4 Tulsa World May 1 2002 Long way there Little River Band recaptures heritage with first new CD release in By John Wooley World Entertainment Writer It was 1979 and bassist vocal ist Wayne Nelson was playing with singer songwriter Jim Mes sina who had been booked as the opening act on a Little River Band tour Two years later Nelson was singing lead on Owls" one of the biggest hits recorded by the little River Band having become a full fledged member of the group And two decades after that still hanging in there sing ing lead vocals with the band worked out all right" said Nelson in a recent telephone in terview were between bass players back then and they wanted someone who played bass and sang 1 was in the right place at the right Nelson and lead guitarist vocal ist Steve Housden are the only members of the current group who were with the Little River Band during its hit making days of the late 70s and early also the only American in the all Australian group Perhaps most important he was one of the members who helped get the venerable band into the studio to cut a new disc in 2001 its first in 12 years CONCERT Little River Band with Mary Cogan opening When: 8 pm Thursday Where: Cain's Ballroom 423 Main St Tickets: $21 at the Cain's box office Starship Records Tapes Mark lt Shop in Promenade Mall irey Brothers Music Powersports The Wall In Bartlesville or order by phone at 747 0001 Why did they take so long be tween records? some of the people who were in the band been in the band from the beginning had their walls up and were just not interested in creating new he replied you decide to do a new disc you have to write new songs and in teract with the other band mem bers rehearsal time studio time and then you have to do promotion once done talking to people and going to the radio stations There were people in the band who said just do what we Little River Band will perform Thursday at Ballroom 423 Main St do and take the money and go if we continued in that realm we were going to stagnate and die seen lots of bands that have just wast ed away like that Plus too short to travel four or five months a year on a bus and not try to do something creative and The newest recording is We Started a collection of nine new Little Riv er Band tunes packaged with fresh recordings of two major hits and next CD won't have any hits revisited but we know if this one would be our only shot or not so we wanted to put those two on as a reflec tion of our he ex plained want to ig nore that heritage in fact very proud of it the years everyone re acts to he add ed heard so many sto ries there are stories of guys in the Gulf War having River Greatest go ing out each morning with Is on Its and coming back in every night with I sing lead with the band now and was the first song I sang lead on When I played solo around San Diego been doing it more acoustically more Tex Mex and 12 years that's how we did it on this Nelson said that the songs from We Started fit so seamlessly in the show that people even know new think from one of our old he said because the arrange ment with the harmonies and guitars are molded to what the Little River Band is the first thing we think about when we sit down to do a new song We want to tell a great story with great harmonies our heritage The story has to be told with harmonies that come on as strongly as other bands come on Those harmonies as you might imagine are also played up in the live shows always start out a cappel la and starting a lot of shows with Way he said one of our biggest hits but become syn onymous with us like Cali has become synonymous with the Eagles a Little River Band signature there that hits the audience and they know the Little Riv er and they can settle in to the Most Tulsa stations unable to get digital signals on air SPECIAL ILET $995 Complete Dinner Eet 1945 2833 51st 742 9097 By Rita Sherrow World TV Editor To digital or not to digital? deadline for put ting up a digital signal has most Tulsa television stations saying we would if we could but we Three will meet the deadline six have been granted waivers two have to comply until 2003 and one is waiting for an answer to its application The ederal Communications Commission mandated that local commercial broadcast stations have to begin carrying both an analog (in homes now) and a digital signal by May 1 To make things even more confusing the CC has assigned separate digital channel numbers to each station Stations will retain their ana log channel numbers until 2006 or whenever 85 percent of the households in the country can receive the digital signals (with the currently ultra expensive dig ital TV sets) The CC has not set a dead line for stations to begin airing high definition signals KJRH channel 2 flipped the switch to add its digital channel channel 56 in January KOTV channel 6 and KTPX UH channel 44 will join the digital revolution Wednesday on channels 55 and 28 respectively The stations are not required to transmit the digital signal 24 hours a day so programming times will vary or example KOTV will broadcast from 7 to 10 pm Monday Saturday and 6 to 10 pm Sundays to take ad vantage of the CBS digitally broadcast prime time programming Most CBS pro gramming is broadcast in high definition but KOTV will not be passing through that signal yet said Don Dobbs director of en gineering The rest of the stations are another story KRSC UH channel 35 and KO ED channel 11 will not have to comply until May 2003 be cause they are noncommercial public television stations Their equipment is on order KTUL channel 8 which was originally assigned digital chan nel 58 has requested and re ceived a six month extension and a new number 10 The ABC affiliated station expects to be digitally up and running in the next three to six months ac cording to Pat Baldwin presi dent and general manager ox affiliate KOKI UH channel 23 and cable chan nel 5 and UPN affiliate KTO UH channel 41 and cable chan nel 10 also received extensions from the CC and plan to broad cast digitally around June 15 KOKI on channel 22 and KTO on channel 42 KOKI which launched its 9 pm newscast on Super Bowl Sunday was ahead of the game It built its new building with the digital future in mind Installa tion is under way according to Hal Capron general manager KDOR UH channel 17 and cable channel 17 is planning to be on air digitally on channel 15 by some time in October ac cording to general manager Rick Bryant KWHB UH channel 47 and cable channel 7 has been as signed channel 48 which is where the station will begin broadcasting later this year The equipment has been or dered but has yet to arrive Digital channel 49 is the num ber assigned to KGEB UH channel 53 and cable channel 23 The station expects its signal to be on air sometime within the six month extension period ac cording to general manager Wal ter Richardson KWBT UH channel 19 and cable channel 12 is in an odd situation The latest Tulsa TV station to sign on (Sept 12 1999) the WB affiliate has a DTV application pending with the CC and has yet to receive an answer or an assigned chan nel number expect to see those local digital channels on your cable system anytime soon That situa tion is still under discussion 12 ASTROLOGY PSYCHIC ADVISOR Answers questions Love Business Etci 660 0733 At TULSA MOVIES 8 I Across
