PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 2001 CITY ALLEGHENY RIVER Boater acquitted in rape A Lawrenceville man was found cent yesterday of charges that he and other man raped and sexually assaulted a woman two years ago on a boat on Allegheny River, Downtown. James O'Neill, 57, had been charged with sexual assault, indecent assault two counts each of rape and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. The woman, then 25, told police O'Neill and William Graswick, 41, Sharpsburg, were on a boat that picked her up at Point State Park. While on boat, the three of them drank several beers and then, the woman said, men assaulted her. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette does identify victims of sexual assault.

Graswick pleaded no contest in cember to one count of indecent assault. Charges of sexual assault and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse withdrawn. He was sentenced to year of probation. O'Neill's defense attorney, Wendy Williams, said that her client has always claimed that the sexual contact was sensual. A jury deliberated for about two hours yesterday before it found O'Neill guilty of all charges.

Sixty percent said they believe the death penalty is not imposed enough, but 72 percent also said they would favor suspending executions until questions about its fairness are answered.
