Hope show takes first in ratings ANGELES (AP) Bob Hope celebrating his birthday and tt weekly Nielsen ratings K-. of Hope's birthday was the No. i show for the week ending May 29. Ken Kantor, a spokesman for the comedian, said Hope, whose birthday was May 29, was elated with the show's success. NBC, which ended the regular television season in third place, also had cause to cheer.

It won the week and placed five shows in the Top 10. NBC has had a reason to be optimistic lately. The network won a week of the May sweeps and it placed second for the sweeps overall. The sweeps are special rating periods used to set local advertising rates. Other NBC shows in the Top 10 were "Hill Street Blues," "The A-Team the Eastwood movie "The Enforcer," and "Cheers." NBC had a rating of 14.8 in the A.C.

Nielsen Co. survey. CBS was second with 13.8 and ABC was third with 12.8. The networks say this means that in an average prime-time minute, 14.8 percent of the country's TV homes were tuned to NBC. CBS had four shows in the Top 10 and ABC had one.

NBC also had most of the the bottom-ranked shows, thanks to the Democratic telethon, "Celebrate America." Nielsen listed each half-hour as a separate show. The shows in descending order were "One Night Band" on CBS, "Celebrate America" at 9:30 p.m., "Big Binl in China," "Celebrate America" at 10 p.m. and "Celebrate.Ameri- ca" at 10:30 p.m. Here are the week's programs t.
