The Idaho Statesman LAGSTA Ariz Mike Bra deson held the glory the welfare the well being just about everything you could think of concerning Boise hopes for football this season with three seconds left in the game and a sure Northern Arizona pass headed for Joe Taylor with touch down written all over it Bradeson a senior cornerback for the Broncos went up and knocked the almost perfectly thrown pass from Brian Potter to the ground to give Boise State a heart pounding 20 18 Big Sky Conference football vic tory over the Lumberjacks saw him coming out and then he went straight down the Bradeson said saw the quarter back running around back there and then he threw the ball That quarter back can really throw that football 1 hen 1 saw the ball and 1 knew I was going to get it" play ended a game that had been a real war for the entire 60 Mike Bradeson minutes The Broncos overcame early first half mistakes two drive ending holding penalties on their first two series and the lightning return capabilities of Pete Mandley to pull out the win before 10787 fans at Walkup Skydome no question about it we were a better football said an emotionally drained Jim Criner Boise State's head football coach did the same thing they did last year they threw new defenses at us I tell you one thing really proud of our offense than anything else it was a team effort a great team While the Lumberjacks had Mand ley and the strong armed Potter Boise State had Cedric 171 yards rushing and a three plays that 'turned the game Boise State's way One was a fumble recovery by Nick Kristoff in the end zone off a NAU fumbled punt return that gave the Broncos a 13 9 lead with 3:58 left in the first half The second was a four down goal line stand at the NAU one yard line that gave the Broncos the momen tum That goal line stand ended on a fourth and one when Potter threw' in complete to Mandley in the deep right comer of the end zone Mandley was covered heavily by Chris Bell Rick Woodsand Ray Santucci The third was an off side call on NAU after Kenrick Camerud missed a 42 yard field goal late in the third period Instead of having the ball on their own 20 NAU was forced to dig in against the Broncos who now had a first down at the Lumberjack 20 That lead to a 9 yard touchdown run by Minter that gave the Broncos a 20 12 lead with 14:55 left in the game it was Woods recovery of kickoff with 1:54 left that kept the Lumberjacks from having good field position for a game winning field goal The Lumberjacks had pulled to ithin two points of the Broncos 20 18 with 1 :54 left when Potter on a fourth and 9 play hit Mandley on a 27 yard touchdown pass Potter's throw for the two pointer that would have tied the game hit the ground in front of Rusty Summers That led to the on sides kick that was recovered and Boise drive to run out the clock that in cluded two delay of game penalties Criner said only one of the two delay of game penalties was part of the game plan happened on the first one was the phones went dead on Criner said were talking on the sidelines and then the phones went Cedric Minter The next delay of game penalty on fourth down was intentional and when NAU got the ball after Tom punt it was at their own 36 and with just 14 seconds left on the clock Potter threw two incomplete passes before unloading the bomb for Taylor which Bradeson knocked down season record moved to 2 1 while Northern Arizona slipped to 1 2 If Boise State had been able to box up Mandley on a couple of plays and keep their own penalties to a mini mum the score at halftime might not have been close But that wasn't the case Mandley whom the coaches had preached about all week to their players made sure of that He finished with four kickoff re turns for 170 yards The sophomore speedster from Mesa Ariz ran back one kickoff 92 yards to set up Northern first touchdown and his 61 yard pass reception late in the second quarter almost gave the Lumberjacks an other score But BSU came up with the goal line stand that resulted in an incomplete pass on a fourth and one and kept NAU from scoring That goal line stand resulted hen Potter fired a pass to Mandley cut ting across the middle Mandley went down the right sideline before (See BRONCOS Page 3E) Spectacular Bid races to lonely win NEW YORK (AP) Trainer Bud Delp had a dream fulfilled'Satur day when Spectacular Bid raced without answered as the week flashed past heading for Saturday night's showdown in the Walkup Skydome Could Joe Aliotti still do magic? Had the our Horsemen thrown a shoe? Was Utah good enough to be in the Big Sky? Why was Centennial on KTVB TV Saturday night in stead of the Boise State Northern Arizona game? handle the Centennial question first Actually no matter how you look at it Boise television viewers came out ahead A week ago Saturday BJ and the Bear and some thing called Goodtime Harry were on from 8 pm until 10 so at least with James Michen novel for television you treated as if your brain was filled with sand But they could have had Boise State NAU When you consider 20000 people almost one fifth of population file into Bronco Stadium for most home games then you know there would have been a lot of folks huddled around their television sets Saturday night But it wasn't to be KTVB said it wanted to televise the game just like the station did in 1978 when NAU nipped Boise State 31 30 But Channel 7 was cut off at the pass by a combi nation of competition corporate indecision and the ludicrous television policy that should become a weekly segment of Se same Street so by the time toddlers are old to vote understand it ABC TV had its greedy little bloodshot eye locked on the Northern Arizona Boise State game as a possible regional telecast this weekend KTVB said it mind doing the game either So who wins? James Michener After both Boise State and Northern Ari zona lost a week ago ABC lost interest But under the NCAA television contract affiliates get first shot at televising local games KIVI TV said it was interested but two days after ABC rejected the telecast the Nampa station turned it down That left KTVB from Tuesday on to put together a te lecast The Boise station said it could do it but ran into trouble with the telephone company KTVB said the telephone company that giant corporation called which gave us those two charmers the Princess phone and Dita Beard charged $3400 to transmit the game in 1978 This year it wanted $13000 KTVB looked at the bottom line felt it could come near to breaking even and told Wednesday morning it would televise Jim Poore the game and pay the $13000 Two hours later the Denyer office of called back and said sorry we put it together in that time KTVB is furious sure been skunked by the telephone company or some body The telephone company agreed that costs have climbed quicker than its stock But they say not their fault The CC has been deluged with complaints from compa nies that compete with for phone line transmissions Those companies claim has been undercharging for transmis sions in many cases The CC agreed and told to charge for actual use said what doing now cost said also included a lot of over time hours Besides said putting together the kind of telecast KTVB wanted requires two weeks to do an A plus job A so so job can be done in one week Nothing can be done in four days That said was the reason KTVB was turned down The company did not feel it could get the equipment needed from New York City in time So hate who you want the NCAA ABC or KIVI which has never televised a game locally and whose indecision this time un doubtedly cost KTVB the chance to bring the game to Boise The bottom line in this case is that Boise get the game What needs to be done is for the NCAA to work out a realistic contract with ABC that enables stations like KTVB not to be held at gunpoint until too late to broadcast a game like BSU NAU So onto the other questions about Aliotti and the our Horseman Aliotti still has magic even though he end up with All America stats in Boise win Saturday night Aliotti finished with 32 yards passing (4 7) and 67 yards rush ing for 99 yards total offense well below his average But once again he was a winner NAU coach Duane Painter when badg ered about Cedric Minter's 171 yards could only talk about Aliotti not really sure about any of those other guys out there but I want to say a thing or two about Aliotti a winner He makes you win He does some things that other quarterbacks just As for Minter Terry Zahner and David Hughes it was back to ripping up opposing defenses after being held to minus 5 yards rushing in that loss to Southeastern Loui siana Minter had his 171 Hughes had 90 and Zahner who only carried 10 times had 34 But among 10 carries was one clock consuming sweep late in the game that helped seal fate a smart football team You saw Zahner on that one Painter said try run out of bounds He turned back and kept the clock Meanwhile doubtful Utah is ready for the Big Sky after two down weekends after they crushed Las Vegas 45 29 That means the Utes are on the rise again and Boise performance on the road seems to indicate the same thing for the Broncos just too bad all those people back in Boise have watched.
