COLLEGE FOOTBALL RESULTS TOP 25 ROUNDUP COLLEGE FOOTBALL Alabama Hogtied in upset scores TD at 1:45 for 17-16 win rl By The Associated Press TUSCALOOSA, Ala. It seemed like an instant replay of 1995 for Arkansas. The Razorbacks can only hope the rest of the season plays out just as well. Clint Stoerner hit wide-open Anthony Eubanks for a 29-yard touchdown with 1:45 left yesterday, giving Arkansas a 17-16 upset over No. 11 Alabama.

It was the second straight one-point win in Tuscaloosa for Arkansas (2-1, 1-0 SEC), which built on a 20-19 victory at Bryant-Denny Stadium two years ago to capture its onlv SEC West title. The Razorbacks became the first team to beat Alabama (2-1, 1-1) two straight times in Tuscaloosa since Texas Christian in 1955-56. "We came down here and played a tough, tough football game against a very good team and we should be proud," Ford said. With Arkansas trailing by six with 3:34 left, Stoerner led a 58-yard scoring drive, one yard more than the last-minute drive the Razor-backs used to pull out victory in 1995. The loss kept Mike DuBose from joining Frank Thomas and Ray Perkins as the third coach to begin his career with the Crimson Tide at 3-0 since the 1930s.

More important, it made Ala Elaine ThompsonAssociated Press Quarterback Scott Frost celebrates after Nebraska takes a 21-0 lead against Washington. IfMl LJUVJ Nebraska QB outplays perceptions, No. 2 Washington, 27-14 Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said he never understood why it took so long. "For some reason he's undergone quite a battering for the last year and a half," Osbome said. "I think it was because we had won 26 straight games, and he happened to be the quarterback when we lost one." Tnat one was to Arizona State early last season that all but prevented Nebraska from going for a third stght national title "It's been disturbing for me as a coach for him to be treated the way he has, when all he's been doing is the best he can." There may be still another loss to deal with, but yesterday wasn't that day.

Frost, a senior, ran 18 times for 97 yards and passed for 88 while hitting 8 of 15. He gave Nebraska a 7-0 lead with a 34-yard run on an option keeper on a first-down play at 7:28 of the first quarter. He scored again on a third-and-6 play from the shotgun with 1:51 left in the opening period. The nifty run came after he avoided being sacked. The Huskers made it 21-0 at 7:20 of the second quarter on a 4-yard run by Ahman Green on a 55-yard drive that included pass completions of 21 and 14 yards by Frost.

By that time, Washington sophomore quarterback Brock Huard had been knocked out with a sprained ankle. Any comebacks were left to freshman Marques Tuiasosopo. While he did some good things 12 of 22 for 270 yards and two TDs he was not Huard. Nor, on this afternoon, Frost. "Some people are going to have to eat their words 'about our offense, especially some of our fans who booed 'em last week," said defensive end Grant Wistrom.

"A lot of people were calling for his head, and if there's a player of the game, it's got to be Scott." Indeed, Nebraska handed the Huskies their first loss at Husky Stadium since 1995 and only their sixth in their last 46 home games. And, the Cornhuskers kept this year's title hopes alive thanks to Frost. By Bill Campbell The Dallas Morning News SEATTLE Should he run or should he pitch? You could see the indecision in Scott Frost's eyes. It was his last option play of the day, but it came several minutes after Nebraska's 27-14 whipping of second-ranked Washington. After the game that many believed would seal Frost's fate as one of the most scorned quarterbacks to wear Cornhuskers red-and-white, Frost was proudly jogging off the field to join the celebration in the victorious locker room when a sea of Nebraska fans in the north end zone caught his eye.

What should he do? He'd made similar decisions all afternoon, choices that helped the seventh-ranked Cornhuskers, playing as an underdog for the first time in four seasons, amass 472 yards of total offense. He navigated an option that recorded 384 yards rushing against what previously had been the nation's No. 1-rated run defense. He personally ran right by the Huskies' defense for touchdowns of 34 and 30 yards as his team built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Who could blame him now if he chose the clear path to the locker room, instead of cutting through the long line of reporters and security guards, just to entertain a group whose approval he never had really met before yesterday? After all, it was the Nebraska fans who have booed Frost from the beginning of his year plus three games as the Cornhuskers' starting quarterback.

Most likely because he wasn't Tommie Frazier. But as he had so many times yesterday, Frost made the right call. He cut through the row of TV cameras and security personnel and ran to the fans, pumping his fist in the air and pitching his wrist bands into the stands as their cheers elevated. Finally, after all the heartache and animosity, the Cornhuskers have embraced their new quarterback. SATURDAY'S SCORES District Bethany 45 Greensboro 13 BuKak) St.

A LOOKING AHEAD West Virginia (2-1) at Miami (1-2): 3:30 p.m., Saturday. West Virginia comes off an open date Miami, loser of two straight, hasn't lost three in a row since 1984, the first year of a young, brash coach with perfect hair by the name of Jimmy Johnson. THE HEADLINES Legend status next? Iowa Coach Hayden Fry (225-165-10) joined Amos Alonzo Stagg, Pop Warner, Bear Bryant and Jess Neely as the only coaches to coach 400 games at the Div. I-A level yesterday. "It means I've been a survivor," says Fry.

I NEWS NOTES' Only four better: Kent State's Astron Whatley rushed 42 times for 373 yards the fifth highest total in Division l-A history to power Kent to a 4 1 -38 victory over Eastern Michigan. Blowout City: Remember SW Louisiana, the team that opened its season over at Pitt Stadium just a few weeks ago. Those same Cajuns were buried by Texas 66-0, as Branndon Stewart passed for two scores and ran for two. Finally, a win: Sims Lenhardt kicked a 27-yard field goal with 54 seconds left to help Duke end its 15-game losing streak with a 20-1 7 win over Army. Showdown: Florida TB Kenny Williams rushed for 208 yards and scored a TD to lead the Rattlers to a 30-14 win over Jackson State.

Jackson State (3-1) entered the game ranked No. 1. in the Sheridan Black College poll while Florida (3-0) was ranked No. 2. THE DISTRICT Local report: Mike Mc-Mahon, a Rutgers freshman from North Allegheny, was 3 of 6 passing for 70 yards, a TD and one INT in a loss to Boston College.

Charlie Batch was 25 for 42 for 320 yards in Eastern Michigan's loss to Kent State. TJl NUMBERS Tim Rattay, Louisiana Tech, completed 31 of 42 for 510 yards and six TDs in Louisiana Tech's 56-28 victory over Central Michigan. Tim Couch, Kentucky, completed 24 of 32 for 394 yards and seven TDs vs. Indiana. Tommy Chung, Dickinson, ran for 248 yards and three TDs in a 21 -1 4 win over Muhlenberg.

Peter Warrick, Florida State, caught eight passes for 249 yards vs. Clemson. Darren Rowell, Montana, was 34 of 46 for 368 yards and two TDs in a 35-1 4 win over St. Mary's of California. Montana is No.

1 in l-AA. Dave Loya, Duquesne, had one of the best passing days in the country with 373 yards and three TDs in a 38-14 win over Siena. Todd Bandhauer, Iowa State, was 26 for 51 for 375 yards and three TDs in a loss to Iowa. Matt Wichlinskl, Susquehanna, rushed for 206 yards in a 47-14 win over Wilkes. FOR THE RECORD 1 Passing Babe: Tim Couch's seven TD passes for Kentucky against Indiana shattered the old school record five by Babe Parilli in 1950 against both Cincinnati and North Dakota.

For real: Ohio University is 3-0 following its largest margin of victory in 44 years a 50-0 win over Buffalo. The Bobcats haven't beaten an opponent so bad since defeating Western Michigan, 67-15, in 1953. Odds and ends: Cincinnati held previously unbeaten Kansas (3-1) to mi-nus-46 yards rushing in a 34- 7 win San Diego State, a 36-10 loser to Wisconsin, hasn't won a non-conference game on the road since 1 981 Georgia's 3- 0 start is its first since 1988, Vince Dooley's last season. Morehead State piled up 727 yards of total offense in a 56-24 romp over Valparaiso. FOURTH-AND-SHORT It's gotta get better: Yesterday, Log made note of Jack Siedlecki's debut as head coach at Yale, replacing longtime coach Carm Cozza.

And Log also mentioned that the Elis were starting a freshman QB in Mike McClellan for the first time since 1905. After all the anticipation, both would probably just as soon forget Day 1 of what they hope will be long careers. Final score: Brown 52, Yale 14. McClellan threw four of Yale's six Auburn pulls one out at LSU bama realize that its greatest fears about a struggling offense appear to be true. "We need to take a real hard look at the reasons for this loss.

If we don't, we'll be back in this same position real soon," Dubose said. For the second straight week, the Crimson Tide looked lost and confused on offense. No Alabama running back rushed for more than 50 yards and Freddie Kitchens finished with just 10 completions for 84 yards passing. It was a startling turnaround for an Arkansas team that was embarrassed 31-9 last week by Southern Methodist. But, just like 1995, Arkansas answered a humbling early season loss to SMU with a win.

Stoerner finished 16 for 31 for 200 yards and a rushing touchdown to go with his game-winning pass. Florida State 35 Clemson 28 CLEMSON, S.C. Peter Warrick scored three long touchdowns, including a Deion Sanders-style 90-yard punt return, as fifth-ranked Florida State (3-0, 2-0 ACC) squeezed past No. 16 Clemson (2-1, 1-1) to give Bobby Bowden his 200th win as Seminoles coach. In addition, he finished with eight catches for 249 yards as quarterback Thad Busby threw for 332 yards.

Florida State led just 28-25 when Busby hooked up with Warrick on an 80-yard TD strike down the right sideline. Georgia 42 Northeast Louisiana 3 ATHENS, Ga. No. 25 Georgia (3-0) protected its first ranking in two years as Mike Bobo threw for three touchdowns. Georgia scored on its first three possessions to build a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Hines Ward ran 63 yards on a fake punt to set up a touchdown in the first quarter and took a screen pass in the flat and raced 62 yards to the end zone early in the third period. Bobo completed 11 of 17 for 229 yards that also included a 72-yard touchdown pass to Corey Allen. North Carolina 40 Maryland 14 COLLEGE PARK, Md. Oscar Davenport starting instead of slumping All-ACC quarterback Chris Keldorf passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns. The No.

6 Tar Heels (3-0, 1-0 ACC) trailed 7-0 in the second quarter, but scored 10 points off two fumble recoveries deep in Maryland territory to go up 17-7 early in the third quarter. Maryland (0-3, 0-2) never recovered. Davenport finished 21 for 33. Stanford 27 Oregon State 24 CORVALLIS, Ore. Greg Cornelia bulled over from 2 yards out for a touchdown with 27 seconds to play to rally No.

21 Stanford (2-1, 1-0 Pac-10). Trailing 24-20, the Cardinal drove 78 yards in 15 plays for the game-winning touchdown. Air Force 24 Colorado State 0 FORT COLLINS, Colo. Blane Morgan ran for one touchdown and Rassed for one as Air Force upset to. 23 Colorado State.

Morgan ran for 89 yards and fullback Spanky Gilliam had 97 as the unbeaten Falcons (4-0, 3-0 WAC) snapped a five-game losing streak to Colorado State (2-2, o-i). Colorado State's Damon Washington ran for 155 yards. louclulow ii with 30 seconds to go rallies 12th-ranked Tigers, 31-28 By Mary Foster The Associated Press BATON ROUGE, La. Auburn tailback Rusty Williams knew he was standing 1 yard away from glory on last night. He also knew that with just 30 seconds left in the game and Auburn trailing LSU by four points, he could be 1 yard from despair.

The outcome? Williams went home a hero, diving in from his second touchdown of the night to give No. 12 Auburn a 31-28 victory over No. 10 LSU. "I just stood there thinking, 'If I score this touchdown I go down in history and I win the game against Williams said. The winning touchdown came after LSU (2-1, 1-1 SEC), which had stopped two fourth-quarter Auburn drives, was penalized for having 12 men on the field, giving Auburn a second down at the 1.

LSU had a final chance to tie and force overtime after driving to the Auburn 48, but Wade Richey's 64-yard field goal attempt was blocked as the game ended. Auburn was. more than Williams, though. Quarter-. back Dameyune Craig completed 23 of 45 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns against a defense which had given up just one touchdown in its two previous games and had not allowed a passing touchdown in 19 quarters.

"This was one of those games that had drama, and all the excitement of a game in our division," Coach Terry Bowden said after Auburn (3-0) improved to 2-0 in the SEC West. "Both teams felt deep down in their hearts that they wanted to win this one." The loss overshadowed another outstanding performance by LSU's Cecil Collins, who again filled in for Kevin Faulk. Collins rushed for 232 yards and two touchdowns including one with 13:34 to play that put LSU up, 28-24. "Unfortunately, I didn't do enough," Collins said. Craig, who was sacked five times, opened the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Fred Beasley four minutes into the game.

He hit Hicks Poor for a 25-yard TD less than four minutes later to put Auburn up 14 0. Williams, who had 47 yards on 14 carries, ran 10 yards to score the third Auburn touchdown 1:29 into the second quarter. "They played a great game," said LSU linebacker Joe Wesley. "It came down to who executed best. They did.

They won and it hurts."
