Tebbetts ciation will get activity under way for the new season with a program at the Knights of Columbus hall, 450 Lincoln Avenue, How They Shape Up This is about the time of 'the year that all sports editors and baseball experts unfurl their typewriters and bang away with reckless abandon on what they believe will be the outcome of the major league races this season. Some have beaten the gun by announcing their selections early, but leave it to Abrams to always manage to get in right under the wire. Without much further ado, we dispense with the uspense and set the stage for the arguments to rage by presenting the following: NATIONAL LEAGUE 1 Boston Braves: Additional infield strength, balanced power and improved pitching put Billy Southworth's crew in a position to take it all. 2 St. Louis Cardinals: No stumbling start anticipated this season.

Good pitching will keep club in running all the way. Only drawback may be age catching up with Redbird stars. 3 New York Giants: Home run champs will win many a game by overpowering the opposition. Pitching, th Achilles heel, in what is otherwise a pretty fair ball club. 4 Brooklyn Dodgers: Dem Bums have youth, speed and Leo Durocher.

Loss of Dixie Walker and Muggsy Stanky won't help. Pitching still "5 Dime" variety. 5 Cincinnati Reds: Ewell Blackwell is the big boy, both literally and figuratively. Johnny Neun has other young pitchers, a team that plays heads up ball and an unlooked for punch. 6 Pittsburgh Pirates: Solid man at the helm in Billy Meyer.

Pitching improved, but not enough. Infield may be big headache. Hitting power may overcome many difficulties. 7 Philadelphia Phils: Eppie Miller and Emil Verban tighten defense noose around second base. Pitching not bad, but lack of power may hurt.

8 Chicago Cubs: Only team in National League asleep at the switch during the winter. Little or no effort was made to make Charley Grimm and the Cub fans happy. AMERICAN LEAGUE 1 New York Yankees: A good ball club in 1947 was strengthened during the winter months. Ed Lopat, Whitesox fugitive, may mean the difference in the pennant race. 2 Boston Redsox: Any time Joe McCarthy is around managing a club, pay respect.

If he can piece together any semblance of a pitching staff, the Bosox will be tough. 3 Detroit Tigers: Steve O'Neill's pitching will be the best in the majors, but infield and hitting are spotty items. Will cause plenty of trouble. 4 Cleveland Indians: Bob Feller, great as he is, can't carry the burden alone. Infield, built around Mr.

Boudreau, excellent. Balance of club weak. 5 Philadelphia A's: Venerable Connie Mack will be a thorn in many a side with a fine, young pitching staff. Lack of speed and punch put team on debit side. 6 Chicago Whitesox: Nothing much here, but they appear to have more than Washington and St.

Louis. 7 Washington Senators: Club in process of rebuilding. Like Whitesox, nothing much. 8 St. Louis Browns: There are several clubs in the Triple A minors better than the Brownies.

Poor Zach Taylor. Sutherland Ouned No Stock Dr. Jock Sutherland held no stock in the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was given an option on part of Bert Bell's stock when he signed his contract, but this was cancelled when Bell sold out upon becoming commissioner. Art Rooney and Barney McGinley are the only stockholders.

Jock got 25 per cent of the profits in addition to his salary the past two years. Fame Is Fleeting Dept. Little Al Gionfriddo, who provided one of the most thrilling moments in the history of world series play last year, has been cut loose by the Brooklyn Dodgers. The least the Bums could have done was to keep little "GI" around to have him pointed out by the fans as the fellow who made the spectacular, unbelievable catch of Joe DiMaggio's drive in the sixth game of the classic Citation Will Turn Tables Look for the Kentucky Derby glamour horse, Citation, to turn the tables on his racing rival, Saggy, when they meet in the Chesapeake Handicap at Havre De Grace Saturday. Saggy won over the six-furlong route last week, but Citation will come out on top in the longer mile and sixteenth route Saturday.

Watch for this, but don't bet! In the Mail Box 'Dear Al: I see by the newspapers that another committee has been selected to view what the other four or five committees are trying to find out about what's wrong with Pitt football. Why can't we simply go back to the old days when the Panthers won their games and didn't require any committees to investigate things?"
