Cory Shaffer, 6-4 senior, and Ray I'm a Sox fan, you know. Since Tuesday night, I'm also a Cardinal fan. The Cardinal I'm referring to is Gary Cardinal, Newton High School basketball player. Cardinal, 5 foot 9 senior who transferred to Newton last fall from Bridgeport, was a sight to behold as he led a 70-47 rout of Marshall in the Eastern Illinois Conference tournament at Casey. He scored a season high of 21 points, connecting on nine of 17 field goal attempts and three of four free throws.

And he quarterbacked the Eagles' offense in excellent manner. Cardinal was easily the outstanding player of the session, which included a Paris victory over Robinson. He sank two long shots in a first quarter string of five straight Newton baskets which amounted to a kayo punch. And he contributed two more baskets early in the second quarter to keep up the pressure on the Lions. In addition to his outcourt sniping, Cardinal several times drove through the Lions' defense to slam in baskets.

Maybe this was what caught my eye; the drive-in basket is somewhat of a rarity nowadays among the preps. I asked Newton Coach Ken Ludwig if this was a typical Cardinal performance. "Just about," Ludwig nodded. "He hasn't scored this many points before but he has played very well. Yes, getting Cardinal has helped us a great deal." Cardinal played on the 1962 Bridgeport team which was North Egypt co-champion and which included all-stater Steve Cunningham.
