TEXAS PlgeI1A usiness Engineer combines chemical knowledge, ecological questions A degree in chemical engineering can lead to all sorts of careers. Many executives and administrators majored in chemical engineering. Research and development personnel also have backgrounds in this field. Safety supervisors, plant production engineers and others have experience in the area of chemical engineering. For Dave Frashier, his degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, in chemical engineering, has opened up a new arena that of ecology.

Frashier is an engineer with Dow Badische Co. Frashier, an environmental group leader at the Dow Badische location in Freeport, works on projects concerning ecology guidelines and regulations. For instance, part of his job is to determine how to meet 1977 waste water quality requirements. "We're gathering experimental data to make the additional improvements that will be he explains. Also according to Frashier, "Right now, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed rules for the Frecport area that would nearly prohibit new construction for us unless we eliminate almost all air emissions in our new facilities." One important factor in Frashier's work is relating actual process know-how and experience with rules and regulations being written by government agencies at state and federal levels.

Part of his job is in either Austin or Washington, D.C., when environmental hearings are held which are pertinent to Dow Badische. Frashier then represents the industrial viewpoint. Another aspect of his work is industrial hygiene. "This is an area of great concern protecting our workers from chemical exposure, noise and heat. We are always trying to improve and correct working conditions." Solid waste disposal is another facet of Frashier's job.

Some waste materials are buried in thick impervious clay containers. "We are very careful in how we dispose of wastes," he says. Some types of solid wastes could endanger underground water supplies if not properly handled. Other solid waste are not burned because of the toxic gases that could be produced. All in all, Frashier finds himself in a diversified job position, but his background as a chemical engineer has stood him in good stead.

He began with Dow Badische almost five years ago in the Special Assignments Program for college graduates who want to experience several areas of the industrial scene before deciding on a permanent career. Ecology held Frashier's interest. Dow announces changes in marketing personnel Gerald "Jay" Hornsby and A. Arnold Butterworth Jr. have been given new responsibilities in the Dow Chemical U.S.A.

He will assume his new responsibilities by June 1. Hornsby joined Dow in 1960 and held a number of positions as a field salesman, product sales manager and group sales manager. In 1970 he was named director of Marketing for the Plastics Department, and from September 1972 through June 1973 he served as director of Marketing in Dow Pacific as part of Dow's Job Exchange Program. In 1973 he was appointed director of Marketing in the newly created Olefin Plastics Department.
