D-5 ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT PITTSBURGH I'OST-GAZETTE MONDAY, OCTOBER 14,2002 WWW Counting Crows rock new Petersen center Guitarist finds rhythm in his many grooves CONCERT REVIEW Charlie HunterDean BowmanCorey Harris WHERE: Rosebud, Strip District. WHEN: 8 tonight. TICKETS: redemption and understanding. Not every song caught fire. Duritz ignored the original melody and rhythm of "Mr.

Jones," sending the song meandering. The Crows visibly brightened playing the new single, "American Girls, but the tune sounded musically thin compared with the version on "Hard Candy" There were far more pleasures than miscues, though. "Good Time" made for a smoldering opening song, while the band turned "'Round Here" into a hypnotic tone poem as their first encore. "If I Could Give All My Love" was pure melodic bliss, while the inspired pairing of "Holiday in Spain'' and "Miami" rendered both songs more moving and elegant. Counting Crows may be past its commercial peak, but the band's performance spoke to its deepening and continued musical relevance.

John Young is a freelance music reviewer. By John Young Are the band members self-consciously arty? At times. Do they swim in a lyrical sea of romantic angst? Almost always. Can they come off as pretentious? Sure. But more importantly, as they prayed the first-ever concert at the Petersen Events Center last night, the members of Counting Crows sounded like one of the finest rock bands working, bar none.

While they don't have the chops of jazz players, the Crows have adopted the ethos of that genre. In particular, singer Adam Duritz regularly tampered with lyrics, melodies, rhythms and dynamics within songs, finding inspiration in improvisation. The experiments didn't always work, but they made for an unpredictable, at times explosive, show. And it all sounded exceptional. While it seemed to take years before sound engineers mastered 'Red Dragon' waids off new movies mixing in the A.J.

Palumbo Center, the Crows' crew blasted a full sonic spectrum throughout Pitt's new basketball arena Two songs from the band's 1996 album "Recovering the Satellites" benefited most from their live treatments. Duritz launched "Goodnight Elisabeth," already a heartbreaking ballad, into the melancholic stratosphere with an improvised vocal section about his "September songs" and "September girls." The short, rocking "Catapult" was the closest the band came to having a song fall apart, but somehow the tune's fury just kept building on layers of off-kilter beats and distorted guitars. The chaotic coda served the song well, emphasizing the lyrical pleading for lovers, was the strongest of six new wide releases, debuting at No. 3 with $11.1 million. Adam Sandler and Emily Watson's "Punch-Drunk Love," a bizarre romance between misfits, had a great opening in limited release taking in $380,000 at five theaters in New York City, Los Angeles and Toronto.

By comparison, Madonna's new romance "Swept Away" bombed with $375,000 at 196 theaters. IS CITY South Fayette 14 Brldgeville Exit (54) Oft I-79 St" 412-221-6189 TeleTicket: 412-444-ITLM 657 THE TMNSTORTEII Pfi-1 1:45, 1:45 .1:15,5:45, 7:15, 7:45. US. MS 1:50,151. 5:50.

jr EL Charlie Hunter brings his eight-string guitar to town tonight. the release of "Bing, Bing, Bing!" and Shango." In 1994, he recorded "Natty Dread" and followed that with "Return of the Candyman." In 1999, he released the unconventional but critically received "Duo." The recording challenged listeners to look beyond the comfortable surface and to feel the groove-laden world of music he evokes. And that is what he expects to do at Rosebud tonight "I'm very dedicated to this music and evolving my sound "I'm trying to create my own vocabulary. I want to create a distinct sound. And at the end of the evening, that's what people are interested in hearing." Nate Guidry can be reached at nguidryta or 412-263-3865.

I 4lii kept expanding the instrument" Hunter grew up in Berkeley, and started playing guitar at 10. He was originally drawn to the music of Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy. Then he heard a recording by Charlie Christian and Joe Pass. "I was really into what Pass was doing," Hunter said. "He was doing a lot of stuff with the bass and a lot of counterpoint with the guitar." By the time he got to high school he was starting to make a name for himself.

He performed in reggae and blues bands and formed the Grease Monkeys, a rock and funk band that performed in the Bay area. In 1992, he toured as a member of the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy during U2's "Zoo TV" tour. A year later, he made his debut recording, "Charlie Hunter Trio," and was invited to participate in the Lollapalooza alt-rock tour. He followed that with a Blue Note recording contract and 6 Monday, October 14 41 2-482-41 1 If Regtnt Squirt, IOj5 S. Braddock Ave last Kisi fUMYl Mon-Thor- 8:00 The Harris Thtaicr.

But those descriptions only begin to describe the eight-string guitarist, who performs solo or mostly solo tonight at Rosebud. The evening will open with vocalist Corey Harris, followed by vocalist Dean Bowman. Hunter said he and Bowman might collaborate on a few songs. But he, in large part, will focus on his groove, which one moment might pay homage to Al Green, the next the music of Charles Mingus. It's a tricky dichotomy for most, but for Hunter it reflects his taste for both extremes.

"I was exposed to all kinds of music growing up in California," said Hunter, who has just completed a recording that will be released in March. "I listened to everyone from the Dead Kennedys and FUnkadelics to Charlie Parker. So a lot of what I do has been informed by that" At the heart of what he does is a groove a hard-swinging, accessible groove. "IVe always been interested in the rhythmic stuff," he said. "I want my music to communicate with the audience." To sustain that groove, some years ago Hunter had Ralph Novak design an eight-string guitar, with extra A and strings.
