For example, a whole evening's discussion (or three evenings, for that matter) about the late Harold Ross, founder and longtime editor of "The New Yorker," would not only be fascinating, but entirely natural among his former friends and associates. This does not excuse, however, a half hour's "conversation piece" in which Ross' name creeps in toward the 'end after the following (our informal count): Harpo Marx, Mr.

D.F.W. David Lawrence. Maytr, I t-1 1 i 13 I Tuesday, Jane 29 I I TONIGHT I gerly await the weekly sessions "Information Please" conducted on radio, of all mediums, by a smooth talking gent, name of Clifton Fadiman. "noted writ- Vin Fannin? er, critic and raconteur." We haven't the slightest idea what Clifton has been doing in the time between (probably writing, criticizing and making like a raconteur), but we did look forward to his return as an emcee on the NBC radio network (KDKA, 7:30 p. last Sunday on a 'program called "Conversation." Well, lie anie back all right.

Flanked by such fellow authors, editors, playwrights and ranconteurt as Bennett Cerf, Alan Green and Marc Connelly, he presided over the darndest name-dropping session we have yet had occasion to hear. Under the guise of "conversation'' the show theoretically breaks Into the middle of an "intellectual" discussion and ends with the boys still busily rattling oft the names of celebrities within their ken or acquaintance. This was to be, said the advance notice, "conversation as a skilled art." Oh come now. We have had the privilege of entering into conversation with a great many of our betters at least three of whom ere discussed on "Conversation" and unless memory plays ungodly tricks, with the possible exception of Dorothy Thompson's night long exposition (hardly conversation) on her former husband, Sinclair Lewis (a mutual we don't recall a single pointed mention of WQED PITT6BT RGB CHA.VNEL 13 12 00 Test Pattern 1: 00 Children i Corner 00 Parents Dr. Spock 3.30 Test Pattern 00 The Two 6:30 Men Make History QED Concert 7:30 Sign Off WTRF-TV WHEELING CHANNEL 7 :00 10:00 10:30 10:45 11:15 12:30 1:00 1:30 2:30 3:00 3:30 4:00 5:00 5:30 Breakfast Club Din? Van Doren, Alexander Woollcott, Oscar Levant and an assorted few of lesser note. It is inconceivable that any one of the above named, let alone the baker's dozen, could be really "discussed" within half an hour's "conversation." If NBC is serious about this new program, and we hope they are, let it be exactly what its name implies. Let it be a conversation between intelligent, informed men and women (a woman is sorely needed in any such social round, we think) about a subject interesting to us all. Let's leave the name-dropping to the gossip columnists, broadcasters and telecasters, who will, we are sure, never encroach upon the field of "Conversation." We are deeply gratified by the favorable response by many readers to our comments on the Mary Kay and Johnny travesty imposecTupon the viewers of the "USSteel Hour." Mrs. Mabel Young hit the point with graceful humor when she suggested that the bright young couple "plant their feet firmly ori the stage, roll up their sleeves and flex their muscles." This, said Mrs.

"would at least indicate what they're driving at (more effectively) than the cutey-pie (present) commercial." "When we think of steel," says our correspondent, "we want to think of something substantial, even though it may be used in 'flimsies'!" Amen. It is Interesting to note, In passing, that Dr. Frank C. Baxter's fine lectures on Shakespeare (telecast here by WQED) are also being televised by the CBS commercial station in New York City. And by the way, wouldn't Sir Winston Churchill be surprised to find himself (under the pseudonym "Sir in the hands of an American television "nurse" named Janet Dean? Here's a show which bids fair to compete with "Our Little Stinker," or is it "Our Little (WDTV, 10 p.

Sundays). Finally, those of you who remember WDTV's 31 i i (Kiddie Castle) Steiner may be surprised to learn that she is now known as Mitzi McCall to her recently acquired agent and friends in Hollywood. Her husband Jack Tolen, former WDTV director, Is now production manager for TVs "One Man's Family" working with another former Pitts-burgher, Gino Conte, who produces the show. Maybe we'll seeing Mitzi's happy, smiling face on our screens one day soon. Hope so.
