a "Eastern Oklahoma's Greatest Weekly TOTAL PAPER CHECOTAE, OKLAHOMA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER Volume 39, Number Intosh County Democrat COUNTY CAGE LOOP FORMED BY 5 SCHOOLS Season Gets Underway On December 6th Organization of a McIntosh county baseball league composed of teams from Hanna, Onapa, Hitchita, Pierce and Stidham was completed at a mecting at the court house in Eufaula November 9, according to J. C. Poindetxer, secretary. Newly elected officers of the county conference include: W. E.

Draper of Pierce, re-elected presi-dent; Orace Rumsey, and Poindexter, secretary. The teams in the conference will play a double round robin of games during the season, starting on Friday, December 6. Each school in the league will pay $5.00 membership fee to the secretary, with the money to be used for buying trophies for the winning teams. New rules and regulations voted by the conference are AS follows: Each school to send list of players to opposing school one week before game is played; all referees to be approved by conference officials; all players on 'A' teams cannot be substituted down to the 'B' team; all 'B' boys not be eligible to play on 'A' teams; junior high teams to abide by same rules; all games to start at 6:00 o'clock when junior high teams play curtain ralser. The schedule follows: December 6 -Onapa at Hanna; Pierce at Stid: bam; Hitchita, bye.

Brown's Rites Held Wednesday Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Mayme Brown, 49, who died at her home in Harvey, Ill last Saturday after a long illness. Mrs. Brown, who moved to Checotah with her family at an early was born at Bean's Creek, age, Tenn. Services were conducted by Rev.

J. C. Hendrick and burial was in Greenlawn cemetery under direction of the Powers Funeral home. Survivors include: one son, Neilson of Harvey: four brothers, Turner Henshaw, Muskogee; Pleas and Joe Henshaw, Checotah and Ellis sisters, Mrs. W.

of Harvey; three A. Clark and Mrs. Virgie Steen of Checotah: and Mrs. Ruby Frieburn of Harvey. Legion Conducts Weekly Dances The Checotah post of the AmeriLegion is sponsoring a series can of dances each Saturday night at the local hall.

Clyde Phillips and his Roundup Riders are furnishing both popular and hoedown music for the affairs. Further information may be obtained by contacting the recruiting officer at the Checotali post office on Friday mornings. -0 Connors Aggiettes Play Dallas Quintet The Connors Aggie tes, faststepping collegiate basketball team, will play the Nu-Grape girls team of Dallas in a doubleheader at War-1 ner Saturday at 2:00 and 8:00 p. m. Last Saturday the Connors girls defeated the Dallas Reserve Loan Life Insurance team 31 to 16 and trounced the same team 28 to 9 Sunday afternoon.

The team, which is coached by Tom Johnson, will go to Atlanta in early December for two games with Cook's Gold Blumes, national girls champs for the past two years. 0 Odd Fellows Plan Big Turkey Dinner Turkey dinner will be served to members of the Odd Fellows and Rebecca lodges at a joint meeting at the hall Friday night. An election of officers for the new term will be held next night. All members are invited to attend and participate in the balloting. At the meeting Tuesday night the first degree was conferred on one candidate.

3.638 Bales Cotton Ginned In County A total of 3,638 bales of cotton were ginned in McIntosh county prior to November 1 compared to 3,203 at the same date a vear ago, according to the government report. issued this week. TIE Team Closes Fine Season Under Coach Gardner The Checotah Wildents ended the 1946 football season in a blaze of glory at the local park last Friday night when they defeated a tough Eufaula team 25 to 7 on a muddy field. Eddy scored early in the first quarter on an end around play and Johnny Shepherd dived across from tha six yard line in the second period. John King went the distance in the third period when the intercepted a Eufaula pass and galloped 63 yards for a touchdown. The Ironheads scored in the final period on a 10 yard pass from Drew to Dahlgren.

Johnny Shepherd accounted for Cheetah's final score, when he hroke loose for a 50 yard gain and. then powered over from the six yard line. Checotah, Wagoner and Tahlequah ended the conference season fin a three- way tie with each team having won seven games and lost one in the loop. At a meeting of conference officials in Muskogee Saturday a drawing was held to determine the winner of the conference title. Tahlequah, the team which was defeated 14 to 7 by Checotah two weeks ago won.

They will go into the state championship playoffs against Poteau this week. The conference vote ito name each of the three teams as cochampions. The Wildcats, Coached by Guy Gardner and assisted by Lou Sharpe, former 0. U. star and Vance McGilbry, former Haskell Indians player, have enjoyed the most successful season in a decade.

Seven members of this years aggregation are seniors and will be lost to the team next year. Checotah was defeated only once this season, when they dropped an 18 to 0. tilt to the Wagoner Bulldogs. Amateur Plumbers Banned By Mayor The city will strictly enforce all plumbing ordinances and all people who are operating without a license will be arrested and this fined, week. Mayor Henry Wells warned The ordinances require all per sons doing plumbing work in the city limits to obtain a permit from the city for every job that is started.

Those guilty of violating any part of the ordinance will be arrested and fined the mayor declared. The program is a joint project of the state medical association and the various county medical societies of the state, working in cooperation with the Oklahoma division of the American Cancer So ciety. Medical specialists and nurses will donate their time in order to make the facilities of the mobile cancer detection clinic available to everyone. There is no clinic charge. Those interesting in supplying cakes and pies are asked to call Mrs. Menser at 349. 0 Foreign War Vets Call Special Meet 0 QUEEN AND ATTENDANTS HONOR FOOTBALL TEAM A special meeting of the James E. White post of the Veterans of Foreign War will be held at the American Legion hall at 7:30 o'clock next Wednesday night, according to Edson Perry, commander. All members are urged to attend the meeting.

Overseas veterans are given a special invitation. A party honoring members of the football team was given at the Methodist Fellowship ball last Friday night by the football queen and attendants. Mrs. Jack Haggard and Mrs. Grace Swadley were chaperones.

Joe Roy Williams, 29, popular Checotah farmer and trucker, died the Baptist hospital early Sunmorning of wounds suffered a pistol fight with Carl Brady, Eufaula nightwatchman, last Saturdy night. Exact details of the events leadup to the shooting have not been divulged. Sheriff John McQuillen said that Williams and Bob Burton of Eufaula were taken into custody by Brady at the 69 Tavern on the west side of north Main Street in that city. In walking toward the city hall Burton is said to have knockthe policeman down, directly in front of the 73 Tavern on the opposite side of the street, causing the officer to lose his pistol from the holster. Williams is said to have picked up the gun, whereupon Brady drew another pistol and the men fired on each other.

Williams was hit several times in the chest and stomach. After receiving emergeney treatment he was taken to a Muskogee hospital where he died several hours later. Brady was also taken to the same hospital suffering a gunshot wound the shoulder and bruises about the face. He is said to be out of danger. Burton is being held for further investigation.

Funeral services for Williams were held at Onapa High school at o'clock Tuesday afternoon. A estimated at 1500 people came to pay last respects. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in the county. A display of flowers from hundreds of friends and admirers, was said to have been one of the largest in eastern Oklahoma. Williams, who lived at Onapa for the past year, after returning from New Mexico was a member of the Baptist church.

After his Onapa marriage to Miss Roberta Turner of Fame, he was a prominent farmChecotah, and later deer around voted all of his time to trucking.
