KINGDOM OF TOYS lolKIXI)l'l By Mark Madden Post-Gazette Sports Writer MORGANTOWN, W.Va. West Virginia University Coach Don Nehlen had just stormed out of his post-game news conference after yesterday's 27-0 loss to Virginia Tech, taking exception to an innocuous request to expand upon his team's obvious shortcomings. But it was OK. For the first time all day, a WVU player picked up the slack. "I don't know if this team has the character to rebound," said tackle Joe DeLong.

"Nobody around here likes anybody right now, from the bottom to the top. "Every player on this team, with one or two exceptions, is pointing fingers. We can't get anything corrected, because no one owns up to any mistakes." Which was a problem yesterday, because there were plenty of mistakes to be owned up to as Virginia Tech (6-2) humiliated the Mountaineers (3-5), handing them their second straight shutout loss. Very few of the 59,819 on hand went the distance, and those who did voiced their displeasure. The loss dropped WVU's Big East record to 2-2 and made their Carquest Auto Parts Bowl hopes explode like a rear-ended Ford Pinto.

The Big East's third-place team automatically goes to the Carquest Bowl in Miami on Dec. 30. Virginia Tech, 4-1 in the Big East, won its sixth straight game. In fairness to Nehlen, he has every right to be upset. What once looked like a promising season has fallen apart thanks to injuries and ineptitude.

"Going into the year, I thought we'd be a pretty good football team," Nehlen said. "But we haven't improved any. If you don't get better, you get worse." Said wide receiver Rahsaan Vanterpool, "We come out, and it's like we don't even know what we're doing." West Virginia had virtually no offense. The Mountaineers gained 66 yards in the first half, 138 yards on the day. They rushed for 15 yards total Their deepest penetration was the Tech 25, twice.

Quarterback Chad Johnston "led" the WVU offense, hitting 7 of 19 passes for 85 yards. He was also sacked five times. His late-game replacement, Eric Boykin, was sacked three more times. Said Nehlen, "Offensively, we couldn't muster anything. We couldn't run.

We tried trapping, sweeping, going off-tackle, reversing. They controlled the line of scrimmage." The biggest hope for WWs offense was that the Hokies' defense would eventually tire itself out jumping around celebrating big plays. Defensive end Cornell Brown celebrated the hardest, but then, he had a lot to be happy about the 6-foot-2, 246-pound junior was in on three sacks and made another tackle for a loss. Virginia Tech got on the board 6:03 in when Atle Larsen hit a 43-yard field goal. The boot capped a 16-yard drive which started when WVU punter Brian West's 14-yard punt went out of bounds at the West Virginia 43.

Another West punt went 20 yards and out of bounds at the Tech 43 to set up the Hokies' next scoring drive, capped when Dwayne Thomas ran for an 8-yard TD on the first play of the second quarter to make it 10-0. The march took 10 plays. "Our kicking game, our punts, hurt us pretty badly," said Nehlen. Virginia Tech more or less salted the game away when Johnston's pass was tipped by linebacker Myron Newsome into the hands of cornefback Larry Green, who returned the interception 37 yards for a touchdown to make it 17-0 with 13:54 left in the first half. The Hokies put together two scores in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin.

Tech's balance was impressive. Jim Druckenmiller was 12 for 27 for 123 yards, Thomas rushed for 86 yards, Ken Oxendine rushed for 74 yards. The Hokies totaled 362 yards on the afternoon. ttttftn nnniAi S402 RADIAL FR440 RADIAL (Ql I More durable 1 A Ho5'80HI3 I I Our verydsy I Priced m.iy Firestone! The Eagles had one last chance to score in the waning seconds of the game, but Hartsell overthrew an 18-yard pass to Todd Pollack in the end zone as time ran out.

Edwards was about the only bright spot in the game for Notre Dame (7-2). His rushing total was the highest for a Notre Dame running back since Lee Becton ran for 177 yards against Southern California in 1993. Ron Powlus turned in his second-worst performance at Notre Dame, finishing 6 of 10 for 71 yards and one touchdown. Powlus' worst game also was against Boston College, when he went 5 of 21 for 50 yards last year. Powlus also fumbled the ball twice.

Boston College's offense wasn't much better, though Hartsell had a little more luck in the air. Hartsell was 15 of 25 for 149 yards, but was intercepted twice. Running back Justice Smith rushed for 97 yards on 25 carries. Miami 36, Temple 12 MIAMI Jammi German caught two touchdown passes, including a 77-yarder on Miami's first play that sparked the Hurricanes to a victory over Temple. German made six receptions for 169 yards.

Although unranked this season for the first time since 1985, the Hurricanes (4-3, 3-1 Big East) remained in contention for the conference title and a New Year's Day bowl berth. Temple fell to 1-7 and 1-3 before Miami's homecoming crowd of 28,147. Eugene Culbreath, a junior making his first career start, became the first Temple player to rush for 100 yards in 24 games. He gained 124 yards on 26 carries. Danyell Ferguson scored on runs of 23 and 2 yards in the second quarter to help Miami rally.

The game's most unusual score came when the Hurricanes attempted an extra-point kick after taking a 10-point lead. Allan Jackson blocked the try, and teammate Lamond Adams picked up the ball and ran 76 yards to score two points for Temple. In developments elsewhere, the NCAA has charged the University of Miami athletic department with rules violations, but the 10 long-anticipated allegations included no surprises, athletic director Paul Dee said. Dee declined to disclose the allegations. An NCAA official said the allegations involve major violations.

In a probe of Miami that began four years the NCAA investigated financial aid fraud, drug-testing improprieties and an alleged play-for-pay scheme involving rap star Luther Campbell. -Relitl up to 5 qts.1 OW-30 oil Road test vehicle I (IT auDHCaDiei recycled anieezestai seawulinart $13H99 $I1(199 $i99 I I 1 Mnat II at. 1 Most vehicles. Mostly in that second quarter. The game was crawling along when Panthers defensive end Zatiti Moody forced Lucas to cough up the ball, and linebacker David Sumner recovered at the Rutgers 37. Gonzalez then hit Jells for a 37-yard touchdown 1:34 into the second quarter for a 7-0 lead. The Scarlet Knights answered with an 8-play, 70-yard drive, with Battaglia holding off safety Jay Jones in the end zone on a 13-yard TD strike from Lucas to tie it 5:26 into the quarter. On the next play, Harris scored on a 74-yard run probably his most impressive carry to date.

He broke a couple of tackles at the line and sidestepped cornerback Michael Sandys final attempt. "It was a draw and I just cut through the middle, then got around one guy," Harris said. "People told me that then Sandy had the angle on me. I saw him and I was going to stiff-arm him, but I just ran as hard as I could and when he dove at me, I just picked my leg up." A high snap foiled the extra point and it was 13-7. Terrell Willis then returned the kickoff 83 yards for a TD 30 seconds after Battaglia's, giving Rutgers a 14-13 lead.

Pitt took one more lead, 16-14, on Chris Ferencik's 27-yard field goal. But Lucas tossed a 20-yard scoring pass to Steve Harper with 48 seconds left in the half. Butler fumbled the kickoff return over to Rutgers' Chris Anzidei, and Lucas threw a 21-yard TD to Battaglia with 26 seconds left. With Pitt staring at its longest losing streak since it dropped 10 straight spanning the 1971 and '72 seasons, Majors sighed and said he is just happy to finally reach an open date in the schedule next week. NOTES Willis, who ran for 68 yards, became Rutgers' all-time leader with 2,960 in 28 games.

Rivers later left the game with a shoulder injury Graber termed "very serious. The Scarlet Knights' 42 points was their best effort in the 13-game series against Gonzalez drove Pitt down the field to open the quarter. He hit receiver Curtis Anderson for a 14-yard completion at the Rutgers 2, and Anderson turned toward the goal line and lunged. The ball popped loose and bounced just into the end zone, where safety, Paul Rivers picked it up and raced 100 yards to score. That gave the Scar- let Knights a 35-16 edge 3:05 into the second half.

"We've had a lot of balls on the ground a bunch of them and they have not bounced our way all year," Rutgers Coach Doug Graber said. "And when you're in a stretch like we're in, that's just the way it seems to work. "But Rivers obviously made a heck of a play, and that really turned the game around at that juncture." Giving Pitt the benefit of assum- ing it would have otherwise gotten into the end zone, it was a 14-point swing. But was it a fumble? 5 "I thought it was a bad call," said Anderson, who had seven catches for 98 yards. "I stretched with the ball and the ground knocked it loose.

I looked up for a whistle, but they didn't see it that way." 1 Gonzalez was hurt later that quarter. It was announced as a twisted right ankle, but after the game, he nad ice on his knee. Pitt Coach Johnny Majors said he substituted with former starter Ryan over redshirt freshman Matt Lytle because of Ryan's experience. The fifth-year senior led the Pan- thers on a 66-yard, 9-play drive that ended with his 5-yard scoring pass to Sadiq Durham on a corner route and then a 2-point conversion completion to Mark Butler with 7:51 left in the game. That pulled Pitt to within 35-24, but on the Panthers' next posses- sion, Ryan under heavy pressure on fourth and 5 at the Rutgers 26 was picked off by defensive end Charles Woolridge, who returned it for a TD, the game's final score.

"I don't know when I've seen more ridiculous things happen to us than in this game," Majors said. iaMM miaii IbbmI niiTr inwfi mr naaliaaAiAaia- nmliiTliilaiaTiaiiial Tan alul mdmkM fi" 0 0r ItiBGESTOnE THE NEXT REVOLUTION IN TIRES PRO TIRE 325-3811 ALLISON PARK 487-8840 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 MONROEVILLE 856-9380 Monroevtlle Mall Open Sunday 10 A.M.-4 P.M.
