Bearded, long-haired and bespectacled, Stallone plays a tough-minded New York cop who risks his life daily as a decoy to ensnare muggers and street criminals. Stallone and partner Billy Dee Williams are enlisted for a special unit designed to capture Europe's most dreaded terrorist, a killer so cold-blooded that he calmly bombs a London department store, killing not only a friendly sales clerk but innocent shoppers including children. Dutch actor Rutger Hauer makes his American film debut in this icy role, with beautiful Indian actress Persis Khambatta as his assistant. There's a lot of vicious gunplay in "Nighthawks" and a scene in which commuters on the Roosevelt Island tramway are taken hostage. Both these elements may be disturbing to sensitive moviegoers who may not be ready yet to have such headline shockers employed for entertainment purposes.

But Americans prove remarkably resilient about such things. If real-life ambushes become commonplace, who is left to flinch at imitation shoot-outs? Stallone does a fine job, downplaying those aspects of his personality that most closely resemble Rocky Balboa. Lindsay Wagner has a small role as his ex-wife who works in the fashion world. Director Brace Malmuth is making his feature-film debut after 10 years making TV commecials. He has obviously learned bow to keep a narrative moving speedily and efficiently along.

There's little that's original about "Nighthawks," even though it is a crisply made, tough-minded action film. The film is rated because of strong street language. 1VU 11JLU VIC (Continued from Page 19) tion of the sword from the stone. Temporarily, at least, we feel we are on familiar ground. But Boorman never lets his movie descend to the commonplace for long.

He gives us, in all, about two hours and 15 minutes worth of flesh and fantasy, culminating in a pseudo-religious quest for the grail and the death of Arthur. This is the whole story, in a treatment that is determinedly serious and respectful. The only humor comes from Nicol Williamson's deli-ciously baroque performance as Merlin, who wears a silver skullcap that makes him seem outer spacey, which is not inappropriate for a man who lived in the future as well as the present. The other noteworthy performance comes from Helen Mirren as the evil Morgana. Nigel Terry as Arthur does not dominate the film as he should, although he is convincing as he ages from boy to old man.

Nicholas Clay is a handsome hunk as Lancelot, and he and Cherie Lunghi make a seductive couple as they mate outdoors in the chilly mists of Ireland, where "Excalibur" was shot Boorman's concept was to portray a time when man turned away from the supernatural to the natural and this theme is consistent throughout "Excalibur." The film is rated because of arm-hacking brutality and tasteful nudity.
