Critics say that Drinkwater does not deal with Lincoln as a historical character -nor as a political philos-: opher. The play centers rather on the profoundly romantic interest of Lincoln's character, handled with ad-mirable restraint, simplicity and dignity. An American correspondent in London who witnessed the play said that Drinkwater had written the play as if Lincoln were a figure of such surpassing greatness that he belonged to the whole world rather than just America.
