Kress Store Opens Here Today The handsome new structure just completed and equipped at Fourteenth and Broadway at the Oakland, home of S. H- Kreu & Co.. ML FT. The store, wnich comprlsex fiur stories and basement, and which Is a class A structure, occupies a site which was leased under a 3S-.vear prround leasehold. It Is built according- to the design of the architectural de- "r P- -JJhJ-fc.-Ji-Co, today was expressly designed to suit the particular needs of this nation-wide concern. The entire bulldini? is exclusive ly occupied by S. II. Kress and Co. There are two selling; floors and three floors for stock rooms, office rooms, lunch and rest rooms ior me benefit of employees, lock ers, etc. Kor the opening, the firm has employed over 250 girls and 85 men. Following the opening event i ne organization Is to be of such dimensions as will he Justified by ine volume or business, it is stated. It is computed by G. C. Esker, pacific Coast representative of S H. Kress & Co.. that the Oakland store will, normally, employ an .erase of 150 girls and 20 men LARGE STOCK TXSTALLED. A large stock of merchandise has been received and installed. It Is stated by Esker that recent con ignments include a carload of eakea and cookies, two carloads of enamel-ware, two carloads of aluminum-ware, two carloads . of table crockery, two carloads of glass table-ware, and many other commodities and goods in less than carload lots. A unique feature of the store Is th hupe candy counter, which has a length of 76 feet. All the candy used for display on this counter is tinder glass cover. The candy used for display purposes is not for. sale. The candy which is sold to the customer is kept in a long row of hygienic containers, technically known as "silver-plated vendors." The candy counter consists of S6 section units and can be taken apart in SO minutes for cleaning purposes. - The counters are Tlghted by an up-to-date system of illumination, which throws the light directly over the commodities, but not over the 'customer or the sales girla The entire store Is Illuminated by a novel lighting system for which 8. H. Kress A Co. obtslned the professional advice of leading experts In New York and Philadelphia. Especial emphasis is placed upon the fact that the largest' portion ef the goods sold In this store are of California manufacture. All of the crockery, as well as the can dies, are purchased in California In this connection It is of Interest to note that & H. Kress & Co. tak 90 per cent of the output of one large western pottery concern, and that these goods not only supply the company a Pacific Coast stores but are also consigned to its stores as far east as Colorado and Texas, FOUNTAIN AND hVKCn. Another Important feature of the new store is the huge fountain and lunch counter with 75 seats for customers having a total length of 150 running feet. There is also the splendid hygienic kit chen, the up-to-date "washed air ventilation system" and many other features. The store also operates a free checking room which is at the disposal of cus tomers as well as visitors. Infor mation desks, etc. From the deco rative and artistic point of view special mention should be made of the magnificent marble rotunda placed at the head of the stairs to the basement. The store contains a total of 59 huge counters, displaying the wid est variety of merchandise. The building was constructed under the personal supervision - of E. R. Campbell and J. W. Mack. building superintendents of the S. H. Kress & Co. Much of the equipment In the store was designed and patented in the course of time by C W. Kress, the present president of the company. This equipment, it is pointed out. constitutes the sum total of experience gained in many years of merchandising. There are now nearly 200 stores In this nation-wide chain. JN THIS STATE -' Last June the Kress Company celebrated its thlrty-mnth anniver sary. The first Kress store was started In Nashville, Tenn.. and from this as a basis the organlza Hon crew until today, after being In business 39 years, the company is operating about 200 stores. The business was originally op erated as a Ten cent Store, selling nothing over 10 cents. In later years, because of the popular de mand, the price limit was increased to zs cents, a rew years ago. a representative of the company stated, the public began to show a tendency to the stores, for items of a higher price. As a result, the Kress Company added to each store, where space permitted, merchandise of a hlghef price. The result Is that today all stores, wherein space permits, the company is selling some merchandise in certain departments at a price in excess of z& cents.
