fuel in its decision Thursday night to con tinue the excise tax exemption for ethanol "ICGA applauds the bi partisan ef forts of the Illinois Congressional delegation to head off this effort to eliminate the tax exemption We would like to specifically thank Con gressman Tom Ewing for his efforts on this important said ICGA Director Mike Clark Homer "The exemption was put in place to encourage ethanol production corn utilization economic development and more dependence on a domestic fuel source rather than reliance on foreign oil Those reasons are still valid today" Clark said Congressional ethanol supporters responded aggressively to the effort to eliminate the ethanol tax exemp tion which began with Rep Bill Archer of Texas chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee Congressman Tom Ew ing Pontiac played a pivotal role in keeping the exemption in place The 54 cents per gallon exemption is scheduled to be phased out by 2000 Archer sought to have 'it eli minated early supposedly as bud get cutting measure although the program has no direct cost to the federal government Action (n the House Rules Committee assured the exemption would remain intact until 2000 Elimination of the tax exemption could have dire consequences for the Illinois economy according to the University of Illinois Department of Agricultural and Consumer Econo mics Two primary concerns cited by the of I computer modeling study show: Corn prices could drop as much as 24 cents per bushel along with soy bean and wheat prices cutting rev enues to US producers by more than $26 billion per year Employment would decrease in Illi nois by more than 6000 jobs 1500 directly related to corn processing and 4500 jobs related to the in direct effects of decreased economic activity ICGA members and com farmers in general responded once again to the need to write letters and make tele phone calls to congressmen to en sure their continued support for ethanol Congressmen Tom Ewing Denny Hastert Ray LaHood Dick Durbin and Glenn Poshard and Governor Jim Edgar were key players in this effort to band ethanol supporters to gether and point out the contribu tions of ethanol to the nation's eco nomy energy self sufficiency and cleaner air The concept of incentives to meet the energy needs of the nation is nothing new Oil subsidies have continued throughout the 80 year history of petroleum By comparison ethanol supporters like the Illinois Corn Marketing Board are working to ensure we won't need government support in the near future Cora producers are investing corn checkoff grants to 47 Illinois soil and water conservation districts "These grants are an investment in the continued fertility of Illinois farmland" the Governor said "They will also help enhance the quality of surface and groundwater in the state and protect urban areas from soil erosion" i Administered by the Illinoip De partment of Agriculture the grants are part of the state's Conservation 2000 program Conservation 2000 is a long term multi agency effort to protect natural resources increase ability of results to other areas of the state evidence of partnership with other organizations or indivi duals and presence of matching funds or in kind contributions Each district could request multi ple grants but the total amount awarded to any district could not exceed $5000 Districts could devel op and submit proposals jointly pro vided projects benefit each district involved Champaign County received $4550 for soil conservation and Douglas County received $5000 for soil con servation and water quality Student Council is again planning a Thanksgiving food drive this year to help people in Unit 7 and also the children of Matthew House in Champaign Many people are pro bably aware of the urgent need for Underscoring his longstanding re lationship with the state's flagship university and his awareness of issues facing the higher education community state Senate President James "Pate" Philip has named state Sen Stanley Weaver chairman of the Senate Higher Education com mittee "Sen Weaver has the experience the dedication and the necessary understanding of today's colleges and universities to lead this commit tee as we look ahead to the next century" said Philip (R Wood Dale) "I know the committee will be well served by Sen Weaver as it studies and debates legislation that will shape the system of higher educa tion for years to come" Weaver said he was pleased with food by local agencies that provide for the needs of those who seek their services This need is made more critical because of cutbacks in government aid The Student Coun cil would like to bring this to the the appointment and looks forward to serving as chairman "I believe in a strong system of higher education in Illinois" said Weaver (R Urbana) "We have some of the best schools in the country here in Illinois including right here in Champaign Urbana I welcome the opportunity to help shape legis lation that will ensure a high qua lity of education continues at our colleges and universities" The Higher Education Committee considers bills affecting the state's colleges and universities including community colleges Issues brought before the committee in the past have included scholarship criteria structure of the state university system tuition waivers and other financial aid matters attention of every student and adult in Unit 7 and ask that everyone share some of what they have with those who are less fortunate The Unity Education Association has again generously volunteered to help by assisting the grade school and junior high students to be a part in this endeavor The nuns and teachers of St Thomas School of Philo have also again pledged their generous help The Student Council is very grateful for this additional assistance and would deeply appreci ate the help of all individuals or or ganizations in Unit 7 Boxes for non perishable food items will be placed in all stores and post offices in our community In addition jars for cash will be placed in most business firms Cash contributions for the purchase of food may also be mailed to Unity High School Student Council PO Box Tolono IL 61880 All students will be asked to bring non perishable food items to school from November 13 through Novem ber 20 High School students will also be asked to sacrifice their
