The cated south Ln Ha Marshall Wald and Turner were the owners Sometime later Mr Wald withdrew from the company and it was operated by Turner Brothers Trout Henry Trout being the part ner taken in to succeed Mr Wald Smoking was the principal product but a limited quantity of chewing to bacco was manufactured The third factory was that of Wald Terry It was located east of the present Norfolk and Western railway offices practically on what Is now Hotel Roanoke ground The proprietors were Marshall Wald and Terry Smoking and chewing tobacco were manufactured Rorer erected the fourth factory and it was still further east of the Waid Terry factory This happened to be the only factory burned during the tobacco period In Big Lick but Mr Rorer after Its destruction re built in on a new location the antidote de claring that having used tobac co for 15 years I was enabled to quit It without Inconvenience after using the antidote and have now no desire or taste for "Pain Killer" another Special Attention Given to Out of Town Orders This picture evidently taken before 1882 when Big Lick became Roanoke shows the forks of the road at Hanging Rock: The huge boulder known as Hanging Rock can be seen jutting from the hillside at the extreme right of the picture The road straight ahead is to Big Lick The roads forked at or near the present bridge across Mason's creek nt Hanging Rock One fork went to Salem as at present and another fork to Big Lick as now and crossed the Hollins College to Salem road at Medley At Medley the traveler went south to Big Lick and east to Botetourt Springs which was near Hollins College The signpost in the picture reads: "To Big Lick ml To Bot Springs ml To Peter's Creek Gap miles" The Peter's Creek Gap sign points at right angles to the Big Lick and Botetourt Springs sign At the forks at Hanging Rock there was a third road going to the gap still known to some as Creek Gap but to most residents of the section as Swartz's alls The old fort on the operated by Mr erguson until 1875 when It was purchased by and ishburne and was thereafter known as ishburne Brothers This factory manufactured both chewing and smoking tobacco and was the last sold finest homes in the city at the corner of Twelfth street and Patterson avenue He died a number of years ago ishburne came to Big Lick from ranklin count about 1870 and secured employment as a store clerk Afterward he engaged In the tobacco business and he and his brother Reu ben ishburne bought the tobacco factory of Isham erguson on Water street (now Center avenue) which they operated ror many years under prm name of ishburne brothers Organized Bank Mr ishburne organized the tlonal Exchange Bank and was strumental In putting the Virginia Bridge and Iron company "on its He also was prominent in church work being a leading member of Methodist Episcopal Church South and an or dained local preacher (Rob) ishburne was associated with his brothers in the tobacco busi ness and while traveling for the firm died in Texas in 1886 Many of the houses of Big Lick were constructed by Wills carpenter and contractor The house located on the corner opposite the A Is said to be one erected by him Stor ies told about him relate that It took him "a year to build a but that when it was finished it a fine His death occurred many years ago Dr Crozier was one of the pioneering dentists of early Big Lick He built an excellent home on Church avenue but later lived for a few years in Christiansburg He returned here 27? Turner 23 John Trout 37 James McD Kent 12 A Hughes 14 A 8 As bury 13 James Gambell 2 The Judges were? Mr Startzman A Turner and James Gambill with Mr Smith as clerk The 39 electors of whom James Gwaltney is the only surviving mem ber as far as can be learned were: John Gilbert A Asbury ranklin ishburne William Tay lor Baskervll Wills Moomaw John Davis Crozier John Trout A Wimbish Jami son Pobst I Meador' Irvin Terry Armstrong James McG Kent Turner Luck Trout A Turner Gambill Hale James Gwaltney I ergu son A isher Price A How ell A McD Smith Gish Wil liam Kesler Rorer Jery Warren Rob (J R) ishburne Charles Taliaferro Word Reuben Sims and Guy Stevens Mr Startzman the mayor was a well to do wheelwright of Big Lick conducting his shop on Commerce street near the point where the Chesa peake and Potomac Telephone ex change now stands His home was at the corner of Commerce street and ranklin road where Lee Junior high school was built many years later During his residence In Big Lick he accumulated considerable property Older residents who recall him picture Mr Startzman as a "sturdy economi cal" citizen He lived a bachelor and left his li brary to the Knights of Pythias upon his death several years ago He was a charter member of Oceola Lodge the lodge having been organized In the seventies and remained a member un til his death Samuel Griggs mayor of Big Lick from 1876 until 1878 was a prominent business man of the community be ing interested in the tobacco busi ness and other mercantile affairs A 8 Hughes a saddle and harness maker whose business was located first on Roanoke street left Roanoke about 30 years ago and died several years ago In California Like Mr Startzman he was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias and continued active In the order until his death James Gwaltney probably holds the record as the oldest continuous resi dent of Big Lick and Roanoke He came to Big Lick immediately after the Civil War entering the tobacco busi ness He operated a sales warehouse on Commerce street for a number of years Only One Living The only one on the voting list who is now living Mr Gwaltney is 88 years of age and makes his home with his son Wellford at 502 Virginia avenue Virginia Heights He Is said to be the only resident of the community now living who saw the first train pull into Big Lick John Trout one of the oldest resi dents of this lot ality owned a con siderable portion of the land upon which the city now stands As owner of the Trout House famous hostelry situated on the site of the present Ponce de Leon hotel he developed a wide acquaintance among residents of the entire Southwest Trout his son was a farmer and a prominent Confederate veteran He was a member of division at the Battle of Gettysburg He Inherited most of his father's estate and organized and served as the first president of the irst Na tional Bank He took a considerable Interest in political affairs and served both as State senator and mayor A Asbury was In business here several years and served two terms as postmaster taking office first in Aii enthusiastic faith in the future has marked the spirit of the National Business College since its inception It faces the future confident that for the youth of today there are golden opportunities which were not dreamed of in the half century just ended ITS HERITAGE assistants assured us that eight out of I every ten to whom it was prescribed and made Roanoke his home until Ills death a few years ago His widow la still a resident of the city her home being located on Church avenue Pobst is best remembered as the blacksmith who operated a shop at the present location of the office of the Central Manufacturing company A member of Pickett's division at Gettysburg prominent in Confederate circles and once chief of police of the town Col Armstrong conducted a shop on Commerce street during his active business career lie lived to an old age his death occur ring last year Jamison was associated with his father in law Terry In the mercantile business and later gained some prominence as a financier He was among those Interested in develop (Continued On Page 10) (This Section) Atta 1 AS A iK Jbvf a 7 7' Vs" Au isiwwjo' MBHr 'a' I drwL a a Jh fc i JU 1 i 54 1 4 LMSprH Ki I I flKi oSwan Wausibu Soda ountain Service! xV ViMMaaMB I I am imr1 wwmwi ri sasi 1 vvA JykXx 1 LvA vN wss.
