Since the fabulous Satchel Paige has made more farewells than Sarah Bernhardt and Fritzie Zivic combined, we're not going to bid au revoir to the old man of the mound. In fact, we wouldn't be a bit surprised if some major league club picks him up anytime within the next ten years. Whether he is 44 (as he claims) or 60 years of age as some people say he is, 01' Satch will go down in most books as one of the top pitchers of all time.

This statement goes even if Paige had never made the major league grade. who was drafted by mistake last year by the Detroit Lions, and whose name was returned to the big board. He's a terrific runner, but there's one catch. The halfback is also a star on the diamond and may not fancy pro football. Steelers Finally Spot Cameron Johnny O'Brien, a Jeannetle boy, who played end at the University of Florida, was grabbed in the seventh round and Halfback Taul Cameron, big name star from UCLA, who was overlooked for a long time, was the No. 8 selection.

Chiefly upon the recommendation of Johnny Miche-losen, Pitt's backfield mentor and ex-Steeler boss, End Joe Zombek of the Panthers came to Rooney U. as No. 9. And Halfback Lou Cimarolli, due to resume classes at Titt after Navy service of two years, was nabbed No. 11.

Tri-state district athletes were in demand from the start. Bernie Faloney, East Carnegie Agent Will Decide Whether Steelers Obtain Lattner JOHNNY LATTNER Notre Dame halfback. Star Notre Dame Canadian Teams PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 28 Johnny Lattner, brilliant halfback of Notre Dame, will make a public appearance in Pittsburgh only ten days after being picked as the No. 1 draft choice of the Steelers in the National Football fogging 'em in for the Pittsburgh Crawfords at that time.

Thirty years later we had the pleasure of watching Satch called on to do a relief trick in the All-Star game played at Cincinnati last July. Paige's once-feared speed ball was gone but he was still good enough to fool a few hitters with what he now calls his "hesitation" pitch. Paige's $25,000 salary had more to do with his release by the Orioles than his age did. Even a 25 per cent cut would have left him a high-priced performer at 500. We still think he's worth every penny at the gate.

Last Call on Sports Show Ducats The up-coming Post-Gazette Dapper Dan Sports and Vacation Show at the Hunt Armory on February 5 to 14 inclusive will find the advance ticket sale at the cut price of $1.25 coming to an end on February 1 at midnight. This means that there are only four days remaining, including today, in which to purchase tickets in advance at a saving of 40 cents per ducat. Daily admission price for the ten-day show is $1.65. The bargain idea of $1.25 tickets hit a responsive chord with the thousands of outdoor sports and vacation enthusiasts in the district. Orders have been coming in from all sectors, some of them as far as 200 miles away.

Hunting and fishing organizations, and they number several hundreds, are forming parties to come in on various days for the big show which will be headed by Florence Chadwick, conqueror of four European channels. Organizations which have not sent in their orders can still do so at the $1.25 ticket price which" entitles-- them to admittance any day during the teniplus being eligible for numerous handsome prizes to be handed Lattner in Shape Could Help There was an element of surprise to the Pittsburgh Steelers' number one draft choice, Johnny Lattner of talent lottery here today. The 195-pound Chicago boy, who has garnered all sorts of collegiate laurels, including the Maxwell and Heis-man Awards, was passed by five other clubs. Originally Coach Joe Bach had planned picking Steve Meil-inger, 6-foot-4 Kentucky star, who is a great pro end prospect, but has also appeared in the backfield. Redskins Take Meilinger The Washington Redskins were delighted that the Steelers switched to Lattner.

They followed Pittsburgh in the draft and immediately selected Meilinger. "We need defensive back-field strength and Lattner can go both ways," Coach Joe Bach asserted. "If Art De-Carlo goes into military service we would really be in trouble. I now plan to switch Jack Butler to his old college role of offensive left end." To the surprise of nobody, Quarterback Bobby Garrett of Stanford was the bonus pick. In another proof of the old saw about the rich getting richer the Eastern Champion Cleveland Browns won the "Pill" and put the finger on the star passer despite the fact that they have the great Otto Graham and George Ratterman.

Coach Paul Brown intimated Garrett or Ratterman would go on the trading block. The second and third picks of the Steelers also aroused some comment. Pat Stark, 6-foot, 185-pound quarterback from Syracuse, No. 2, had a broken leg as a sophomore and a broken jaw in the recent East-West game on his form chart. End Tom Miner, 6-foot-4, 225-pound end from Tulsa, No.

3, is reported already signed by the Canadian League. Miner a Tlacekicker, Too Miner will give Nick Bolko-vac and Elbie Nickel competition for placekicking work, as he boots kickoffs, points after touchdown and field goals. He is reported to be an excellent pass receiver short or deep aerials. The Steelers were blanked on the fourth and fifth rounds, as they owed these choices to the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers, respectively. Syracuse Tackle Lester 1 1 a from Masontown, a brother-in-law of Ted Dailey, former Pitt and Steeler end, was No.

4. Guard Robert Hantla of Kansas made the trip on paper from Pittsburgh to 'Frisco as No. 5. When they got back to picking for themselves, the Gold and Black gained a great prospect in one Hugh Laurin Pepper of Mississippi Southern, League. Located at his Chicago home early yesterday afternoon Lattner told the Post-Gazette via long distance telephone that he was more enthusiastic than ever about attending the Dapper Dan Dinner in Hotel William Penn on February 7.

He'd Already Heard News "A friend of mine, Red Noo-nan, heard the news on the radio and phoned me only a half hour ago," Johnny reported. "I finished first semester exams at South Bend yesterday and the second term doesn't start until Monday. I've always heard that the Dapper Dan af fairs were wonderful and this will make it extra special." The young athlete answered the barrage of questions fired his way without hesitation. How much pay will he want and has the Canadian League made him offers as reported recently? Would he have preferred playing in the Windy City with the Bears or Cardinals? What about that dislo cated shoulder suffered before the East-West game? When will Uncle Sam tap him on the shoulder for military service? Has he ever seen the Steelers play? "As you have probably read I have an agent, Julius Tucker, who is advising me about contract," Johnny stated. "I wouldn't presume to name a figure.

I just don't want to be embarrassed by coming out flatly and saying I'm worth such and such a price. "Both Vancouver and Ottawa in the Canadian League have contacted me. I have never met Art Rooney but had the pleasure of appearing on a March of Dimes program with Joe Bach last year in Buffalo. "Only time I have seen the Steelers play was on TV. They were good, too.

I played against Pitt in their stadium as a sophomore. We had some good games with the Panthers. From the little I saw of the city I think I will like playing there. Hurt in Last Scrimmage "It was my left shoulder that was hurt while practicing in California. I made a tackle and, believe it or not, it was on the last scrimmage the day.

It always seems to be that way, doesn't it? Anyway, it was my left shoulder and it wasn't hurt too bad. I just twisted a bit and it was back in place. It doesn't bother me any more. I have been playing basketball to keep in shape all winter and you know how much you must use your arms to do that. "No, I don't care particu- i LOU CI3IAROLLI Pitt halfback.

We were led to believe that the. Steelers weren't interested in Johnny for two (1) Because of a shoulder injury suffered in practice before the East-West game; (2) Because of Canadian League offers.

Apparently, someone must have learned Johnny's injury is not serious and the Canadian League offers were within reach of the local club's exchequer. A Lattner in shape could help the Steelers if he decides to cast his lot with the local club. Johnny was considered the top plum among the draft choices until he was injured. Did you see who got Bobby Garrett the quarterback ace every team wanted? Nobody but the Cleveland Browns. As the office wit put it, "That's like the Rockefellers hitting another oil well!" Why Did Fight Odds Tumble? Archie Moore won over Joey Maxim Wednesday night in Miami as most of the experts figured he would.

The 37-year-old light-heavy champ dropped Joey twice and cuffed him around pretty good most of the time. What disturbs us more than anything else is the report on the odds dropping from a high of 12 to 5 on Moore to 6 to 5 on Maxim Defore the fighters got into the ring. Moore's trouble with making the weight might have had something to do with it but not to the extent of drastic switch in odds. This is one of several unexplain-able facets of the mysterious ways of the ring sport. The victory was Moore's third over the Clevelander in what should be their last meeting.

01' Archie could always box as well as Joey and packed the much stiffer punch. Why, then, did those odds drop Back Says Tivo Contacted Him larly about playing pro ball in Chicago. As for my military status I am in the ROTC and am trying for a commission. If I make the grade I will probably be able to play one pro season before being called. Billiard Tourney Set The Western Pennsylvania pocket billard tourney will get under way next Monday at 8:30 o'clock at Parlors. George Brodie, Sky Twyman, Bill Benson, Don Hackett, Russ Perry, Bernard Rogoff, Ralph Kassoff, Joseph Olszak, Mort Goodside and Pete Murnak will compete. for Maxim. Those who know said the cash was being sent in from all parts of the country. The odds went down rapidly and our informant said bookmakers in several cities took the fight "off the boards." That meant they were not taking any more bets on the fight.

And, heie's a classic example of how the "angle boys" were out-angled. An official who worked the fight told us he was sitting at the ringside when a stranger said to him: "The fix is in. Some of the boys have the officials all sewed up." "I almost laughed out loud," the official, who asked that his I name not be used, said. "I had been told only a few minutes before that I was working the title fight." Pitt Players Happy Over Steeler Draf Both Pitt football players se lected by the Steelers in the National League's draft meet ing in Philadelphia yesterday are interested in the profes sional game. Contacted by telephone at his home in Carnegie, End Joe Zombek enthusiastically greeted the news: "Oh, man, so the Steelers picked me ninth.

That high? Wow, of course I'm interested." I've been sitting this thing out, hoping I could play in my home district. "I thought I might go to the 49ers, since they sent me a telegram the other day, asking if I would be available, my draft status and stuff like that." Wants lo Finish School In the absence of Halfback Lou Cimarolli, his brother Harry said from the family home in Bridgeville: "I know L.ou wants to play pro football, but he's interested first in finishing up at Pitt, where he has two years to go. "Lou is stationed at the Jack sonville Naval Air Station. He played football there last fall. He married his high school sweetheart, Thelma Bombas-saro of Beadling, six or seven months ago." Faloney, Felton Interested East Carnegie's Bernie Fa loney and Midway's Palph Felton, two district boys who made good in the University of Maryland backfield, also are ambitious to compete in the pay-for-play grid game.

Said Faloney, in a telephone conversation from College Park, "I'm flattered that San Francisco picked me on the first round. For one reason, it'll give me a chance to see my brother, who is a supervisor in a rubber plant at Phoenix, which is a lot closer to San Francisco than Pittsburgh. Coach Buck Shaw contacted me personally and inquired if I'd be interested in playing for the 49ers. He also asked about the knee injury that kept me out of most of the Orange Bowl game. The knee is coming along line.

Take a heat treatment every once in a while, but it doesn't bother me a bit. Would you please phone my dad? He's in Mercy Hospital where they operated on him about ten days ago." Both Marry Saturday Felton, contacted at his home in Midway, was happy that Washington had picked him via Green Bay's No. 4 selection: "It's a great break for me, as I wanted to play for the Redskins. That's not too far from Maryland and I've made a lot of friends in that area. Like Bernie, I expert to get in at least one year of pro ball before I'm called into service." Faloney, the All-America quarterback, and 1 1 Maryland's leading scorer, by a coincidence are both getting married Saturday.

Faloney will wed Jan Wallace of Silver Springs, in the University chapel at 2 p. m. and Felton will marry his high school sweetheart, Carol Davidson, at her home in Midway at 7:30 p. m. Boys' League Sought Adults living in the Paulson Playground district, East Liberty, who are interested in organizing a four-team baseball league for boys 14-16 years old are urged to attend a meeting at the home of James Barnes, 1323 Point View Street, Saturday evening at 7:30 o'clock.

Plans for the season will be made at that time. quarterback who played at Maryland, was grabbed in the first round by the 49ers. Center Jim Schrader, from Scott Town ship and Notre Dame, went to the Redskins on the second ballot. Three Tlayed Together An interesting sidelight to the selections of Zombek, Schrader and Faloney is that the three played together at Scott Township's Clark High School before traveling separate ways to college. Midway's Ralph Felton, a fullback at Maryland, was a fourth-round pick of the Redskins via the Packers, who owed Washington that selection.

Also in the fourth round the Bears took McKeesport's Francis raterra, who plaved briefly at Notre Dame. Three West Virginia Sugar BovJrr were picked, Fullback Tom Allman by flic Packers, Tackle Ralph Starkey by the Giants and End Bill Marker by Washington. In a pre-draft huddle Steeler President Art Rooney turned down a proposition by the Los Angeles Rams to give up three veterans, Halfback Woody Lewis, Tackle Len Teeuwa and End Norb Hecker, for Pittsburgh's first pick today.
