The na economy grew at an annual rate of 75 per cent in the first quar ter of 1976 an unexpectedly big gain that placed total economic output near the pre recession peak the gov ernment reported Monday Maynard Comiez acting chief economist for the Commerce De partment said it was virtually cer tain that the economy would grow at least 65 per cent and some what during 1976 This would be an improvement over the ord official growth fore cast of 62 per cent The government also reported that the over all inflation rate in the January March period was 37 per cent the lowest quarterly in flation rate in more than three years The figures show the economy continued to recover from recession at a healthy rate with a bonus of low inflation or Americans a continu ation of the trend would mean a steady rise in the number of jobs available with incomes likely to in crease faster than prices Both the figures on economic growth and inflation were contained in the Commerce re port on the first quarter Gross National Product which mea sures the value of the total output of goods and services in the economy The GNP now has increased for four consecutive quarters following five quarters of decline during the recession White House Press Secretary Ron Nessen said the ord administration was over the report cause these figures indicate the economy is recovering in a solid President is especially pleased that the figures indicate a continued reduction in the rate of in Nessen said The 37 per cent inflation rate was the lowest quarterly increase since the third quarter of 1972 when it was 34 per cent The Commerce Department said the total value of the GNP in the first quarter was at an annual rate of $12384 billion The total was just $25 billion shy of the pre recession peak of $12409 billion in the fourth quarter of 1973 The comparison does not take into account the economic growth that normally occurs in non recession years to meet the needs of the na growing population and labor force Comiez told reporters at a briefing that the low inflation rate probably will not continue in part because food prices probably will begin in creasing in future months more than they have But he said the over all inflation rate probably would be be low the forecast of 59 per cent possibly as low as 55 per cent is nothing to suggest there will be a re acceleration of in he said The 75 per cent rate of increase in the GNP during the first quarter compared with increases of five per cent in the fourth quarter of 1975 12 per cent in the third quarter and 33 per cent in the second quarter Interior Designer Greer ound Dead NEW YORK (AP) Michael Greer the internationally known in terior designer who helped Jacquel ine Kennedy redecorate the White House was found dead Monday ap
