There may have been occasional lapses at the Stadium over the past two months, but they are forgiven and forgotten with "Show Boat." The Summer of 1952 goes into the record books on a final lovely, lingering note. Civil Defense Staff Listed The Health and Welfare Foun dation yesterday told Ross Lefller, county civil defense coordinator, that 1.229 professional persons have been detailed to the OCD's medical unit. In addition, there are 559 cler ical and 56S maintennace em ployes who can be assigned to emergency duties in Allegheny County.

Pitt Library Head Given U. S. Post Roy E. Headed by Ben Hibbs, editor of the Saturday Evening Post, the group is composed of persons recognized as outstanding experts in the publishing field. Billposter Discovers His Kind of Woman Jane Russell recently took time out from filming scenes with Robert Mitchum for "His Kind of Woman" to cut a huge birthday cake at a luncheon celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Southern California's largest outdoor advertising service. "Gosh, Miss Russell," cracked one of the men who had posted the big billboard of Jane in "The Outlaw," it's a pleasure to see that you're really not 10 feet tall and three feet wide!" mt if can deprive "Show Boat of its appeal or heritage. The skies opened up three times during the performance last night at the Pitt Stadium but very few left the premises; the biggest Monday crowd in summer opera history was practically still intact when the saga of Magnolia Hawks and Gaylord Ravenal finally had to be called at 12:50 a. m.

this morning at the fourth downpour, five minutes before the last curtain. And so part of Americana have the Cotton Blossom and its peo ple become that encountering them again in person has lost none of its charm or excitement despite The immediate presence downtown of a magnificent screen version. Make no mistake about it, a classic design is upon "Show Boat." Everything about this oft- told tale of the river has an im-1 perishable imprint, and genera tions yet unborn will be embracing the finest musical of our time. Its magics are industructible and its valentines are evergreen. Out at the Stadium, Mr.

Wil liam Wymetal and his associates have chosen wisely and well for their goodbye to another season. Nothing else could leave such a departing glow; the sentiments of Show Boat" are streaked with those of farewell, for it is like an old friend who must go now but will come back again. Every summer should close to the tumbling thunder of "Old Man River" and the misty lilt of "Only Make Believe." Given a good production and a cast to match. "Show Boat" will never send an audience home empty-handed. It has both at the Stadium.

The sets and the costumes are rich in color and steeped in atmosphere, and Mr. Wymetal's company has an affection for the whole thing that goes beyond the call of duty. Cap'n Andy is a part Mr. Gene Lockhart takes to his heart, and the warm and endearing qualities of the Cotton. Blossom's lovable skipper are squired safely home in Mr.

Lockhart's engaging per formance. Any time the appeal ing Miss Evelyn Wyckoff and the handsome Mr. Byron Palmer wish to return as Magnolia and Ravenal, the welcome mat will be out for them: they are at one with the traditions of the roles and their voices rapturously salute Mr. Jerome Kern's most enchanting melodies. Mr. O'Connor continues a prac tical dim-wittery in the presence of his long-eared companion that remains pretty amusing, especially when he is guarding his secret because he knows what happens every time he tries to explain about Francis, and one quick bit, when Mr.

Cecil Kella way isn't quite sure whether to address Francis as Mr. or Miss, justifies that fine character actor's plainly piecemeal perform ance. Miss Piper Laurie, in conventional ingenue role; Mr. Jesse White, as a bewildered track detective, and Mr. Vaughn Taylor, playing the head turfman who exasperates easily, lend certain two-legged dimensions to the four-legged comic monopoly here.

At the very end, when Mr. O'Connor has finally been successfully extricated from his difficulties. Francis says somewhat ruefully: "There's just one way to put an end to this. I'll never talk again." Don't you believe it. Not so long as Universal-International has his long ears to the ground.

Sk "THE ASPHALT JUNGLE" 8TERLIVG HATDEN. lOUIS CALHERNf Tech. Maria Montez, Jon Hall 'Francis Govs To Ihc Races' At the Fulton By HAROLD V. COHEN Let's face it, for better or worse. Francis is bound to be around for a stretch.

At least as long as Andy Hardy anyway. Not that the un-typical American mule or the typical American boy bear the slightest resemblance to each other, but somehow their respective staying powers strike a rather terrifying parallel. You can almost see Francis going on forever, perhaps even one day talking his way into the White House. Universal-International will probably guard against that possibility, however, on the grounds that there is no surer way oi reacning xne pome oi diminishing returns. And at the moment, so many other doors are open to an edu cated mule with the gif.t of gab that the political arena should be closed to Francis until the world is quite ready for him.

Of course, that may be sooner than ou think. Right now, his side-kick from Burma, Mr. Donald O'Connor, presently a civilian, and Francis re being introduced to the sport of kings in a picture labeled with tartling imagination "Francis! Goes to the Races." The single- tracked joke of a talking mule, however, spills a number of sur-i prising dividends as Francis, on direct line from the FBI (Feed Bag Information), gives Mr. O'Connor a seven-horse parlay. psychoanalyzes a nag into winning the big race for an impov erished breeder, sends gamblers and heads of the racing associa tion into consternation and other wise strikes a double-take terror in the whole simple-minded human race.

The laughs may not be quite spontaneous as they were in the original "Francis," when the jackassery hadn't yet worn thin, but nobody, will still be able to keep a completely straight face at the preposterously amusing idea which is at the root of this running gag. When Francis ex plains to the stewards why the avorite suddenly stopped dead at the finish line, it makes as Malikova Held Over At West View Midway Zenka Malikova, daredevil of the high wire, is in her second; week on West View Park's Midway.
