Mail scams target of new crackdown WASHINGTON (AP) Federal, state and local law enforcers and 1,500 private sector volunteers launched a campaign today to thwart direct mail scams that cost senior citizens and other consumers millions of dollars a year. In kicking off the campaign, officials announced 190 law enforcement actions against fraudulent direct mail schemes, including one that used over 200 different business names and bilked consumers out of $100 million annually. The scams targeted in the sweep conned consumers with range of deceptive claims. They included misrepresentations that a mailing was from the government, deceptive claims that consumers have won something, misrepresentations that consumers have unclaimed assets, phony billing scams, bogus advance fee credit card offers and false contest claims. "Today, we're announcing a four-pronged, federal-state, public-private initiative to target the scam-mers who use the mails to con consumers," said Jodie director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission.

Her car, with the lights on and her wallet inside, was found abandoned in an intersection less than two miles from her workplace. Since then, police and volunteers have searched the area between Boggstown and Franklin on foot and by airplane, while more than 20,000 fliers were posted. Furrer said police have no leads or suspects in Eckart's disappearance.

The home purchase was delayed a week until the error was corrected. By then the Benners had to pay an extra point on their loan, or $1,300. The law likely would not have made much difference in resolving a problem that developed overnight.

But Mrs. Benner said "it would have helped a little, by putting the onus back on them" and by making contact presumably easier with credit officials scattered across time zones. Associated Credit Bureaus trade group for the industry, says credit bureaus have voluntarily adopted many of changes required by the law over the past few years. Among the steps largely in place; are the 30-day limit on investigations; and an $8 cap on the cost of a routine credit report to consumers, said Barry Connelly, group president.

Prosecutor agrees to change of venue for one suspect in cat burnings BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Monroe County Prosecutor Carl Salzmann has agreed to a change of venue for one of four Indiana University students charged in series of cat-burnings here this summer. Salzmann said Tuesday that he agreed to a defense request to try the misdemeanor animal cruelty case against 19-year-old Blake Case in Morgan County due to pretrial publicity and overwhelming public reaction. "The amount of mail, it's unprecedented," Salzmann said. "We didn't even have this kind of publicity on a double homicide." No trial date has been set for Case.

To have fought the change of venue request, Salzmann said he would have had the difficult task of gathering for the court record everything that had appeared about the case in newspapers and on radio, television and the Internet Safzman said he anticipates a change of venue request to be filed later this week by the attorney of 1 9-year-old Errett Rouch. Two other men, Scott Painter, 19, and Joshua Noel, 18, had their initial hearings Tuesday after they received summons to appear to face the cruelty charges.
