Diner In that little gem Guttenberg played Eddie the reluctant groom with a passion for foot ball He was so keen that' his wifedo be has to pass a football test before agree to marry her That really launched Gutten berg It helped him earn a part in controversial film about a nuclear explosion The Day After to be aired tonight such an awakening process People don't really want to think hbout it like a black sheep in the family or a skeleton in the closet We want to make believe not there But you know what? he says over a salad at Bar in Century City "It killed nie when I saw the picture I was Guttenberg plays a student who tries to hitchhike home Playing a role in this much heralded movie is a lucky break But it happen overnight chances 'of making it as an actor are so slim If you put a questionnaire out to a million people and said "Which job would you like: waitress doctor lawyer movie star rig driver carpen Everybody wants it But nobody really wants you to make it THEY want to make it "An acting teacher says it'd be great if you become But for the main part he's wishing HE got a the New York native says When he first came to Cali fornia he didn't land a part for five months He waited tables at arrell's Ice Cream parlor on Van Nuys Boulevard But his godfather' helped He does voice overs You know butter or Parkay' that kind of thing He makes a fortune at that And he knew a theatrical agent And he didn't sign me but he took me on Then there was Something for Joey and then Chicken Chronicles and then 1 went back to school in New Guttenberg says he didn like California "1 just got fed up I didn't like the people and 1 didn't like the business so I went back to school Before I knew it 1 gotta call from a casting director who wanted to put me in Boys from Brazil" So Guttenberg came back "I went and did a series called Billy for CBS It was about a Walter Mitty like kid who dreamed of being different things I did a coupla bad movies a coupla good mov He thinks for a moment over the thunderous din of the res taurant reality is it doesn't take much courage to go do Dallas as an actor If you're a creator different If an actor it take much brains or much courage to go do one of those shows You know what takes? It takes wanting to have a house and some nice clothes and some nice furniture and a decorator If what yod want out of a career then you' should go do Dallas and: Dynasty If you want some: courage and truth and to be adventuresome and try and make a contribution then go do something with Ex Taxi star back on stage Hirsch always speaks his mind See HIRSCH Page 3 Hundred East $64072396 in lease payments a filed peti Group seeking to buy KVEO the assets other than nor mal operating expense's were ordered frozen until the bankruptcy was settled A Dec 2 date has been scheduled on an application to sell the station's assets in Judge Bill Peden's United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas Recently the New York baseck eompany Hundred East Credit Corp filed a $6 million lawsuit in federal district court alleging that some station executives and stockholders defaulted on JUDD HIRSCH never given up my place here" says Hirsch a big bear of a fellow A scraggly beard not yet full grown droops from his chin and upper lip facial hair is pretty much a given for the Trigorm character jn The Sea Gull Last time Hirsch wore a beard it was for the part of the fast talking suitor Matt riedman in the Pulitzer Prize winning olly by Lanford Wilson That was also a Circle Rep play and Hirsch came close to win ning a Tony for his role in it (He lost out to John Rubinstein as the teacher of the deaf in Children of a Lesser God Hirsch is tall and zhis wide shoulders give him a rugged look' emphasized this cold morning by his brown tweed coat a carryall slung over one shoulder He wears sunglasses that are stained half way down so that he appears to be looking at the world through half shut eyes as sad as those of an abandoned beagle But Hirsch is not sad Not at all irst of all working which he likes with a need a taxi in the mornings be in the unch peop he he financial district where they re letting peo ple He smiles not really tated He did finally get a cab this morning it got him uptown on time residences in various parts of the country New York is what he calls home where he votes and has his license Hirsch resume is long and impressive On Broadway he was in Neil Barefoot in the Park and Chapter as well as olly or the he played in Hot 1 Baltimore originating the part of the night clerk and in Knock Knock and Prodigal He took an Oscar nomination for his role as the psychiatrist in the movie Ordinary People and appeared in Without a Trace and King of the Gypsies On TV there was naturally' Taxi which won him a couple ofgmmys for Best Actor in a comedy series as well as Delvecchio and various others Classical roles though are almost nota ble by their absence on the list There is no Shakespeare No Ibsen No No Shaw No costume or period pieces Hirsch always has been strictly a man for this century So what brought him to The Sea GulP love the he says simply I love the part Trigorin is a writer just like Chekhov and about as close to Chekhov as he could be a romantic and he was itchy itchy and discontented like most artists His people were the monied class They do anything anymore (at the time pf the play) except rest on their laurels They sit around the summer house and it's right at the begin ning of the Industrial Revolution Russian Revolution too In a lew years someorieTs' going to fly Up in the air In a machine And there will be cars Motor cars It was a time when science was poking its head up like a mushroom but science was some thing for others not them things they adored They loved things sturdy things made of metal or wood heavy stuff for example If you notice they keep talking about everything they had to them the past is terrific the future is horrific These people are going out of style out ofdate But this is a play about the human condition And these are very human people They seem to have everything but tap just below the skin of ariy character and you see someone who is 1 desperately unhappy or feels inadequate maybe seven years ago Lwanted to do this part I was even cast in it for a production at the Manhattan Theater Club Joe Chaikin was going to direct it and Leueen McGrath was to be the star I
