He wanted'lb delay the trial so that he could review the information and plan a defense lor it will be selected before the trial begins in March. Defense attorney Patrick Thomassey, who represents Richards, Assistant District Attorney Thomas Merrick, and Manning all pointed to the holiday season, in addition to pretrial publicity, as being a distraction and a reason jurors did not want to serve at this time. "Perhaps we are impinging on the citizens who are called to serve on this jury, perhaps significantly and unfairly," Manning said during a hearing yesterday at which the postponement was ordered. "Apparently, the number of frontpage newspaper stories commemorating the anniversary of this case has tainted the jury," he said.

He added, however, that the news stories should have less of an effect when the trial begins in March. "The publicity certainly is under Maurice Barlow has since recovered from the wound to his abdomen. Sidney Barlow was shot in the chest and killed. Jury selection began Monday with a pool of 105 potential jurors, said Margaret Cangelier, the court's voir dire clerk. Of those, 64 said they were aware of the case because of news reports, and 34 were dismissed after they said they could not be impartial or because they had personal hardships that preclude them serving on the jury.

Yesterday, 21 of the remaining 71 jurors were dispatched to be considered for a jury in another trial. With 50 potential jurors remaining for the Richards trial, 33 were interviewed yesterday and 22 of those were dismissed after they cited personal and financial hardships. that Michael Richards and his brother, Robert Wright, would have separate trials. He said yesterday he might reconsider that decision, then scheduled both men's trials to begin the same day, pending any further motions or rulings on that matter. Richards, 26, of Garfield, and Wright, 23, of the North Side, are charged with the slaying of Sidney Barlow, 35, of Garfield.

Barlow had just finished playing in the neighborhood Turkey Bowl football game and was leaving the field behind Fort Pitt Elementary School in Garfield when he was shot. Eyewitnesses said Barlow had tried to quiet the swearing of Wright, Richards and a third man when Richards shot Barlow's brother, Maurice Barlow, 44, of AUentown, Lehigh County.
