Veteran actor Ed-uard Franz gives the show a boost with his guest starring appearance as Olivia's gentlemen-uncle, who comes to visit during a time when his spirits are low. Grandpa Walton tries to interest him in fishing but it takes the talkative divorcee Cordelia Hunnicutt to bring Uncle Cody around to his old self. It's a lovely hour, quiet and thoughtful, beautifully played by Mr. Franz and Danna Hansen as Mrs. Hunnicutt.

The live hearings held earlier today will be broadcast here in their entirety on tape, with NPACT (National Public Affairs Center for Television) correspondents James Lehrer, Robert MacNeil and Peter Kaye as anchormen for the telecast.

10:00 p. m. OTj CD-Music Country. (Premiere). Fast-moving, visually interesting country music show from the Nashville, area premieres tonight, with six more to follow during the summer months.

Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Reed, Loretta Lynn and many others perform in front of country stores, old mills, river sternwheelers, bars and in Nashville's Printer's Alley. The cameras catch a flavor of the locale, and shots of grinning locals mesh with the lovely scenes of winding rivers, green grass and fiddler in the sunset. 10:00 p. m. The Streets of San Francisco.

Stefanie Powers is cast in the dual role as a young woman Mulhare possesses and murders, and her lookalike replacement whom the middle-aged Lothario groom in a Pygmalion-like manner. I saw the movie, "Bless the Beasts and the Children," and I just know that Billy Mumy, the guy who played the teenaged leader-type in the movie, was the same one who used to play in the TV series, "Lost in Space," as the little boy. I'm ready to burst because my friend says I'm crazy. C. M. A.

Just show your friend this answer. Billy Mumy was indeed the lad who played one of the leading roles in Stanley Kramer's fine and underrated film, "Bless the Beasts and the 1 1 Mumy also played the little boy in "Lost in Space." Q. My family is studying Kung Fu and Karate and I thought it would be fun to write David Carradine, and send him a picture of all of us in our garb for Kung Fu. Where could I address a personal letter to him? I'd like his home address. Incidentally, the group consists of my two teenaged boys, a girl, my husband and myself.

15. "If so," Crosby told me, "we think an early October starting date is realistic." The station might even De Ufi ready sooner, Mr. Fanning but it is felt that it would be best to let the networks launch their new season prior to the Channel 53 return. Crosby, who owns KEMO-TV (Channel 20) in San Francisco, pointed out that the Ivory Ave. facilities installed by AVC Corp.

in studios originally built by WENS-TV (Channel 16) back in 1953, are believed to be fully operation-el. "However, as the sale has not been approved and we do not have our license, FCC regulations prohibit even so much as a dry run at this time," Crosby said, UNDER AVC ownership WPGH-TV was on the air for about a year, finally folding and going into bankruptcy on Aug. 16, 1971. There is reason to believe, Crosby said, that part of the coverage troubles of the AVC operated station were due to the fact that the antenna mast had a slight lean, which sent the signal into the ground in one direction and off into the blue in another. "We have arranged for a thorough check on this by experts from the manufacturer of the antenna just as soon as we are allowed to operate the equipment," the prospective owner said.

The station will come on with 3.1 million watts (as compared to 315.000 watts for VHF channels 7 through 13) and, if the mast is correctly oriented, should cover about the same area as the city's three VHF outlets. Crosby also notes, with evident pleasure, that there are now many more cable companies operating in the area, all of which can relay the WPGH-TV programs, of course. NEEDLESS TO say, perhaps, WPGH-TV will be an independent station, that is not affilated with a network. This leaves Crosby and his people wide open for what he calls "counter programming," quite a bit of which, he hopes, will be live. "On KEMO-TV, we've had a lot of luck with live programming," he told me.

"We now have 23 hours weekly, ranging from rock music to church services," he said. KEMO also airs quite a few nationality and minority shows, including a German hour which has proved so popular it is now being taped and sent to Los Angeles for telecasting there. There is also a popular black-oriented hour. "We have telecast quite a few church services, including an entire Roman Catholic Mass, and we have had quite a bit of success with programs featuring local talent," Crosby said. Naturally, if sponsors can be found and arrangements made with the colleges and schools, Channel 53 "will carry as much local sports as we can line up." Such play-by-play coverage Is expensive, of course, so sponsorship will be a prime consideration.

FOR ITS film and tape shows Channel 53 will rely heavily on off-network serins (those which have had network runs), which cannot be aired in prime time on VHF outlets (Channels 2 through 13). UHF is not controlled by the prime time access rule, so Crosby could, for instance, telecast re-runs of "Dragnet," the original "Perry Mason" or any other onetime network series during the 7:30 to 11 p. m. time period. "One thing you can be sure of, we will have lots of feature movies." Crosby said with a grin.

"They will be vintage features for the most part, both American and foreign-made, for which we've gained a large audience in San Francisco," he said. "And when I say vintage, I mean just that," he added. "When we show a John Wayne picture, Wayne will be playing a teenager," the jovial broadcaster explained. "DON'T TAKE that too seriously," he said. "We'll have newer ones, too." One thing in the film line has been set, however.

The popular "Horror Show" on old Channel 53 will be returning as a Friday night feature, with local host Levann Williamson. Crosby is still puzzling about his news format. "We obviously don't have the kind of money needed to compete with the VHF stations in news programming, but we will schedule some kind of local, live news and sports on the air in a non-conflicting time period," he said. That's the state of things on Ivory Ave. (North Side) as of this writing.

Any delay in FCC approval would, of course, put off the air date for a like time. I'll keep you informed. MORE BRIEFLY: Aside to Mrs. G. S.

"Sale of the Cen-ury" was axed by the network, not Channel 11. "Wizard of Odds" replaced it on NBC Gary Sandy, who plays Stace Reddin on "Secret Storm," will be in Pittsburgh stirring the suds for the CBS soap on Aug. 3. Senator Sam Ervin and Senator Howard Baker of the Watergate hearings, will be the guests on a special one-hour edition of "Face the Nation" this coming Sunday, s'arting at 11:30 a. m.

on Channel 2. The live telecast will originate from Washington, D.C. The launch of the second Skylab mission this Saturday will be carried live on all three networks. Coverage on NBC (Channel 11) begins at 6:45 a. m.

and continues until 7:30 a. m. ABC and CBS will start at 7 a. also ending at 7:30. Viacom, responsible for the international telecasting of the Miss Universe Pageant, estimates that it reached a new high of 100 million viewers, from Iceland to South America and from Europe to Japan.
