Current series sales over 81000 20 THE CHRONICLE THURSDAY JUNE 5 1969 Not all gloom but CHESHIRE FARMERS IT BY WETTEST SPRING KNOWN SURPRISE DEFEAT FOR JANETTE FIFTY GOLDEN YEARS FOR FORMER LICENSEES BRITISH Universities international Janette Champion was surprisingly beaten in the 100 metres at the Cheshire Athletics Championships held on the Hartford School campus track on Saturday Janette lost in a "photo to the little-known Stoke-on-Trent sprinter Christine Mulliner both being timed at 134 seconds It was a second slower than best probably because of the strong head wind Sheffield University student Jane Perry did the double in the 400 and 1500 metres and the one local success was Fish of Mid-Cheshire AC who won the javelin event with a throw of 113ft 4ins Senior results: 100 metres Mulliner 134 200 metres: Champion (Stretford) 284 400 metres: Perry (Wirral) 584 800 mtres: Harrison (St School Wallasey) 2 mins 325 secs 1500 metres: Perry 4 mins 459 secs Long jump: Lewis (Liverpool) 17ft 8ins Javelin: Fish 113ft 4ins Discus: Harrison 98ft 2ins IK 5 'T3 ERSONAL SERVICE AT PRICES TO SUIT YOUR POCKET! because of the slow grass growth His 90 milkers have had to have the run of the fields Both winter and spring com and potatoes he said were doing well but it would be another two weeks before he could hope to start silage of which he normally makes about 1200 tons The picture elsewhere however is very different Mr Herbert Dutton The Byatts Guilden Sutton has his crop of 120 acres of spring barley yellowing right down the leaf a circumstance that applies quite widely in other parts With his land waterlogged he has twice had to bring his cows at their home on Monday A GRAND ENTRANCE Parade THE 'DO-IT-YOURSELF' CENTREZt theless he has hopes of a good yield from his winter-sown crops At Gorstella Kinnerton Mrs Janet Chadwick who grazes 125 cows and 80 young stock was about six weeks later in starting than last year but unfortunately bad enough silage to last out Out of gear Normally about 1500 tons is made here and on her other nearby farm Bretton Hall where there are 115 milkers and 70 young stock but work has not yet started at either place The effect of the weather in short has been to throw a usually smooth working farming system quite out of gear grass Is in one hell of a said Mr John Witter of Wheelock Hall Sandbach who on his 165-acre farm normally pad-dock grazes 70 cows on 35 acres but who has had to add another seven acres from the 47 he had reserved for hay and silage Mr Witter like others has had floods and one of them swept through a field of barley I lose he said it was left looking pretty sick It has been the worst spring I can remember in 29 Wellington weather all the On a brighter note Mr Stephen Hassall who farms 230 acres of medium loam at Willington Tar-porley reports that his 100 acres of com and 42 acres of potatoes look fairly well although running late His cows were turned out in mid-April and he said have never done better with milk than this Such is the advantage of being on higher lighter well-drained land THE worst spring I have ever was the general verdict of farmers in Cheshire when asked by me on Wednesday last week for their views on how the continual rain following the cold conditions of 'March and April had affected their farming Some idea of the exceptionally wet conditions farmer have had to contend with is revealed in rainfall figures from the Cheshire College of Agriculture Reaseheath Nantwich The average rainfall for April is 153 inches but in April this year it was 225 inches The average rainfall for May is 21 inches but up to May 27 this year it was as high as 656 inches more than trebled The average rainfall is 27 inches so that in May this year up to Tuesday last week we have had nearly a quarter of the average total for the year! Flooding has been widespread in the county on the lower heavier land cows turned out earlier in the month have in many cases had to be brought in again to save pastures from heavy and then because there was no more winter bulk feed for them had had to be put out again despite the damage they might do Milk Milk yields generally are down with the seasonal of production still to be achieved Grass now growing abundantly is about three weeks behind time with the result that silaging which should normally be in full swing now has not so far as I know made any start at all in Cheshire But while the general picture is depressing it is not all gloom Mr Donald Frith of the Old Pale Eddiabury who farms on lightish land told me that things there were in pretty fair shape although he has been unable to start paddock grazing this year By Oscar Turner indoors after turning them out something he has never had to do before The conditions have meant that his paddock grazing has had to be done on a very tight acreage indeed and milk from his 142 cows has dropped by 50 gallons a day Mr Alex Barrie Park House Farm Hatherton Nantwich who came from Scotland to Cheshire about 12 years ago cannot remember a wetter spring Although usually a very dry farm the land has been badly and he has had to give up paddock grazing his 170 milkers He has had more foot trouble with his stock than ever before and he views the prospects for his 80 acres of hay rather dimly no silage is made here Weeds One of his big problems Is weed growth since it was impossible to carry out spraying at the usual time Mr John Edwards at the 400-acre Stretton Hall Malpas who grows 200 acres of com and finishes off bullocks on the rest has had to restrict his intake of stores by 20 per cent due to the way his leys suffered earlier on His winter wheat and early-sown spring barley he said look reasonably well but late-sown barley has suffered drastically and yields he thinks are bound to suffer Never FORMER landlord and landlady of the Arms Hotel Middlewich Mr ana Mrs George Henry Gib-bins celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Wednesday next Mr and Mrs Gibbins who live at Wynroy 54 St Middlewich have lived in retirement for the past 16 years after partial disablement led to their decision to leave the licensed trade The gardens surrounding their neat detached home are a credit to 76-year-old Mr Gibbins who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis still manage to do a bit of gardening I am happy out there with the spade am still going strong but I am not as fast as I used to he said cheerfully His wife Annie is confined to a wheelchair but shares the same bright outlook on life Married in 1919 at Goostrey Church the couple kept the Arms for 15 years until it was taken over by their son Mr Leslie Gibbins now a newsagent of Leadsmithy-street FOOT OF WATER ON MOTORWAY Squads of motorway maintenance gangs were working over the weekend to reinstate a 50-yard stretch of embankment off the south bound carriageway of the M6 between Knutsford and Holmes Chapel after storm washed down tons of soil swamping the hard shoulder and slow lane with mud and water more than a foot deep in places Nearly a mile of traffic queued up before Police and motorway gangs mopped up The water cascaded down the embankment after an adjacent field flooded and the motorway drainage system clogged up with mud COMPANY REPORT step out in (CHESTER) Serious injuries A motor-cyclist David Win-stanley of 16 Radcliffe-road Sandbach was seriously injured on Friday when he was involved in a collision with a car 1941 has just arrived MR GEORGE MORRIS could not understand the mesage on the postcard delivered to his home at Malkins Bank Sandbach last week Then it clicked when he noticed the postmark Birmingham August 19 1941 It was a card from a friend delivered by the postman just 28 years late Mr Morris explained that back in the early war years he sent a precious sack of com to a fellow pigeon-fancier Mr Frank Fields from Birmingham He never knew what happened to it until last week when the card arrived at his home complete with an orange twopenny stamp with King head on it He never heard any more and thought he had been forgotten but all the time a reply was on the way Before it finally did arrive it was refranked May 20 Mr Arthur Holliday postmaster said it was impossible to account for card must have slipped through our sorting department without even being he said Sand iw ay and Cuddington YOUNG WIVES Members at their meeting last week observed a silence in memory of the late Mr Parker Mrs A 47th Annual General Meeting of Bradleys (Chester) Limited was held at the Grosvenor Hotel Chester on Wednesday 28th May at 3 pm Mr Leete FCA (Chairman) presided and was accompanied by Messrs Gray (Vice-Chairman) Wm Dutton FCCS AIAC (Managing Director) and Jeffcoate Directors Messrs Buckmaster FRICS FIAS FRSH Taylor AIAC AMBlM (Secretary) and Woodhouse MInstM Associate Directors Mr Hope FCA of Messrs Overton Sait and Co Birmingham (Auditors) Mr Wood of Messrs Jolliffe and Co Chester (Solicitors) Mr Moorley Westminster Bank Ltd Chester Mr Denny (formerly Registrar Westminster Bank Ltd) Mr Fitch Rowe and Pitman (London Brokers) and Mr A Tod FCA Ashton Tod McLaren (Northern Brokers) do not qualify for membership of the existing contributory pension scheme which is funded with an Insurance Company It will be of satisfaction to you to notice from the Consolidated Profit and Loss Account that by providing these funds for existing Pensioners we have effected a saving in liability to Corporation Tax in the sum of £43735 It is with great regret that I have to record the deaths of Mr Keith-Hill and Mr Wm Povey former Directors of the Company who each gave a lifetime of service to the Company The full effects of the appointment of Mr Wm Dutton as Managing Director have been felt during the past year and it is very pleasing to be able to report on the effective team spirit which has been built into the Company I would like to take this opportunity of thanking him and indeed all Directors and employees for their co-operation during the past twelve months TRADING POLICY Mr Wm Dutton Managing Director in seconding the adoption of the Report and Accounts said: In seconding the adoption of the Report and Accounts last year I referred to the introduction of a harder selling policy and 1 am happy to tell you that this is being relentlessly pursued Unprofitable branches and unprofitable lines of merchandise are being eliminated I have been told from many quarters that our advertising principally on Television has given the Company a new and improved image and it is our earnest endeavour to improve it even further The Chairman has referred to some new branches that will be opened this year and some have already been signed and sealed for next year We are concentrating on larger units in better shopping positions in the towns which have the greatest trading potential 1 have been tremendously encouraged in my first complete year as Managing Director by the wholehearted support from all sections of the business for all our operations to make this group into a first-class multiple retail organisation In seconding the Chairman's proposal I do so with every confidence in the future of this Company RE-ELECTION OF DIRECTOR Mr Jeffcoate was duly re-elected a Director of the Company and suitably expressed his thanks A cordial vote of thanks to the Directors and Staff was proposed by Mr Denny and Mr Hooper The Chairman on behalf of the Directors and Staff expressed appreciation of the kind remarks CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT The Chairman Mr Leete in submitting his Review of the Accounts of the Company for the year ended 31st January 1969 said: I have pleasure in reporting to you on the Accounts of the Company for the year ended 31st January 1969 The Trading Profits for the year have amounted -to £311336 and show an increase of £87797 or 393 over the profits of the previous year The sales during the year have increased by £346831 to £3799853 which is a pleasing 10 increase Indeed as you will see from the Financial Summary included with the Accounts this is the best Trading year achieved since 1965 and marks the first stage of the recovery 1 reported to you during August 1968 During 196869 the share capital of the Company was increased and Trustee status obtained Your Directors concentrated upon improving the trade of the Company within its existing units and five uneconomic branches with no potential were closed They also inaugurated Training Schemes for the Personnel at all levels and improved the retail image and organisation of the concern During the current year your Directors plan to expand the Company by the opening of branches in new towns and the removal in certain instances to improved trading positions in existing towns At this date plans are well forward to open shops in Brighton Croydon Keighley Liverpool Walsall and Wolverhampton and for the removal into better trading positions of our branches in Birkenhead Bootle Burnley Chester (Foregate Street) Lancaster Leek Rawtenstall Stockport Ulverston and Widnes Budgeting the future is invariably a difficult task and this is made hazardous by our present Government whose immense mass of ever-continuing legislation and bureaucratic control affect almost every long-term decision In spite of these difficulties I look forward with quiet confidence to the future profitability of the Company NEW PENSION FUND You will notice from the Consolidated Profit and Loss Account that a transfer of £98096 was made to the Trustees of a newly-created Pension Trust Fund It was decided to effect this appropriation of funds to provide capital for the Trustees to enable them to take over from the Company the liability to pay the non-contributory pensions to the Staff and Directors and thus not only to give greater security to the Pensioners but to relieve the Company of this liability in the future The Fund will pay the pensions of all persons who DO YOU OFFER A SPECIAL SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC This feature appears weekly in the Northwich Winsford and Middlewich Chronicles at a very attractive cost For details please telephone Northwich 2272 and ask for Mrs Glover or Mrs A Kettle at Winsford 2367.
