CohoctoD, Sept 3, Fall is here. A bad week for the fair. Re-v. if. Swan has returned from his vacation and there were services at the Presbyterian church to-day Mr, and Mrs.

Snerman Bassler of Fran Itath Adrocite: The Republican convention last Saturday to nominate a.schox)l coratniasioner for the drat district wag held at the Court House. At the beginning of the campaign there were twelve candidates that desired the nomination but last Saturday only six showed up for the final struggle. They were Charles M. Jarvis of Thomas'W. Kobin- son of Bath, D.

F. JJiller of PrattsDurg, Addison C. Wood of Loring II. Bannnn of Cohocton and Minor Foster of Wheeler. The eighteenth ballot resulted iu the choice of Foster as he received 31 ballots, Kobinson 14, Barn urn 5.

We have not the pleasure of Mr. Foster's acquaintance but from what we can learn should judge that it was unfortunate for the educational interests of the district that he was chosen. Schools should not be taken into polities and when an unfit nomination is made the nominee should be defeated. Wo are told that he is the least competent ot those who strove for the nomination. We hope that the Way land were the guests of their par- teachers cf the district will show that George Cooley a i ents, Mr.

The event had been hourly anticipated for some time. The roijorts in the Tribune from time to time had prepared hie many friends in the coin- munity'for the inevitable for several days past, as it was well known that his life was hanging by a thread. He has been wearing out for years. Of a highly nervous organization, burdened with heavy responsibiliites which his conscientious make -up would not allow him to slight in any way, he practically laid down his life upon the altar of duty. He met fajthfully every obligation to his employers with energy, tac-i and digestion.

His courtesy and spirit of accommodation with the patrons of the road kept them in the most cordial relations with that great corporation, and added to its popularity with the business community. His invariable cordiality and good sound common sense an 1 energy fitted him well for his important duties. Daniel K. Belknap was born in Bethany, Wavne March 17, 1828, and was consequently past 68 years of age lie was the son of Horace Belknap who died in Tioga in 1813.
