I'd like to have seen him back in the clubhouse, but I guess it wasn't in the cards." Mr. Hallahan grew up in Greenfield, not far from Forbes Field in Oakland, then the home of the Pirates. He played basketball at Allder-dice High School but once said: "Baseball was my first love and it will always be." He gave up his dream of becoming a major-league player because he did not consider himself big enough. "I got my second wish being connected with baseball," Mr. Hallahan said.r He took off from school one day, went' iob-hunting at Forbes Field and was nired as the visiting team batboy for a dollar a game.

Over the years, Mr. Hallahan saw baseball history made as the game evolved and facilities improved. He said in a 1983 interview, "Baseball never changes. You have the same characters. They make a little more money now." Mr.

Hallahan was a World War II Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Resutko Hallahan; two daughters, Virginia Schack of Oakland and Roberta of Penn Hills; three sons, Thomas of Oakland, Gary of Edgewood and Stephen A. of Penn Hills; and eight grandchildren. Crawford, of New Kensington, started as a salesman with Greenwald Auto Co. after graduating from New Kensington High School in 1931. He later was put in charge of the company's tractors division before being named president. He was a Mason, a member of Syria Temple in Oakland and the First Lutheran Church of New Kensington. While still a high school student, he had his paintings and pottery accepted for display at The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Compiled by Ernie Hoffman and their repair, clubhouse meals and snacks. Mr.

Hallahan, known on the team as "Hully," worked until the time he entered the hospital last month, said Jim Lachimia, a spokesman for the Pirates. The Pirates were planning to honor Mr. Hallahan for his half-century with the club and had a plaque prepared to present to him later in the season, when they intended to name the clubhouse after him, Lachimia said. The Pirates wore a black circular patch on the sleeves of their uniforms last night. On the black patch was a yellow letter H.

The company of Liebe Lettering in suburban Chesterfield in St Louis did the patch at the request of Pirates trainer Kent Biggerstaff and traveling secretary Greg Johnson. Jerry Risch, the visitors' clubhouse manager in St. Louis, got the patches put on yesterday. The Pirates, who will be in Philadelphia Saturday, will charter a plane Saturday morning for those wishing to attend Mr. Hallahan's funeral, then return Saturday afternoon for their game with the Phillies.

Pirates Manager Jim Leyland talked of Mr. Hallahan in taping the pregame radio show last night. "Obviously there are a lot of great memories," Leyland said. "And this baseball team certainly sends condolences to his family." Then Leyland's voice broke. He told broadcaster Lanny Frattare: "I can't do this." And the taping stopped.

Pitcher Bob Walk said, "I felt worse ITuesday when I heard he probably wasn't going to make it through the night. I came to the clubhouse today about noon, just to find out as much as I could. I feel like I've lost a relative. Maybe not a mom or dad, but like an uncle. He was a pretty special guy.

After deliberating about one hour, a jury acquitted Mahon, 26, of O'Hara, of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol, homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Karen M. Jacob of Fox Chapel. Jacob, 26, the daughter of businessman Ted Jacob, died of injuries she suffered when Mahon's truck flipped over in an accident on Free-port Road on March 5, 1989.

Deputy District Attorney Daniel E. Fitzsimmons tried to show that Mahon was at the wheel and caused the accident. Mahon's attorneys, Jonathan Jones and Philip A. Ignelzi, based' their defense on the theory that Jacob, not Mahon, was driving the truck. They accepted the fact that Mahon's blood alcohol level was tested at 0.265, but argued that he was not driving because he was too drunk.

Jacob's blood-alcohol was 0.04, considerably less than 0.10, the legal limit for drunkenness in Pennsylvania. The defense team suggested that the accident might have been caused by another vehicle that struck the truck. There were no eyewitnesses. Josey, a professor in Pitt's School of Library Information Sciences; and Walter Long, Pennsylvania's delegate to the National Adult Literacy Congress.

The council is holding the seminar in conjunction with the observance of Literacy Week 1991. Lee, Tony Norman and Don Hammonds will receive the third award, for a Black History Month series on the Pride Harrison family. Gas reformulation cuts lead pollution NEW YORK (AP) A study of snow from Greenland confirms that air pollution by lead plunged during the past two decades because of reduced use of lead additives in gasoline, researchers say. Scientists drilled about 35 feet to sample snow that had fallen at various times from 1967 to 1989. Tiny heart still beating Sarah Kelton spent her third day of life in Children's Hospital yesterday with a tiny transplanted heart pumping within her chest. Hospital spokeswoman Lynn McMahon said Sarah, the world's youngest heart- transplant recipient, remained in critical condition, which is normal at this point.

"She's doing as well as doctors would hope," McMahon said. Sarah, who suffers from a rare heart defect, was delivered early Sunday afternoon by Caesarean section at Allegheny General Hospital. Surgeons at Children's Hospital completed the transplant on the 5.2-pound infant, who was about a month premature, at 5 a.m. Monday. Truck hits, kills boy An 11-year-old Washington County boy was killed yesterday when he was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle in Union, police said.

Thomas Runco, of Route 88, Finleyville, was struck by a northbound truck at 3:50 p.m. when he attempted to ride his bike across Route 88 about a mile north of Finleyville, Officer Sal Calo said. The truck struck the back wheel of the boy's bike, causing him to fall forward and strike his head on the pavement. Runco was taken by helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:54 p.m. Calo said police did not expect to file charges against the truck driver, identified by police as David Kirk Wilcox, 50, of Venetia.

Teaching adults to read A panel discussion on successful efforts to teach illiterate adults to read and write will be held at noon Friday at the University of Pittsburgh. The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council seminar will include Arrest expected in shooting Pink jail designed to calm prisoners head, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., where she was in good condition yesterday. Her grandson was treated for a gunshot wound of the back and released at Uniontown Hospital. Police said they found a weapon in the house that they believe was used in the shootings. Fayette County authorities said they expected to make at least one arrest soon in the shooting death of a Uniontown woman and the wound-ings of her mother and son early yesterday.

Uniontown police would not identify the suspect nor speculate on a motive in the shootings, which were reported at 8:40 a.m. yesterday at a house on Collins Avenue. When police arrived, they found the body of Holly Duritsky, 34, the daughter of the woman who lives there, Drusilla Wilson. Duritsky, who lived next door with her son, was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound of the head, police said. Wilson, 61, and Duritsky's son, Jeremy, 9, also had been wounded in the shooting but were alive when police arrived, officers said.

Wilson, who also was shot in the GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Police were shocked by the high-voltage electric-pink walls of the city's new jail, but the designer hopes the color scheme will keep the inmates from seeing red. The decoration, which includes purple for steel doors and concrete bunks, was chosen by Dorothy Brun, the interior designer for Glendale's new $17 million Public Safety and City Court Complex. The complex opens Sunday. She said studies on the use of pink in other jails indicate it has a short-term calming effect on prisoners, compared to the usual institutional grays, browns and greens.

Why the purple accents? Brun said she wanted "something that would complement, and black was too harsh." Police said they were surprised at the color, but will be happy if it helps cure the blues that might cause problems among the unwilling occupants of the new building.
