HovrcT-er. Fred and Milo are nchednlcd to appear in a bout in Baltimore and Fred thinks thnt what Betty does not knovr won't hurt her. XVIII T WAS aD set to make some re•*- mark, but Dawn beat me to it. She began to talk real fast in hog Latin, and I tumbled right away. There was something she wanted to talk to me about without letting Milo know. He looked bewildered the- way he usually did, but I covered up for her. "Let's take in the rest of the show," I suggested, and you would have thought she'd understand I was only playing along the way she wanted, but no. "I don't think either of you would be interested,* she said. "I've finished my act and the other stripper is terrible. Not only does she have no figure, but even less talent Besides, your car is parked where there is only hall-hour parking. Milo, run along and put it in a garage and we'll wait for you." He gave us both a sort of funny look, which made me hope that he wasn't jealous of Dawn and me, while knowing that Betty Jane was the only name in my date book, but he turned and nodded his head a couple of times and did like Dawn told fcim. He was no sooner gone than Dawn turned to me. "Look, I happen to like that little guy and you can make of it : what you want." "I Uke him too," I said, not war ting to make anything of anything. "It's a redeeming feature," she answered. "Honeyboy — I hope you don't mind being called that, because it's the way you're being billed knight-"I'm in a "Meaning that my match is off?" I asked. "It doesn't matter about me, just so Milo gets a good spot." "You really mean thatl how you feel?" "Sure," I said. "If I messed up anything for him, just count me out. that's all." "Why, I do believe you mean it! Maybe we can take the poor guy off the hook." "First of all, I should know what hook he is on," I said. * • * iiVPTELL. this promoter, Benny " Lefkoe, isn't exactly a friend of mine, but he'd like to be. He runs a show every week, so it looked like a good spot for Milo. Then, when Milo called up about you, it so happened that Benny was trying to make a j match for this Pancho Lopez who he's been playing up." "A Cuban?" I asked. "Mexican- % You'll be giving away 10 pounds, and he's fast. iHe's won his last nine bouts by falls. The crowd hates him, but they keep coming in the hope he'll get thrown. Milo saw him work last week and says you can take him. I wouldn't know." As usual, I was modest about myself; it's only about how good Milo is that I ever sound off. "I'm not worrying," I said. "And if this Mexican is the hook you think Milo is on for recommending me, forget it Most of them can't even speak English, much less wrestle." "I don't get your point," she said, not trying to. "I saw th* announcements in the paper last night, and instead of having Milo matched with one fellow in the final, the way I understood from Benny, there are three other* oc the mat with him." "What they call a 'rassle royaL' You don't need to worry- Milo will throw those other fellows in rapid succession, or «il *t oo« time." -What I « *"* * won't like this business about the molasses." "Molasses?" I asked. •*You heard the first time. A whole barrel of molasses is to be poured on the mat for the rassle royal It says so, right in the announcement." I was worse than dumfounded, I was speechless. "Milo won't like that," I said. "He takes his wrestling very seriously and he is too sensitive to be treated like a stack of pancakes. Why doesn't he wrestle the Mexican and let me slush around in the molasses? I won't care." I tell you, the look that came on her face then was so pretty thai if I didn't already love Betty Jane Blane, I could have fallen hard for Dawn O'Day. "You will?" she said, practically hugging me. "It gets my goat, the way people laugh at Milo anyway. You can imagine how they'd howl at seeing him in all that molasses. Let's go see that Lefkoe lug right away." * m « "DENNY LEFKOE would not have tipped the scales at more than 120. Strictly light- weigh., what I mean. After Dawn told what was on her mind, this Benny pushed his hat on the back of his head, where he'd been wearing it all this time. "Sorry, kid. Believe me, I'd like to make the switch just to please you. but there are a dozen reasons why I can't. First of all, I've made a reputation for giving the fans what I advertise, and the ads and the window cards all say that Pancho Lopez' versus is Honeyboy Hackenschmidt. There is a gimmick there, too, which is one of the reasons I gave you the spot when Dawn asked me. You met Pancho yet?" I had to admit I hadnl. "He's the ugliest-looking man you ever saw. His face looks like it was put through a meat grinder. Matching him with a good-looking guy like you was sheer inspiration. Will the fans go for it? The answer to yes, although which way I don't know. They may be for you, because of the way they hate this Lopez, or they may root for him to spoil that profile Maybe h* will, WE BUY USED FURNITURE PHONE 3-3122 Wade Furn .Co. YOU MUST ACT NOW!
