Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Friday, October 18, 1991 MOVIE MOVIES MOVIE OPENINGS 'Cool as Ice' not too cool By Tony Norman Post-Gazette Staff Writer ubble gum rapper Vanilla Ice was born to emote in front of the camera, but the world's most hapless homeboy gets repaired by two inept mechanics. Johnny immediately falls in love with local beauty Kathy Winslow (Kristin Minter), an honor student who has nothing in common with him. Kathy's dad (Michael Gross) has taken the family into hiding in a witness protection program and is paranoid about Kathy hanging out with strangers. When the Winslows are discovered by two criminals, Johnny and his friends are recruited by Kathy to rescue her kidnapped little brother. Director David Kellogg tries hard to make a hackneyed script at least look good.

One could plausibly chop the movie into pieces and produce several outstanding Vanilla Ice videos. "Cool As Ice" is a no-brainer if ever there was one, but it has some heart and a lot of nice moves. If you're going "Cool As Ice" is rated PG for mild violence. It opens at Harmar, Village, Southland and Showcase East, West and North theaters.
