D-6 riTTSRURGH POST-GAZETTE TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1 1 2001 LOCAL NEWS Residents ask school board (o get behind Thompson Protest by 30 'targets Ashcroft's antitenor tactics ALLEGHENY COUNTY PUBLIC DEFENDER Lawsuit settled Allegheny County has settled a lawsuit with three former public defender employees who complained they were subjected to abusive treatment when they worked for Kevin Sasinoski, who is now a Common Pleas Court judge. Former secretaries Denise Gannon and Margaret Muscarella and former assistant public defender Elizabeth Petrone will share a $172,500 settlement that county Manager Bob Webb approved last week. In their lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in 1999, the women alleged that Sasinoski screamed obscenities, threw objects, pounded his fists and otherwise interfered with their work after he became public defender in 1996. In early 1997, the women filed a complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, alleging sexual discrimination.

In retaliation for the complaint, they were transferred to less desirable jobs in the county, the women claimed in their lawsuit. Americans are paying attention to the hardline tactics of U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft, particularly his refusal to reveal the names of those detained. One speaker, the Rev. Phil Wilson, co-chairman of a group called the Anti-RacismCivil Liberties Committee for the Mobilization for Peace, said afterward he was especially concerned when Aschroft suggested to members of Congress last week that those who criticize his actions are aiding the enemy.

Wilson wondered how far the administration will take its power to spy on people in a climate in which President Bush enjoys overwhelming support. While most people gave the rally a passing glance or ignored it, a few stopped to listen. Minor Christian, an organizer with the Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Union in Washington, D.C., was on his way to a hat shop when the protesters caught his eye. He said he welcomed the fact that the United States tolerates such public dissent but said he hasn't made up his mind about the issues. "I'm not sure if Ashcroft has crossed the line, but he's damned close," he said.

"All this secrecy, I just don't agree with that. I'm not saying the administration is totally wrong. But we have to be careful. I realize this is a delicate situation. It's like a balancing act." The protesters later walked up Liberty Avenue to the federal building, where they hung around on the sidewalk while one of them went inside to present a list of demands to the U.S.

Immigration and Naturalization Service. component in the school's plan during an earlier hearing. "Cloak yourselves in the mantle of responsibility and see that the children come first," said Louis Kendrick of East Liberty. He challenged members who won election because of promises to reopen schools to reconsider those pledges. He asked them to follow the examples of former President Lyndon B.

Johnson and Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, who had conservative images but ultimately endorsed liberal policies. After the meeting, board President Jean Fink said she supports Thompson's educational agenda, but a "survey taken called Election Day" in which she and other members who want to reopen some schools won handily, demonstrated strong public support for doing so. She said she plans to formally propose reopening Arlington Middle School and Spring Garden and Bon Air elementary schools at tomorrow's agenda review meeting so that the change can be part of this month's budget vote. By Carmen J. Lee Post-Gazette Education Writer For the second time in two weeks, a cross-section of Pittsburgh residents urged city school board members to support Superintendent John Thompson's proposed $489 million budget for next year.

Echoing Thompson's own phrase of "staying the course," 20 speakers at last night's budget hearing asked the board to expand technology in the district and not to reopen schools that were closed this fall. Several also endorsed the superintendent's educational agenda for Pittsburgh Public Schools and requested continued support of magnets, specialized education programs used to promote integration. Some speakers chastised members of the new board majority as caring only about the students in their neighborhoods. Others asked how some board members could consider cutting technology spending when supporters of a proposed charter school called City Charter High School repeatedly lauded the technology ByTorstenOve Post-Gazette Staff Writer One driver gave them the finger and a U.S. Drug: Enforcement Administration agent called them "freaks," but for the most part 30 people protesting the government's tactics in the war on terror went unmolested yesterday as they rallied in Market Square and then marched on the federal building, Downtown.

The demonstrators, made up of members of various human rights organizations, are angry at the Justice Department for detaining more than 1,200 people, most of them of Middle East-'ern descent, since the Sept. 1 1 terrorist attacks. Carrying signs with such slogans as "Stop the Racist Backlash" and "Defend Freedom: Release All Detainees," they railed against what they describe as government abuse of civil liberties under the guise of national and a law enforcement apparatus operating in secrecy in violation of the U.S. Constitution. Several speakers warned that not enough OBITUARIES DelloStretto OIRARD R.
