margin to defeat the University of North Carolina Tar Heels here today 16 to 14 A crowd unofficially estimated at 9000 saw the battle At the start of the game the Tar Heels elected to receive but falling to make any headway against line kicked to midfield The Gobblers made a determined effort to score but were stopped when they attempted a pass on the eight yard line the ball rolling over tne Correspondent Harvard Stadium Cambridge Mass Oct The Army mule rode rough shod over a hard hitting but plainly outclassed Harvard eleven and 54000 football fans saw West Point conquer the Crimson for the first time in his tory by 15 to 0 Defense Crumples stonewall defense crum pled Uhder the Army battering ram and the Cadets ran circles around the Crimson Coach "Biff" Jones' eleven reaped revenge for the 13 de feats which Army suffered at Harvard hands in the days of old time rivalry Robbed of their captain "Bud" Sprague In the first period as a result of an Injury received In the opening play of the game the Army neverthe less carried on under the leadership of Cagle star left halfback who contributed largely to the West Point victory The aerial attack which Harvard had perfected especially for use against the Cadets collapsed completely and of 11 forward passes which the Crimson at tempted not one was completed Sev eral on the other hand were Inter cepted by Army players The air offensive proved far more successful with six forward passes completed out of 10 attempted The Army outplayed the Crimson in every department making 12 first downs to Harvard's eight and gaining 208 yards from scrimmage to the Crimson's 170 Gilligan Slows Up Tom Gilligan 20 year old sopho more who In early season games had gained a place as greatest running back failed to register against the defense of the Army Repeatedly the Cadets smothered his attempts at broken field running and on more than one occasion he was thrown for a substantial loss Not once did he get away to a long run such as he used to bring Harvard victory against North Carolina and Springfield while the Army more than Justified the 10 to 7 odds with which tt remained favorite Crimson fumbles were responsible for nine of the Ca 15 points Throughout the game West Point kept the Crimson out of Its danger zone and Harvard never seriously threatened to score A fumble In the first minutes of play paved the way for the Sarazcn former open champ defeated Elmer Loving and William Mitchell local professionals 4 and 3 before an interested gallery at the Roanoke Country club yesterday afternoon The man who won from Bobby Jones had a 73 for the 18 holes Sarazeu a 76 Loving a 77 and Mitchell an 83 Par for the course is 72 and best ball was played yesterday A stiff breeze Interfered somewhat wth the play adding perhaps several strokes to tlie scores but tho day was otherwise perfect for the occasion and Roanokers who chose to watch these sterling golfers In preference to the gridiron games vesterday were well re warded for their Interest applauding frequently the beautiful shots of the foursome with enthusiasm at Its height when the match was half over and the local pros were only 1 down Mitchell Is the nrofesslonal at the Roa noke Country club and Loving Is the Blue Hills Golf club pro The referee was Carl Webb the new pro at the Monterey Golf club All profits on the gate receipts will be given to the Children's Home Society on Rorer avenue Bagged Three Birdies Sarazcn snared three birdies leading in this department while the cham pion and Loving took two each both of them choosing the seventh and eighth holes for this stunt mutually tying up the best ball chances Johnny went bogy on the sixth hole taking a 6 on the 4 par ninth to mount to a 37 for the Journey out But he played every hole of the last nine In par and went 1 above par for the match Spectators applauded the long straight drives and fairway shots of the golfers those of the champion and the ex champlon especially drawing' forth low whistles and exclamations of awe while Mitchell who got most of the tough breaks of the day evidently had the sympathy of the crowd Putts for all four of them had a mean way of By A SMITH Lexington Oct Eleven stalwart "Iron men" wearing the red Jersey of Virginia Military Institute completely upset pre game calculations here today and triumphed over the University of Virginia Cavaliers on Alumni ield 9 to 0 It was one of the great est victories ever recorded by a JI I football team and the only one scored over the Charlottesville grtdders In the past five years No Substitutions Playing through the entire sixty mln ules without relief each of the eleven men who composed the lying Squad ron deserves credit for a great performance but It was the two ends Scott and Moody the great Ab Barnes and Al Hawkins who leap ed into the limelight at crucial mo ments to win the plaudits of 6000 spectators by unusual and spectacular feats irst It was Scott who threw him self In front of punt near the end of the first quarter and then gave the Utter a chase to recover the bounding oval behind the Virginia goal Sloan caught up with the ball first but had only time to fall on for a safety Then It was Barnes who despite the fact that he was watched more closely than the other Cadet backs fought his way through a slight gap in the center of the line and ran 39 yards down the sideline In the last quarter before he was hauled down oy Sloan on the 14 yard Hue And It was Barnes cool and deliberate who a moment later shot a pass with deadly accuracy Into hands behind the goal line Hawkins failed to figure in the scoring but at most stages of the game he bore the brunt of the I offense carrying the ball time after time and seldom without gain The performance of the I out fit was a revelation Admittedly the underdog as a result of Virginia's great showing in holding Princeton to a scoreless tie the Squadron completely outclassed charges In every department of the game It Is doubtful If the Red White and Yel low ever won a more decisive victory The nine point margin In no wise give a true plctura of the superiority of the Cadets Virginia Outclassed It was Just day and the Cavaliers never had a chance Not once was there cause for nervousness on the part of I partisans Virginia never had the ball In her possession In I terltory Thp closest approach to the enemy goal was their own 42 yard line They reached this point early hi the second quarter and this marked the only time during the battle that they ad vanced farther than their own forty yard marker Outplayed from the opening whistle the Cavaliers were a distinct disap pointment Sloan was forced to do virtually all of tha ball toting for the Orange and Blue outfit after Close who Is suffering from an Injury gave way to a substitute early In the sec ond quarter The Cavalier line lack ing several regulars was wholly un able to cope with the brand of foot ball displayed by the hard charging stepping Hawkins Barnes and Harner The battle today was the twenty fourth between the Cavaliers and Cadets With only four previous vic tories to her credit in the long list I has additional cause for re joicing In the victory The game proves among other things that the Jinx which has denied the Institute a victory over the Orange and Blue on Alumni ield on three previous occa viz in 1923 1924 and Presbyterian gym with the Tazewell High School team op posing Tho score being 29 to 36 in favor of the high school team Miss Obrien was one of the stars of the state for past two seasons as a high school basketball player She rates tho material of this newly organized team as especially good and expects the team to be In shape for successful playing within a short time NEW GOL COURSE TO OPEN NEAR STAUNTON Sub Quarterback Makes Long Runs in Sewanee Game 11 Innins Drive Starting a drive on their own 39 yard line the Pony Express pushed over their second and winning touch down in the fourth Danville high school Cardinals lost a hard fought game to Jefferson high school of Roanoke here this aft ernoon by the score of 33 to 0 Although outclassed and outweighed by the visiting eleven tha Danville team put up one of the finest fights of tha year The game started off fast and the Roanoke team was able to score In the first quarter The visitors threatened to score several more times In this quarter but the de fense of the locals strengthened and held them Williams did most of the ball carrying for the Roanoke team and the entire back field showed up well The line of the Jefferson high team was one of the strongest the locals have faced this season with no large gains being made through that section Holcom and Harris showed up well for the Danville team although the entire team played their best of the season The locals were outweighed about twenty pounds to a man but put up a brave fight The majority of the sec ond team of tho visitors saw action In the contest TAZEWELL GIRLS ORM A BASKETBALLTEAM Winning Streak Of Centenary Is Nipped By Baylor 1 Charleston Va Oct 20 The Mountaineers of West Virginia hit their stride against Washington and Lee to day trampling the Generals 23 to 0 their annual clash Hartrug Keefer and Stumpp led the vicious Mountaineer attack which rip ped through the line for three touchdowns and forced an auto matic safety In the final period by crowding a Washington punter back of the end zone Washington and Lee was never able to maintain a steady at tack and West Virginia made frequent substitutions in the final period In the first quarter neither team was able to score but West at tack kept the Generals puzzled A diversified attack carried the ball to Washington and 13 yard line but Keefer fumbled and Washington and Lee recovered and punted out of dan ger umbles on several other occasions benefited the Generals The West Virginia effort reached Its height In the second period The ball was advanced steadily by a series of line plays and off tackle smashes un til Keefer went over for a touchdown A few minutes later Hartrug pulled a 25 yard pass out of the air and crossed the goal line for another touchdown A placement kick failed after the first touchdown but sailed straight between the bars after the second Hartrug was responsible for the third touchdown soon after the opening of the second half shooting oft left end for a 35 yard gallop across the goal line Again the extra point was added from placement In the final period the Mountaineers gave the reserves an opportunity making frequent substitu tions After losing the ball near the goal line the West Virginia forwards rushed Thibodeau In making a punt and he stepped out of the end zone to give the Mountaineers an automatic safety West 'varied quick charging defense Rockne un folded a whole bagful of tricks In an effort to turn the tide but the Hoosiers still In the erratic stage of develop ment fotind the powerful Tech for wards too much for them or the keen eyed Georgia secondaries too foxy to be outguessed Tech stole Its thunder at the outset by completing two long passes one for 14 yards and the other for 11 to pave the way for a dash through tackle by Waner Mizell versatile half back for the first touchdown Mizell whose running passing and kicking was an outstanding feature of the game received tho first pass from Durant and hurled the second one to Thomason who made a fine running catch on Notre Dame's three yard line It took only two plunges from there for the Tech star to tally Tech clung grimly to this slim mar gin until the closing moments of the game when Lumpkin sensational sophomore fullback plucked one of Johnny Nlemlec's pasess out of the air and raced 28 yards to the Hoosier 3 yard mark This time Randolph took the ball over and Mizell added the final point of the game with his toe riiccked Counter Thrusts In between these two touchdowns brilliant defense checked every counter thrust by the Rockne Ramb lers who missed two bright chances to score In the second and third pe riods After their most sustained march of the game an advance of 66 yard to 6 yard line on an as sortment of plays featuring and Henry Wasps proved too much for Coach "Pinky" Roanoke Col lege Maroons here tonight and won 21 to 6 It was homecoming day at Emory and many old grads came back to see Coach undefeated eleven down Roanoke Captain armer and Littlejohn were the stars for Emory and Henry while Dotty Rutherford was the big gun In the Roanoke ball tot ing Roanoke College scored the first counter after armer had fumbled A pass Deitrlck to Gilbert was good for seven yards and another Dietrick to Williams scored the touchdown The point after touchdown was missed by Gilbert Penalties Costly Emory and Henry
