Each woman-and the earliest shoppers usually are women-has her own gift-buying formula. One will begin with the difficult names on her list.

Another will buy stocking stuffers "to got them off my mind," before she embarks on major purchases. A third will spend her first few tours of stores just getting ideas. Among ideas for Christmas giving in 1977 are nandbags. In their favor: Their price range adapts itself to everyone's budget. The size is determined only by the size of the woman who eventually will carry it.

Best of all, the shapes and fabrics are more exciting than ever before. IT IS THE YEAR of the snake for some who prefer reptile textures. Because American ecologists have denounced the slaughter of alligators and crocodiles, snakeskin has soared in popularity. Seine of it is shaded in monochromatic hues. Some has acquired a metallic luster.

Those who recoil at reptile will find a vast array of fine kidskin, fabric and man-made materials all molded into receptacles for a woman's totable earthly possessions. Capeskin and ultrasuede drape like cloth. And cloth itself is prevalent, perhaps in brocades-gold or silver embroidered on black satin for elegant events. For pure luxury, there are bags made from antique Japanese obis-long sashes of heavy ornamented silk which bind the waistlines of native Japanese kimonos. SHAPING UP the materials are such silhouettes as the duffel for day or night, drawstrings, flat swaggers with removable shoulder straps, shopping bags with shirred front pockets in which ride small clutches.

Boxes of ebony or metal have drop-in handles when a handle is superfluous to the occasion. Outlining some of the handbags is fringe, cording or piping to match or contrast with the color of the body fabric. Utilitarian, frivolous or a combination of both, the handbag hits a new high in originality this season, and originality is what most Christmas shoppers seek. fit) A Large pumpkin of a hag in mellow goatskin tilings over the fhouldrr via drawstring closing, above.
