I remembered my Columbia kids had been in the same frame of mind, but I told myself it didn't mean any- 1 thing." Illinois and NYU met next in the 1962 Holiday Festival in New York.

This news pleases Illinois Coach Pete Elliott, top strategist for the East, who's scheduled a double workout today to welcome the late-arnving quar terback.

In nearby Palo Alto, the aerial-minded West squad plan ned a single workout after strenuous session Christmas Day. Elliott nearly bad a nervous breakdown Friday when Stau bach completed a 35-yard run by collapsing on the one-yard line in Miami's North-South Shrine game. In fact, Elliott placed a trans continental phone call to the Orange Bowl to check on Stau- bach's condition which was A- OK. He was just pooped. Staubach must beat out Pitt's Fred Mazurek, a quarterback more noted for his running, al though be completed some impressive passes in practice to Jim Jones of Wisconsin and Jim Whelan of Boston College.

"We've installed only. 12 to 14 plays so far and Staubach should assimilate those in a hurry," said Elliott, "and get right on what new ones we'll put in between now and next Saturday." Liston Fights With Police Denver, Dec 26 (AP) Former world's heavyweight boxing champion Sonny Liston was jailed by Denver police Friday after a pushing and shoving fracas which pitted Lis- ton against 10 patrolmen. While the former champion -struck no blows during the me-1' fee, police reported that Liston "kept bouncing back out of the- car like a rubber ball" when officers attempted to take him 7, into custody. Liston and a friend were pull- ed over after two patrolmen became suspicious when Liston TBy Ben Funk Of the Associated Press Miami, Dec: 26 John Huarte won the battle of the quarterbacks handily, but his North team had to go through a hair-raising fight, be fore it finally conquered the South in the most exciting game of the Shrine Christmas football series, 37-30. Only five seconds were when Huarte, Notre Dame's Heisman Trophy winning quar terback, whipped a five-yard clutch pass to his teammate, Jack -Snow, to break a 30-30 deadlock the South had forged with a gallant comeback just two minutes earlier. This and a magnificent game- long performance won Huarte the vote as the outstanding North player.

And he clearly outshone the two South quarter backs, Navy's Roger Staubach and Tulsa's aerial record-break er, Jerry Rhome. In the winning drive, the Huarte-Snow combination, so effective for Notre Dame all season, clicked three times. The North had the ball on the South five when Snow grabbed the last one for the TD. "The ball was tipped just a little, and Jack had abandoned our pattern, but I knew he'd got it," said Huarte. "They came up on me." said Snow.

"I just curled back and hoped he'd find me." The South had rallied from a 30-6 deficit to tie the score at 30-30. They were helped by the special rule for the game which permits the trailing team to have the option of receiving or kicking after a touchdown. North Coach Ara Parseghian of Notre Dame said he thought the rule "terrific for the All- Star game. It makes for an in teresting game although it tougher on the players." Huarte, who emerged from obscurity to lead 'Notre Dame back to the football heights this season, completed 18 of 28. passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns, topping the combined throwing yardage of Staubach and Rhome.

On the South side, Bob Hayes, Florida Olympic sprinter; stole the show from the quarterbacks to be voted the outstanding player on his team. Hayes operated as a split end. After a mild first half that ended with the North in front 7-6, the Yankees exploded for 23 points in the third period on a 25-yard sprint by Perm Stale Tom Urbanik, a 20-yard pass from Huarte to Army Carl Stichweh and a 44-yard runback by Rudy Kuechenberg of Indi ana with a pass stolen from Rhome. His decision came just before he left for school from his Crystal Ctiy home, where he had been spending the holidays. Tne news undoubtedly is a crushing blow to the New York Knickerbockers of the NBA. who were expected to snatch Bradley as a territorial choice in the 1965 draft Instead, American basketball fans probably will be seeing the last of Bradley on the basket ball court when he ends his collegiate career in the spring.

He had led Princeton to Ivy League titles his sophomore and jun ior years, and the Tigers are eyeing a. third straight, with Bradley averaging more than 27 points a game. Sun Bowl Game Today El Paso, Dec. 26 (AP) A couple of veteran campaigners, Georgia and Texas Tech, met here today in the 30th annual Sun Bowl foot ball game. Brown's late season brilliance, plus the fact he never has been on a championship team, figure to make him extra dangerous against the Colts. In his only championship appearance, Brown was a rookie when the Detroit Lions humbled the Browns, 59-14, in 1957. Baltimore Coach Don Shula knows what a problem he bas in trying to stop Brown. "He's probably the best offensive player in pro football and can bust a game wide open," said Shula. "We can't leave it up to one-man coverage because he'll break away from one tackier." Says Colt linebacker Don Shinnick: "We've got to surround him." The Browns scheduled a naif-hour workout today but the Colts, who arrived Friday night, planned to skip any workout to day.

They were to look over Municipal Stadium's field and possibly hold strategy sessions. The field is covered and in good shape.
