co-chronicler of "Show Biz" and author of the new book "Vaudeville: From the Honky Tonks to the Palace," is a man who has dis covered a way to play both ends against the middle with eminent success. Laurie w-rites about show business and then uses show business to sell his books. In this connection he arrived fittsDurgn yesterday to begin a round of radio and tele vision appearances upon which, needless to say, he discussed his new 509-page volume. If vaudeville was still alive veteran performer Laune would, without doubt, also be making stage appearances in behalf of His brand of showmanship is some thing altogether new to the book publishing business, but it has certainly proved effective. Tough Grind 4 "I nearly kill myself in the process," Laurie said, "but Abel Green (editor of the show busi ness paper Variety) and I figure we got more than -worth of radio and tele vision time for free when I was plugging our book 'Show The volume has now run through several printings.

Of course, publicity alone would not be enough; there has to be a good product. "Vaude ville" is a very exceptional product indeed. Its 48-page index lists practically every act known to vaudeville, and its pages are jammed with the inside stories of the people who practiced that great and now almost lost art Various Stories Some of the best stories are about performers long since forgotten by everyone, but Laurie, 'who has never forgot ten anything about show business and there are plenty of heretofore untold yarns about stars who will never be forgotten. Laurie was especially happy yesterday when he opened the current issue of Life magazine and found a precedent-breaking editorial devoted to him and to his book. Pittsburgh's Johnny Kirby just gave the NBC radio network in Hollywood his notice (he had a weekly Sunday program with Russell Armbruster's band on the Western section of the web) to concentrate on a night club act. Earl Brent, who put together the Betty Grable-Harry James turn, is working with Kirby on his songs and arrangements. Their sponsor has renewed the Organist Aneurin Body-combe-Announcer Bill Nesbit "Organ Melodies" on KDKA Wednesday evenings at 6:15. "I don't know whether you were at the closing of 'Pal Joey or not," writes Billy Catizone, the Nixon Theater maestro, "but I have never experienced such heart-breaking emotions reaching out over the footlights. To look at an entire company standing before you smiling like sunshine with tears splashing over their make-up was enough to melt the marble of Michelangelo.

Orpheus in losing Eurydice could not have felt a greater loss than this cast did for their show. "Perhaps people sitting in the rear escaped the aura of ties such as friendship fun on the road the closeness of working with each other the sound of applause after certain numbers the fact that never again will this particular group be together in its entirety. During the evening performance, the players hung on to their lines more deliberately, giving me the feeling down in the orchestra pit that perhaps they were thinking This is the last time I will say this' or This is the last time I will do A few tears trickled down this Roman nose and bit the rosin. I was not ashamed of them." For the third season, Francis Mayville will be the commentator for the pageant cantata, Harvey Gaul's "Babe in Bethlehem," when it is presented for the tenth year at the Calvary Methodist Church on the Northside Sunday evening, December 20.
