"We" is the cable company. The wire dictates what channels we can view (and, when it goes out, what we can't view). But what about the hearing part? TCI of Pennsylvania hopes to get a piece of that action with Digital Music Express, which the company will introduce today. It's an audio service that offers 30 distinct musical formats including rock, jazz, classical, country, reggae and rap. The 24-hour service dispenses with both commercials and announcers.

It will work much like a pay-movie channel in that TCI will install a converter box and charge an extra monthly fee on your cable bill. But Digital Music Express will play through your stereo speakers instead of your television set. "We will have an introductory period when we will be waiving installation. It should be available to more than 300,000 TCI customers starting today," said TCI's Evan Pattak. That encompasses most of the company's systems in Southwestern Pennsylvania, but Digital Music Express will not be available until summer for subscribers in Westmoreland County, the Kiski Valley area and some areas of Beaver County.

In Pittsburgh, sunscribers to the basic cable service will not be able to get Digital Music Express. Complete details on availability and price will be announced today at a press conference. People like myself who can't get Joni Mitchell and James Taylor and all that stuff that used to be AOR the album-oriented-rock radio format, we had to go somewhere. And I think a lot of us went to Garth and a lot of us went to George Strait." It didn't used to be that way. Kitaen used to be married to David Coverdale, the lead singer of the rock band Whitesnake.

Let's put it this way don't expect Mona Loveland to spin any of their recordings. As long as we're dropping names here, let's get one thing straight. Tawny Kitaen is her real monicker. "My real first name is Julie. And I told my parents when I was 6 or 7 years old that I was going to go by Tawny, which is my middle name." By now, such boldness should not surprise you.

"There's a little Leo baby in me," she said, speaking astrologically. "My mother is Irish and Scottish and my father is Russian. And I was the first born and my father wanted a boy and got a girl.
