved the football well but get down to the 20 and the players would make While South Carolina State had difficulty with its own ball handling it could do little to stem the ad vances of ISU Machurek was red hot in the first half completing 14 of 23 passes for Broncos bombard Crusaders jirniWW tl Ji I 1 ja jBr iftSaML1 JABterVt Illi MMIWIWI 1 I 4 I IT 4 I I'! 1 1.
