Boyer, an alumnus of St. Vincent College and the University of Pittsburgh, and Dr. Stanley N. Cohen of Stanford University were recognized for their discovery of recombinant DNA the genetic engineering technology that paved the way for the modern biotechnology industry.

The pair have won a number of awards for their pioneering work, including the Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, the National Medal of Science and the $500,000 Lemel-son-MIT Prize. Boyer, an emeritus professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry at St. Vincent and master's and doctoral degrees in applied statistics at Pitt. District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. announced yesterday the formation of the Southwest Regional Computer Crimes Task Force.

Officers and agents with the FBI, Pittsburgh police, Allegheny County police and the sheriffs and district attorney's offices, already have been investigating cyber crime and tracking offenders on the Internet, Zappala said. The new unit will augment existing efforts, covering a 15-county region in southwest Pennsylvania. The 14 new task force members are Detective Lynn Have-lka of the Allegheny County display to drivers the speeds at which they are traveling. Statistics for District 12, which consists of Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties, show that from 1996 to 2001, there were 8,602 speed-related crashes resulting in 157 deaths. By Nate Guidry Pittsburgh Post-Gazette In an effort to reduce crashes and fatalities, District 12 of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has begun a "Safety and Speed Reduction Initiative" targeting area roadways with a higher than average number of speed-related crashes. The first location will be Route 51 in Rostraver. The initiative will use variable message system boards, a speed monitoring trailer and local law enforcement.

He was loved by seventeen grandchildren. Jim was born in Sturgeon, PA, on April 7, 1928. He was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in New Smyrna Beach and a former member of St. Alphonsus Church in McDonald.

He was a Korean War veteran, stationed in Germany. He graduated from Duquesne University in June of 1956. He worked at Duquesne Light Co. at several management positions for 36 years, until retirement in 1991. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and the Sturgeon Belgium Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Margaret McCaffrey; brother and dear friend, Francis; and nephew, Ryan Boynes. He had been ill for the last 11 years and had put up a gallant battle. He was an inspiration to all of us who loved him. She was a lifetime Episcopalian and a member of St. Thomas a Beckett Episcopal Church in Morgantown and was retired from Pittsburgh Public School District in research. She was also a veteran of WWII, having served as Captain in the US Army Corps.

She was a graduate of Western College for Women in Ohio and had a master's degree in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. She is survived by two sons and four daughters and spouses, Thomas and Judy Rodd, Rebecca Rodd and Joni Costante, Susan and William Case, Mike Furbee, Jessie and Rick Blaney, Elizabeth Rodd and Michael Kimble and William H. Rodd III; nineteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Rodd II, and her daughter, Mary Frances Rodd Furbee.

She worked on a number of research proiects at the Center for Philosophy of Science. Patty was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
