Retains Hickory Stick, Ml A A Lead NESC Stops Bearcats, 16-3 Bowling Results Northeast State College Saturday combined with the weather to retain possession of the Old Hickory Stick with a 163 football verdict over host Northwest State College. The loss and the heavy rain, which started an hour before game time and continued well into the fourth quarter, were a combination which served to dampen the spirits and limit numbers of a Homecoming day crowd at MSC. As a result, NESC maintained Ls grip on first place in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a loop record of 3-0 and MSC fell further behind as its loop Maryville Daily Forum Monday, Nov. 1,1971 record dropped to 2-2. Another result was the retention of the symbolic Hickory Stick for the fourth straight year by NESC.

The two teams have been vying for its possession since 1931. Attack Halted A disappointed but realistic Gladden Dye, coach of the MSC Bearcats, said following the game, took away our running game and the weather took away our Statistics support Dye. MSC, averaging 182 yards a game rushing and 195 yards a game passing in the first five tests, was limited to 67 yards in the mud and 77 yards through the rain-filled air. With the rain hampering the passing of Bearcat quarterbacks, MSC hit on only five of 24 tosses. NESC took advantage of the poor aerial show to mass their forces against the run, and the strategy paid huge dividends.

Jim Albin, star rusher, who carried into the game a number six ranking in national NCAA College Division statistics with 145 yards per game, was limited to only 13 yards. The sophomore from Independence, however, saw little action after the first quarter as a result of an injur) to his right hand, the effects of a injury which had plagued him all week. Big Plays On the other side of the coin, NESC made the big plays and their defensive line stopped the Bearcats cold. And as Coach Dye put got two super backs (Lenvil Elliott and Pete Robertson) and we get them Elliott, who gained 53 yards on 15 carries, broke the back in the second quarter with a 55-yard run off a screen pass to erase a 3-0 Bearcat lead. The 197-pound speedster grabbed the toss from quarterback Bob Gibson, broke two or more tackles at the line of scrimmage and outlegged would-be pursuers to the goal line on what Dye called a John Scripsick booted the point.

But it was the bread and butter ground gaining of the 214-pound Robertson that helped the Bulldogs control the MSC Thinclads Claim Sixth Win Kansas City sophomore Dennis Clifford was third in 25:37. St. Joseph sophomore Bill Hindery was seventh in 26:38. Northwest State cross country team tuned up for this Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association meet by topping Tarkio College and Central Missouri State College here Saturday. The Bearcats downed the Owls, 21-37, and dropped the Mules, 15-50, to bring their dual meet mark to 6-2.

MSC runners grabbed four of the first seven places. Wixom, junior Ron Beegle scored his first win since the opener against Peru State as he covered the five- mile course in 24:34. Independence sophomore Duane Kimble was second in 25:28 and Other Bearcat finishers, their places and times were: Randy Baker, eighth, Alan Klein, ninth, Mark Davis, 11th, Bruce Becker, 14th, Wes Ruggles, 16th, 27:48, and Bobby Olson, 19th, 28:37. Beegle, Kimble, Clifford, Hindery, Baker, Klein and Davis are expected to compete for Dr. Earl Baker in the MIAA meet on the Pertle Springs goU course at Warrensburg.

The Bearcats finished third in last meet. ball during precious minutes of the game. The transfer from Wichita State University in 1970 bulled for 64 yards on 17 carries and time and time again picked up valuable first down yardage in clutch situations. Early Lead MSC had taken the lead of 3-0 in the first quarter when Jim Maddick, North Kansas City, booted a 21-yard field goal with 5:25 left in the period. The Bearcats, aided by a roughing the kicker penalty, had marched 59 yards in 12 plays to the NESC three-yard line where they stalled with a fourth down and two yards to go situation.

Coach Russ defending co-champions of the MIAA salted the game away in a span of 33 seconds at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth period when they capitalized on two Bearcat mistakes. Steve Franklin, a defensive end, set up the first opportunity when he ripped the ball from MSC tailback Greg Wright on the Bearcat 12-yard line. Franklin moved to the six on the theft before being downed on what had started as a Bearcat rushing play. Field Goal Four plays later NESC made it a 16-3 game when Scripsick booted a 21-yard field goal through the downpour. On first play from scrimmage following the NESC kickoff, Craig intercepted a Bearcat pass on the MSC 48 and returned it 14 yards.

On the next play, quarterback Bob Gibson found slot back Larry Jones with a Blanda Rallies Raiders To Tie Chiefs, 20-20 By Associated Press The Oakland Raiders again are letting George do it and 44-year-old George Blanda, the oldest player in pro football, is not letting them down, but keeping them up. Blanda, who replaced starter Daryle Lamonica the last two times Oakland had the ball, fired a 24-yard touchdown pass to Fred Biletnikoff, then kicked an eight-yard field goal with 2V2 minutes left.
