P'8 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2001 LOCAL NEWS Kitt said her boss, Ronald Roe-faro, director of the IU's Education and Technology Center, made sexually oriented comments to her. Roe-faro has denied wrongdoing. Sam Clapper, an attorney for the intermediate unit, said Monday he didn't know if the school organization would appeal to the state Supreme Court. CLEARFIELD COUNTY candidacy for Common Pleas judge. Todd, 45, of Mt.

Lebanon, ran for judge in the 1999 primary, winning the Republican nomination but losing in the general election. Todd is a graduate of Penn State University and Duquesne University School of Law. He maintains a law practice Downtown and is former managing partner of DeMay, DeMay, Donnelly Todd. Todd is seeking both the Democratic and Republican nominations in the May 15 primary. from cluttering residential neighborhoods.

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued to overturn similar ordinances elsewhere and threatened to intervene. Gleason instead argued alone at a council meeting last month that the ordinance violates freedom of speech rights unless it is redrawn to exclude political signs. Council agreed Monday, and sent the ordinance to its solicitor to be fine-tuned. BLAIR COUNTY Harassment suit revived State Superior Court has reinstated a sexual harassment lawsuit against the Blair County Intermediate Unit filed by a secretary who says her boss discriminated against her. Blair County Judge Hiram Carpenter dismissed the lawsuit in December 1999, saying it was not the court's business to legislate "boorish behavior or to micromanage occasional sexual innuendo or bad manners between sexes simply because it occurs at the workplace." But Superior Court said the facts alleged by Linda Sue Kitt of Holli-daysburg, if true, do constitute a "hostile work environment," which is illegal.

ALLEGHENY COUNTY PROTHONOTARY McDonald not to run City Councilwoman Valerie McDonald said yesterday that she will drop her bid to become Allegheny County prothonotary. State Sen. Leonard Bodack, D-Lawrenceville, the county's Democratic Party chairman, urged Gov. Tom Ridge to name McDonald to fill the unexpired term of Michael Coyne, who died in October. McDonald would have been the first African American to occupy that row office job, which supervises court records.

McDonald said she would rather serve "in a policy-making position rather than a managerial one." Ridge has until the end of the month to nominate a replacement for Coyne. The choice must be ratified by a two-thirds vote of the state Senate. Acting prothonotary Michael Lamb, Coyne's deputy, announced last week that he will run for the job. COMMON PLEAS COURT Todd seeks judgeship Randy Todd has announced his It was the second time in less than a month that state vehicles have been vandalized. On Dec.

18, nine PennDOT trucks were punctured at the New Stanton shed. Damage and environmental cleanup in that incident also cost about $30,000. Police have made no arrest in either case and aren't saying if they are related. PennDOT spokesman Jim Keys said the patched-up trucks should be back on the road today. Windshields have been replaced and there are temporary patches on the tanks.

Keys said it will be another month before new fuel tanks arrive. Anyone with information about the incidents should call state police at 724-727-3434. CAMBRIA COUNTY Ban on signs dropped Council in the Johnstown suburb of Westmont will change an ordinance so residents can have multiple campaign signs in their yard. Rob Gleason, a borough resident and Cambria County Republican Committee chairman, was threatened with a citation when he had four signs in his yard in November. The borough has an ordinance limiting signs to one per yard, an attempt to prevent commercial signs and encouraged patrons to touch them at a backroom party.

The club's attorneys say Liquor Control Enforcement officers don't have the power to cite the club. Blair County Judge Norman Callan has scheduled a hearing Feb. 15. Callan can opt to hear new testimony, decide the case again based on testimony given before the administrative law judge who issued the fines last year, or reject the appeal without a hearing. WESTMORELAND COUNTY Vandals strike again PennDOT mechanics in Westmoreland County were busy again yesterday.

Of course, so were vandals. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation mechanics had to repair more than $15,000 worth of puncture damage done to seven PennDOT vehicles while they were parked overnight in a state shed in New Alexandria, off Route 22. Sometime early yesterday, vandals used a sharp object to smash windshields and puncture holes in the diesel and hydraulic tanks, police said. Investigating state police from Kiski Valley said it will cost an additional $15,000 to clean up the fuel spills. OBITUARIES Man gets new trial A Du Bois man convicted 14 months ago of killing his live-in girlfriend's 18-year-old son will get a new trial, a state Superior Court panel has ruled.

Ronald G. Hamilton is serving a life term in state prison for killing Brent Krieg as Hamilton and the boy's mother argued the day after Christmas in 1998. Hamilton put a gun to the boy's head and pulled the trigger twice, until the gun fired. The three-judge panel sent the case back to trial, saying the Clearfield County jury that convicted Hamilton was never properly instructed on one of Hamilton's defenses that he thought the handgun was not loaded. District Attorney Paul Cherry was not available to comment on whether an appeal may be filed.
