from nnanders Dear Ann Landers: 1 work in a nursing home mainly for elderly people who need to be rehabilitated They have had a variety of illnesses mostly strokes arthri tis and broken bones We have helped many peo ple walk again talk again and return to a life worth living My anger is directed against the families of my patients or example: I have in my care a woman who is grossly obese We put her on a diet but her daughters are full of guilt because they feel their mother should be living with them So they attempt to ease the guilt by bringing her candy cakes cookies everything she eat This woman is gaining weight in stead of losing and we do anything about it Another patient who had a stroke could not feed himself We worked diligently with him and he was doing well Then his daughter decided we were being mean to her father She started to come to the hospital daily to spoon feed him Now he has become totally dependent and re fuses to do anything for himself I sign my name because nurses are ex pected to be compassionate toward everyone I guess a failure because my compassion goes primarily to my patients Please print this Somebody might learn so Seattle Dear Seattle: As one who is close to the Rehabilitation Insti tute of Chicago I am well aware of the dedica tion of physicians nurses and therapists According to Dr Henry Betts medical direc tor of the Institute they encounter very little of the recalcitrance you describe at his facility be cause educating the families is considered part of the treatment When relatives understand the importance of cooperation they become part of the team Dear Ann Landers: Please tell your readers family planning for pets will be a reality soon A dog food with a birth control ingredient is being tested in eight cities One company ran tests for two years on 200 female beagles None became pregnant The US has 30 million dogs and 27 million cats underfoot This will solve a serious problem Pass the RP Dear RP: When the product is available I hope it is well advertised because I sell anything in this column no matter how good for the handymari By ANDY LANG Last year I received a 5 per cent tax credit because I had bought a new home that qualified for it My house is now up for sale and I have been told that I will not be able to keep the credit that 1 will have to return it to the govern ment Since it amounted to $2000 I am very much concerned What is the story on this? A You have not furnished enough informa tion on which to base a precise answer However the National Association of Realtors has just ad vised its members of the circumstances under which tax credits must be returned ull repay ment must be made if the proceeds from the sale are not used to purchase another new replace ment home within 18 months after the sale If the new house costs less than the amount received from the present sale a share of the credit pro portionate to the difference must be repaid There are some exemptions from this rule One is the death of a person having a legal or equitable interest in the property Another is the complete or partial destruction of the house by a casualty such as a fire or storm Also coming under the exemption rule would be a case in which the house was condemned And finally there is this exemption in the event of a di vorce or legal separation in which one spouse re tains the house as a principle residence The ramifications of this entire matter can get very technical so if you are faced with the possibility of returning the tax credit it would be well to get the advice of an attorney for the gardener By GEORGE ABRAHAM it true that we can dry flowers in our microwave oven? I heard it is much quicker and wonder if you have any other information on using the Ray Rothenberger an Extension horticultur ist sys that flowers can be dried in a microwave oven Pack them in silica gel or a borax sand or cornmeal sand material in a Pyrex dish and bake them for 30 seconds to several minutes de pending on the texture and quanitity of blooms After baking leave flowers in the supporting material overnight or as long as 21 hours We hope our readers will try this and pass along your results to us Also has any one used kitty litter for drying flowers? Please write and tell us what you does it work? A raised some good honesty plant (Lu naria) and do not know how to care for il Also please tell us how to care for Honesty also called money plant and are easily handled this way: Right after the seed pods mature hang them upside down until thoroughly dry Next rub off the outer cov erings to expose the bright or Some people like to spray me discs with gold or aluminum paint others leave them untreated Strawflowers (Helichrysum) come in colors of white yellow orange pink and red Cut the flowers before they are completely open Hang them upside down in a garage or attic or stand them in a jar Have you ever tried drying goldenrod? Some species are still nice and fresh and can be cut and dried by hanging them upside down in a ga rage Another good item for drying is the Pee Gee hydrangea good to cut the flowers be fore they get too large and while they are nice and pink when they are showiest After frost the color changes to beige and brown GLifestyles THE REPORTER DISPATCH White Plains NY riday October 81976 GBcInd ex
