Y. crew of an Air Force C-45 with one engine limping bailed out of the plane north of Utica last night, and just over an hour later an unidentified craft splashed into Lake Ontario near Oswego. Lt.

Col. Charles A. Callahan, 32, the pilot, of Montieello, was quoted as saying that when he and his four passengers parachuted to safety about 8:50 p. m. (EST), the twin-engine plane was headed northwest, under automatic controls.

None of the five was injured. Police at Oswego, 65 miles north- west of here, said they received at 10:02 p. m. (EST) first reports that a plane had crashed into the lake, about a mile off shore and three miles west of the city. An investigator for the Civil Aeronautics Authority said he believed the Lake Ontario plane was the C-45.

State police said they had been informed the C-45 had enough fuel to reach the lake. Griffiss Air Force base, near Rome, said the seven passenger craft was returning to that base from Bedford, near Boston, on a routine flight. They said all those aboard were attached to the Air Development Center at Grif- I fiss. Maj. Wilton Hodges, Air adjutant general at Griffiss, said the plane had apparently developed trouble in one engine, and could not maintain its altitude.

The airmen bailed out near Stittville, due east of Rome. The base identified the passengers as First Lt. Sam Sharff, 31 of New York City; Lt. Col. G.

S. Lambert of Newport News, Va William P. Bethke, a civilian technician who lives near Rome and Joseph M. Eannario, a civilian observer from Rome.
