Hill of Profpact avenue, spent Sunday with relatives at Sloata- Coroww'i In- Horrid edr-Th Hftllldaj-i Fiend In Ho- nun Farm. One of the most horrible tragedies that has been enacted anywhere in this vicinity for yeari was unearthed yesterday morning. It occurred about two and a hall miles fromBurllngham, In the town of Makakatlng, Sullivan county, twelve miles from thin city. A double murder of two unknown women, the disappearance of an old man, and a woman suspected of the horrible crime In custody, tells the rtory. For the past few days the neighbors relatives of Paul Halliday, who resides just off the road leading from Burllngham to Ellenvllle, have not seen anything of the old man and his wife's conflicting stories as to his whereabouts lead them to Institute a searching party.

Young Paul Halll- day, James Henry, John Tears and Peter Rutan, with Justice Abram Tkayer started out to look for the missing man, His wife told them that he had gone beyond Bloomingburgh to attend to a recent purchase of land. They watched the house night and day but did not see the old man come home, which led them to believe that there bai been foul play. FOUL PLAY STJSPECTED Old Mr. Halliday was seen going to Pine Bush on Tuesday and on Wednes- bum. -Fred day was reported to have been In Mld- dletown with his wife, since which lima his whereabouts has been a mys- lery.

On Sunday night the party watched the premises all night long same manner as that ol the former victim except that was shot In the back In the region of the heart." The only clothing that she had on was a fine gauze undershirt. This, also, had been burned by tbe flash from the pistol and powder marks were plainly dlBoernable about the wounds, two of which passed through the heart, while the left lung was penetrated by 8ix bullet Pour of the bullets were extracted from the breast, having paswd nearly through the body. They were the same size a. those found on the older woman. The only other wound found upon the body was a bullet hole through the wrist.

This closed the autopsy. The jury had been prev- iouBly notified by the Coroner that an adjournment would be taken until this afternoon at Decker's Hotel. THE GREAT MYSTERY that surrounds the whole tragedy Is that none among all the hundreds that have been thronging the place during the day have Identified either the bodies. No one around the neighborhood can remember having ever seen them before. It seems Incredible that such a murder could have taken place without some one having previously seen the victims of it somewhere in the ueighborhood.

HOW THEY WEBB KILLED. That the victims were shot after they had disrobed for the night there seems to be but little doubt, as none of their clothing was stained with blood or marked in any way. Prom the course of the bullets both woman must have been In bed with nothing on save their undershirts, as both were burned by the flash of tbe powder, and they were found to conttln frag- menu of bone. All told of their tearoh for the old man; how they had rantaoked the old and dilapidated barn and hay mow, but no clue at to to hit whereaboutt could be found. Searching partlet were organized th li morning, and they have been out all day tcouring the Beldt for mllee around. YOUNG HOLIDAY'S STORY. THE GREATEST EXCITEMENT revailed throughout the whole neigb- )orhood. It took but a short time to pread the terrible AN INQUEST BEGUN. Coroner Joseph Roesch, of Wurtsboro, was notified, who, with Jdstlce Morrison, hastened to the scene quickly as possible, and they notified Dr. C.

W. Riper, of Wurtaboro, The time of the shooting wia evidently several days apart, as the evidence goes to show that the older one was murdered first. The weapons used have not been found, although it was understood that the old man had two revolvers of 32 calibre. The general Impression prevails that it was the Intention of the Halllday woman to cover up her fiendish work by setting fire to the old barn and have It appear that the victims perished In the fiimes and she no doubt would have carried eut her work but for being watched so closely. It Is supposed that the older woman was murdered oa Tuesday or Wednesday, and that the young woman met her death on Friday or Saturday night.

The bodies were laid on the floor to await the undertaker, who had been sent for at Bloomlngburg.
