TEST! MON1ALS. Cbtstal Speisgs, Dec, 5thT 1SC6. Gents, I take very great pleasure in affording my meed of praise to tbe practicability and adaptation ot yonr Star Cotton Gin and Condensers. The Gin we have is a seventy saw, with Condenser, and we drive it with the "American Horse Power." It runs well, making a fine article of Lint Cotton, and with six small mules will gin five bales per day, of ten hours. If tbe poerer was increased, or larger and better horses or mules used, it would gin seven er eight bales in same given time.

Hurriedly and respectfully, Geo. J. Morttmeh, (of Mortimer Baker.) EuzaeeTH Crrr, N. Nov. 12, 1SGC.

Dear Sir: I have been using for tb.9 last four weeks, the Cotton Gin and Condenser, which I have purchased from you, and am very much pleased with both. I hesitated at first about purchasing tbe Condenser, but after usins it to my entire satisfaction for a month, I must say that it cannot oe too nigniy recommenueo. i ours respecuniiy, Geo. D. Pool.

Beklts, keae Ivob, Noefolk pETJSBfiTiirna Uailboad, march 5, 18G7. isear oir: tiavinr promisea to mve yon mv opinion of thb "Star" Cotton Gin, I will now write to say, that in my judgment, it is without doubt, the best I have ever seen. It has been fairly tested in my section during the season just past, in connection with other celebrated Gins, and is ack nowledged by all to be far the best. I have Ginned one hundred and eight bales cotton, and the saws are in as good order as when I purchased it. The secus are so clean or lint, as to render thcru as easy to plant as peas.

It can pick cleaner and faster by far, than any Gin I ever saw. I had some difficulty in managing the Condenser at first. but soon understood it, and now I would not be without it for any reasonable amount. Messrs. K.

Biggs A.Ca, of Norfolk, sold my cotton, and they can bear testimony that no cotton was in better condition or sold for more money. In conclusion, I would rather pay the price for the Star Cetton Gin, than to use Buy other without charge. Truly, -i F. Vicke. Stuvfjcunokg.

Brians or Wood. We were shown by Mr. Alex. Sprunt, yesterday, a sample of spirits of wood manufactured at Shoe Heel; Bobeson county, by Mossra.

R. J. C. UcCaskill, by the new distillation process. Tbe spirits is beautifully clear and and is applied to many uses.

It is accounted excellent in cleaning machinery and metals of all kinds, and in the mixtuie of paints said to be equal to oil and spirits turpentine. The process by which this spirits is distilled, is eUiamlng the wood in a retort without the ap plication or water. In addition to tbe spirits a species of oil is also obtained, and a substance ed resembling pitch, though more brittle and jet like. The oil is said to servo tho purpose of a lubricator, and is excellent in its application to heavy machinery. An acid is also obtained in this distillation process, tho uses of which we have not learned.

Il moral of the Sheriff of Craven, We learn from tho New Berne papers that F. M. ILvjrEn, Sheriff of Craven County, lias been removed from office by order of General Sickles, for disobedience of orders. The disobedience consisd of declining to go to Jones County to execute a precept. The Journal of tJvmmerce says of the officer removed i No man in tho county is more popular limn Sheriff Harper, and in retiring from office be will rrry with him the good win lies of the community.

Tbe po.ition of sheriff is'not a pleasant ono at any. time at present It must be exceedingly disagree-ablo, especially for a civilian. 1 In more quiet days, Mr. Harper will loam how hit services are appreciated by the people of Craven County." Captain J. E.

Fleming, late of Tiddt, Flemixj A- has received tho 'appointment of sheriff. Of this gentleman, tho ame paper remarks Our acquaintance with Capt. Fleming in slight, but we have no hesitation in expressing the opinion that outside the native population no appointment could bare bcon made more aoctpablo to the community. Crops In Bowlh Carolina.) A gentleman who has very recently travelod through Sumter, Marion, Darlington and Chesterfield districts, South Carolina, reports that on an average in those counties the com crop is barely indifferent, and the cotton crop even4 worse in fact, bad. The people are somewhat despondent in view of this distressing con dition, yet the yield will bo greater than they oven hoped, after the heavy rains.

I T. narasBiaoxR. Jnst received for Account Book Work. and Tnxia Opebations. Tbe Mayor this city on Thursday received an order issued from Post Headquarters, and to ths effect that, in- accordance with instructions received from Headquarters, 3d Military District, all laws and orders imposing taxes upon draymen In the sove- Ial counties comprising this Military Post, except municipal tax of one dollar per month, are her by suspended." This order, we loam, was submitted to the Board of Aldermen, at a meeting of Uiat body daring the afternoon of the same day, and in presenting it bis Honor urged the passage cf an ordinance prescribing rates by which draymen shall be governed in their charges.

But the Honorable Board did not even give ths subject consideration, and simply heard with apathy the reading of the order mentioned. Formerly the municipal tax imposed upon draymen was three dollars per month, and they were subject to an additional tax under the Bevenuo Laws of the State. Then no regular rales wero prescribed to govern them in their charges, but it is undoubtedly ths duty of the Board of Alder-" men to take soma measures to this effect now, not only for the sake of uniformity but to secure the citizens against imposition and extortion. Scarcely a city or town exists in ths whole country where rates for charges are not prescribed for the gov- emment of draymen, cabmen, hackmea others pursuing like avocations, and such meas ures are certainly as much needed here as else where. We urge upon the Board of Aldermen a consideration of this subject and ths adoption of tas measures we have proposed.

I Direct Tkadk. There are now in our port is less than six vessels fivs brigs and ono barque With aa aggregate tonnage of 1,347 tons, 411 load ing for Liverpool and London with naval atores-j-pilncipally spirits of turpentine. This manifestation of an interest on ths part of our merchants in direct shipments, is a pleasing one. It has long been a matter of much surprise to us why tae direct trade was not more largely encouraged and a greater number of shipments raado to the old World. It parties In New York can purchase naval stores thera at an advance on the price hero, and realize a neat profit by shipping to foreign ports, wby cannot our merchants pursue the Bams course with equally advantageous results.
