Telling developments prevail tonight as the Bradfords demonstrate how difficult family relationships can be under the pressure of independence. With Abby enrolled as a full time PH.D. student and the rest of the clan all off doing their own thing, poor Nicholas feels neglected and gets into trouble seeking attention.

(60 min.) 9 p.m. CD CD IS) Wednesday Night Movie. "The Betsy." High class hokum about a car manufacturing dynasty presided over by a lascivious, power-hungry Laurence Olivier. The script, based on, Harold Robbins' potboiler, would embarrass most soap opera writers, but Olivier plus a topnotch cast including Robert Du-vall, Katharine Ross, Tommy Lee Jones and Kathleen Beller throw themselves into it with abandon. (2 hrs.

15 min.) 9 p.m. (Q) GD CD The Last Convertible. Part III. In tonight's episode of this romantic of the World War II generation, adapted from Anton Myrer's bestseller and starring Bruce Boileitner, Vic Morrow, Kim Darby, John Houseman and Sharon Gless, the Harvard boys are busy with careers, marriages, fears, and dreams gone astray. Only Russ (Perry King), the writer, refuses to grow up, while good old reliable George (Boxleitner) continues to hold the gang together.

(2 hrs.) ing the premiere. Joe Regalbuto brings to Streeter exactly the right blend of ambition and small-mindedness the role requires. And passing judgment on them all is Tim Thomerson, as Johnny Danko, the mailroom clerk whose experience with the company has given him cause to rejoice that he is a sixth grade dropout Charlie Hauck's script for the pilot quickly established the tone of the series. The first case to which the associates are assigned, vs. Our Lady of Mercy," has them defending a condominium contractor's plan to tear down a 200-year-old church that has been declared a national landmark.

And when Kerwin expresses a concern for mankind, Streeter curtly informs him that "unfortunately, they're not our clients." Hauck, however, saved the best for the last. Recalling his decision to marry, Emerson Marshall (Hyde-White) states that he faced a choice between a brilliant, aggressively determined, very attractive woman and a more or less plain Jane who promised to love and care for him all their lives. "I picked the latter," he said, "and she has kept her promise." Asked about what happened to the former, he grinned, sat back in his chair and said: "Margaret? She's the prime minister of England." By WIN FANNING Post-Gazette TV Crtttc Wilfrid Hyde-White, who stars as the senior partner in the Wall Street law firm that serves as the setting for "The Associates," readily admits in the premiere that he makes his best decisions when he's asleep. Maybe, but the producers of this new ABC series, who also gave us "Taxi," must have been wide awake when they obtained the services of the 76-year-old English actor to helm Bass Marshall. Excellent as the supporting cast is, without Hyde-White's superb sense of Post-Gazette Review timing and delightfully wry manner "Associates" would be just another youth-oriented lawyer stanza.

He is as necessary to this show as his contemporary, John Houseman, was to "The Paper Chase" which failed despite, not because of his participation. The title applies to three law school graduates who join the prestigious firm on the lowest rung of the ladder to success. They are Martin Short, as Harvard-educated idealist Tucker Kerwin; sexy Shelley Smith as Sara James; and Alley Mills in the role of Leslie Dunn, the proverbial patsy. The trio is under the aegis and at the 1 mercy of the firm's newest partner, Eliot Streeter who wins his stripes dur 11:30 A.M.
