NEWKIRK HERALD JOURNAL THURSDAY AUGUST 15 1940 LYERS BEAT HARVESTERS ON LATE RALLY our Runs in Seventh Spell Defeat for Team By 14 15 Score A hard line drive by Gordon Collins shortstop gave Collins' lyers their fourth run In the seventh Inning and a 15 to 14 victory over Harvesters In a Newkirk soft bay league game Tuesday night The lyers trailing by three runs at the opening of the final stanza started the 'winning rally after two men were out but three costly errors assisted them A total of 10 runs were scored In the seventh six by the Harvesters who batted first It was one of the best games played by league teams this season Collins' crew scored three runs in the second frame one in the third six in the fourth one in the sixth and four In the seventh squad tallied three runs in the second three in the third two in the fifth and six in the seventh ive hits and one error were re sponsible for the rally In the last stanza when the entire team batted around and Rev inley Reid pitcher took two turns at the plate Rev Reid got on base with a single and Leavitt followed with a line drive With one man out Roy Welch first base stepped up to the plate to smack a homer with Rev Reid and Leavitt on second and third Three more runs went across the plate before the side was retired Then the lyers took their turn at bat Greenhagen led off with a hit but was out when he failed to get back to first after Whitehair lined out to Law Harvester right field McWhorter center field got a hit and Johnson right field and Caln roving short got on base on errors George Miller third sacker walked and Tappan took first after Hamlin Harvester center field bobbled a high fly Collins stepped up with the drive that probably would have gone for a homer if the winning run had hot crossed the plate Lloyd Casement new highschool football coach proved just another softball player to Har vesters riday night Playing his first softball fray here Casement took the mound for Dean 'i Bombers who lost by l(k to 9 score The new coach showed plenty of speed in six Innings in the box but his fast deliveries were pounced upon by the Harvesters for a total of 14 hits Rev inley Reid Harvester hurler gave up a total of 10 scattered hits and received credit for bls fourth win this season junior baseball team man aged by Charles Shideler returned home Sunday evening with a ll to 4 win over the Garst Brothers squad of Wichita The game played on the Wichita East highschool diamond Sunday aft ernoon was the second win by the juniors in two showings with the Garst Brothers this season Earlier the lo cal team downed Wichita on the New kirk diamond 11 to 4 Local juniors lost a headtbreaking baseball fray to Ponca City intermedi ate Sunday afternoon on the local diamond The Ponca City team won the game second of a series of three contests 7 to 4 Errors were costly for the locals who bobbled five times in the field while the visitors made only two ANNOUNCE NEW ARMY QUOTAS Tonca City Recruiting Officer lists Several Vacancies New army quotas and their locations have been announced by Sergeant Troy Caldwell recruiting officer In Ponca City Three of the quotas which must be filled by Thursday are In the cavalry at Bliss in El Paso Texas the infantry at Sam Houston in San Antonio and the quartermaster corps at Reno In El Reno A few vacancies are occurring In Sill including the quartermaster corps the medical department the air corps and the ordnance department Those enlisting In the air corps or the ordnance department must have at least a highschool education There are also vacancies in the coast artillery at Crockett In Galveston Texas AWARDED DECREE Tom Constant Ponca City was awarded a divorce decree in district court here Tuesday from his wife Georgia Constant on a charge of ex treme cruelty The couple was mar ried in Kay county last August 29 Australia is known as the Land of the Southen Cross Rain ails To Lift City Lake Level Cronan Says City Water Has Always Tested Safe The Newkirk lake site and drain age basin where rainfall seemed most desirous agnln failed to secure any noticeable amount of moisture Thurs day Water departmehfworkers who vis ited thf lake site today reported the lake level remained at about the same height as it stood before the rain Last Monday afternoon when the city received a generous 218 lnch downpour the lake got only enough to settle the dust The lake has missed or shared light ly In moisture receipts which fell in the city during the past several weeks and the lake level has been drawn low by heavy use of water this sum mer by city customers Although the lake has gone low the water which local residents drink and use has been kept quite pure according to Cronan commission er of public utilities Three samples of water have been taken each week from faucets In va rious homes and sent to the state laboratory at Oklahoma City for analysis Each sample during the entire summer and even beyond that time has been found "suitable for drinking Cronan said The series of analysis "have always been good although the taste of the water has not always been the commissioner stated Use of chemicals in the water has caused it to taste at times Cronan explained A charcoal treatment for the water has caused the water to appear brown 1n color In the bottom of a bathtub Harmless particles of rust have ap peared in the water
