Halit Ost 24th 25th 18th Officer 2 Palace Road Kingston-npon Hstlsmtrt Halit Oet 77th 21th ftth CHILDREN MUST WAIT letter replying to the Ministry's communication dealing with the Bcloe the chief education stated that the authority disappointed that the Ministry included in the 1960 programme expansion of secondary view of the Ministry's Inability to award any priority to the proposed secondary schools at Bletchingley Til-ford and Milford which might hinder the expansion of agricultural production Mr Nugent said the cut was one of many that were likely to bo made in their capital programmes When members of the committee were recently looking at plans for the new school to be built at Ash the question of standards was much in their minds he said and they discovered that the cost of the school would be enormously more than the estimated figure The chief reason ipart from high building costs was the very high standard of accommodation which must be put into new schools Mr Nugent said he believed the standard was 120 square feet per child compared with 90 square feet before the war One of tbe last schools to be built with the latter standard was Nonsuch and the committee could get anywhere near that as a general standard he would feel very satisfied BETTER BUT FEWER must be quite dear" Mr Nugent continued "that If we are going to have something like 331 per oent better schools we shall get that much less schools tnd we shall continue with a few very good schools and a large number of schools which ought to be Improved or replaced" It seemed to him as a practicable and realistic approach that they should seriously consider whetner there was not a good case to be put to tbe Ministry for revised standards of a more realistic figure The Rev Dr Calnan asked It would not be possible to obtain permission from the Ministry to use what were called temporary buildings little more freely Roman Catholics in Surrey would have to find about £000000 and throughout the country between £50 and £80 millions to meet Government school standards They ought to be able to use the material that was available Tk 'Li'f f- A AMENDING ACT NEEDED Aid Marshall of the Surrey County Council said he had spoken in tbe House of Commons about the excessive standards He noped that one day there would be an amend mg Hducsttoo Act were many thing? that would have to be wtfibid for Britain Hu iMUdli reality of economic events might make It impossible to carry out parte of it A long discussion followed Doubts were voiced as to whether under present economic conditions certain ports of the policy could be given effect It was generally agreed that "The Right Road for Britain" contained much excellent material and the meeting left it to Mr Nicholson's judgment whether or not it would be necessary to voice any criticisms at the conference Sir Crawford Douglas Jones chairman of the Faraham Conservative Association announced that for fam lly reasons he was going to "The Right Rond for set the stage for this week's deliberations Its challenge of the stupid Socialist assumption that the State can do nothing for anybody unless it does it for everybody sign posts the way to retrenchment And in a pregnant phrase it sums up the difference between the Conservative and the Socialist philosophy The former seeks to sustain and strengthen the cliararter of the freedom-loving Briton while Socialism seeks to subordinate human nature to the soulless State machine Set the spirit of Britain free and we can recover our greatness It will give much satisfaction to Conservatives in Surrey that two of their leaders Mr Godfrey Nicholson MP and Mr Lionel Heald took part in the first debate Their speeches gave emphasis to the general desire of the people tliat the
