A golf course isn't great unless it can hold up when it's not under pressure. Oakmont was not under pressure Monday and Tuesday. That was the Family House Invitational, not the U.S. Open.

The 34 pros, including some of the top PGA Tour pros, found no flexed muscles, no sharpened teeth. Just everyday old Oakmont wide fairways, member rough, but no windmills, whistles or bells. Did Oakmont hold up? In 68 pro rounds, there were only eight rounds under par (71). The lowest was the opening 68 by winner Nick Price. Only three subpar totals, 2-under 140, by Price and co-runners-up Chip Beck and Craig Stadler.

Beck was the only guy under par both days 70-70. Only three par rounds, but 10 rounds in the 80s. The sheer, raw power of the place is seen in some other figures: The highest score on any hole was only 8, and there were only two of those, by two different golfers. So the boxcar scoring did not come by disaster, but by a relentless accumulation of strokes. The tournament's average score was 75.12.

Keith Tinsley, formerly a Pitt football player and more recently a California car man, became the newest member of the Gladiators yesterday. He was added to the roster because of injuries to Russell Hairston and Brian Moran, both receiverdefensive backs. Tinsley is expected to play tomorrow. Tinsley was in training camp with the Gladiators in Orlando, this spring.
