He studied under composer Alexander Glazunov at the St Petersburg Conservatory and was a child prodigy on the piano, sharing the same teacher as Vladimir Horowitz. After the Bolshevik Revolution, he left Russia and went to study with Ferruccio Busoni in Berlin before embarking on a career as a concert pianist, giving the European premiere of George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in in Paris in May 1928. "It was the singer Boris Chaliapin who recommended to him that he go to America 'to do a tour, and there he met the ballerina Albertina Rasch whom he married," said Mrs. Tiomkin. Tiomkin accompanied his new wife to Hollywood just as the talkies were catching on, and soon he was invited to write film scores, particularly Westerns.

His last project, completed in 1972, was a joint U.S.-Soviet film on the life of Tchaikovsky. After that, he retired. His first wife died in 1967 and in 1972 he married his secretary Olivia Patch. 85, the Oscar-winning movie composer whose lush Hollywood scores evoked the colors of his native Russia and were familiar to millions of Americans, has died at his London home. His wife, Olivia, announcing Tiomkin's death yesterday, said her husband had been bedridden since a fall two weeks ago in which he fractured his hip.

He died early Sunday morning and will be buried tomorrow. During a Hollywood career that spanned four decades, Tiomkin won four Oscars, including two for the classic 1952 Western, "High Noon," starring Gary Cooper. They were for best score and best theme song, "Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darlin'." His other Oscars were for the scores of "The High and the Mighty" in 1954 and "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1958. He also collected 24 Academy Award nominations for a number of movies. His sweeping melodies adorned more than 160 movies during the golden age of the Hollywood studios.
