Does it use much juice when only the time display is on? When the timer is set for future recording? When recording? Is it the same as a television uses? 2.

Does "search" damage the head? 3. Can a VCR be rewired to accept a remote control? 4. The picture seems clearer when viewing without the VCR on; does this mean it's hooked up wrong? 5. I have a one-year guarantee and a bit of snow now and then. Should I have my VCR checked and cleaned up now before my year is up? R.B.D., Orchard Park, N.Y.

Let's answer your questions by the numbers: 1. Your VCR doesn't use much electricity at all especially when it's lying dormant, with the timer set or unset. The equivalent would be a small electric clock. The VCR uses more electricity when it actually is recording, because the circuitry then is powered up and working. It still doesn't use as 4.

If the picture is clearer without the VCR on, and you're using it to watch off the air, there's a chance you haven't hooked your antenna into your VCR properly, or you don't have the stations on the VCR fine-tuned well enough. If you mean that a signal recorded off the air isn't as clear as an original off-the-air signal, that's; only natural. A bit of signal quality is lost in the recording firocess less on fast tape speed (short playing ime) and more on slow tape speed (longer playing time). 5. Unless something seems seriously wrong, your machine probably doesn't need service.

"A bit of snow now and then" sounds more like a slightly dirty head, which you can remedy easily and quickly with one of the reputable (big-name) brands of head-cleaning cassettes. But under no circumstances use the kind of cleaner that has cotton swabs and requires you to poke around inside the machine. I have a standard VHS-format recorder. Is it possible to record from another VHS recorder that is, to copy another tape? If so, how? Can I copy a tape from another recorder that uses -inch tape by using my machine, which Want Connection much as a television in full throttle, however, because the big power requirement in a TV is the electron gun (or guns), which fires a stream of charges at the inside of the screen to produce the picture. On a VCR, there's no gun and no screen; instead, signals are merely transferred to a tape.

2. The "search" function can affect the head slightly, if only because the tape is moving past it at about nine times normal speed. The tape is also in much closer proximity than it is during full-speed rewind and advance. But unless you're using really wretched tape with lots of imperfections in the recording surface, the damage is usually so small as to be negligible on any single pass. Odds are, in fact, that the tape will suffer more wear from excessive searching than the head will.

3. Theoretically, any electronic device can be rewired to accept any control in the world but not necessarily cheaply or easily. And what you propose would in all likelihood turn out to be more expensive than an entirely new machine and void the warranty on the old one. Call 443-3911 Weigand Contracting wmm uses -mcn tape? Castile, N.Y. You can do all of the above, and easily. Between any two recorders whether both are VHS, or one or both are Beta, or one or both is in the -inch "U-Matic" format just feed cables from the "video out" and "audio out" parts on Recorder A to the "video in" and "audio in" parts on Recorder B. Then play the tape on Recorder and record that output on Recorder Bn The format of the first tape is immaterial, and here's why: The tape merely holds the signal; once that signal is processed by the recorder and fed to an output port, the size (and shape) of the tape it's coming from makes no difference. It's long been left behind, electronically speaking.

Random signals: It's record-setting time in videoland, hot-cassette category. One of the ways studios realize whether they have hot properties on their hands is by measuring retailers orders before a film actually is released on tape. Previous star in the category had been "Flash- dance," the Paramount offering that drew 150,000 pre-release orders earlier this year. Retailers were eager for the tape because they knew it would move quickly at $39.95. The new winner is "Raiders of the Lost Ark," coming out in early December from Paramount at the same price.

That it's moving quickly isn't surprising: It's a popular title, and the release was targeted for the holidays. What is, surprising is its new benchmark for pre-issue orders: a half-million copies, or 230 percent higher than the record "Flashdance" set in the same period before release. The "Raiders" order breaks down into 420,000 cassettes and 80,000 discs. (Disc copies, by the way, will sell for $10 less than cassettes.) Paramount obviously knew "Raiders" was going to be big. But it's a safe bet they had no hint that the demand would be this immense.

It's offering specially packaged cassettes of seven titles, mostly at prices far below their original suggested list. Foremost among them is "Tron," the computer-animated eye-popper that got far less attention than it deserved in theatrical release earlier this year. Disney did the film no favors by releasing it on cassette at $84.95, but finally seems to be wising up by pricing it at $39.95 for the holiday promotion.

Ditto the prices, before and after, for "Dumbo" and "The Black Hole." Priced at $29.95 are four collections of Disney cartoons: "A Walt Disney Christmas," with a you-know-what theme; "The Adventures of Chip 'n' "Kids is Kids," featuring Donald and his nephews and narrated by Professor Ludwig von Drake; and "On Vacation with Mickey Mouse and Friends." Nice seasonal touch: The cassettes come packaged in silvery gift boxes along with a little golden Mickey ornament for the tree. ft 4 llnrbht with lb ir: EUREKA r.
