Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Friday, June 17, 1988 Los Angeles Clippers is on list from which the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat will choose their veterans in the expansion draft -next Thursday. Other big-name players available will be Otis Birdsong, Kelly Tri-pucka, Walter Davis and Cedric Maxwell. Pirates Four seniors from St. Leo's College (near Jacksonville, Fla.) signed contracts with the Pirates: Outfielders Greg Sims and Scott Cowley and pitchers Brent Honeywell and Tom Studstill. Sims, who batted .299 with 50 stolen bases in 61 attempts, and Cowley, a .290 hitter, were draft choices and will be assigned to the Princeton-West Virginia Appalachian League.

Honeywell, a lefthander with a 7-7 record and 3.97 ERA, and Stud-still, a righthander with a 7-6 record and 5.49 ERA, were free agents. Tennis At West Kirby, England, John McEnroe continued his warm-up for a Wimbledon return with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Peter Lundgren to reach the semifinals of the Wir- ral International grass-court tournament. Johan Kriek and Kevin Curren were fined $900 each for racket abuse and using profanity during defeats at the Wirral tournament. At London, Mary Joe Fernandez upset Gabriela Sabatini, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals of the Pilkington Glass Championships, an important warmup for Wimbledon. The 16-year-old Fernandez next will face top-seeded Martina Navratilova.

Horse racing The entry of Tsarbaby and Digress was made the early 6-5 favorite as eight horses were entered for the $250,000 Ohio Derby tomorrow at Thistledown in North Randall, Ohio. Pro football The National Football League Players Association returns to federal court today in Minneapolis in its continuing effort to win unrestricted free agency. The NFLPA will try to convince U.S. District Judge David Doty that an impasse has been reached in contract negotiations between the union and management, said Carol T. Rieger, a Minneapolis lawyer representing the union.

If Doty rules that an impasse exists, he could grant the the union a preliminary injunction that would allow unrestricted free agency for about 350 players. Boxing Brian Baronet, 27, was declared brain-dead after his knockout by Kenny Vice on Tuesday night in Durban, South Africa, but his family has refused to let doctors switch off a life-support system. College basketball Forward Mark Stevenson, who was arrested twice last season, has been kicked off Notre Dame's basketball team. Stevenson was arrested in December on a charge of conversion in an alleged shoplifting incident and in January, a few weeks before his 21st birthday, he was arrested in a shopping center parking lot on a misdemeanor charge of underage drinking. College football The NCAA has found that the University of Oklahoma football program had 16 alleged infractions, most of them involving recruiting, between 1983 and 1986.

In the district The Oakland Women's Center will sponsor "run, jane, run," an all-female sporting event that will be held Sept. 8-11 at the Golden Triangle in conjunction with similar events around the country. The event will feature Softball, tennis, bowling, golf, a 5-kilometer run and a walk-a-thon. For information, call 648-2580. Quoting 'em Marc Buoniconti, paralyzed while making a tackle on the football field in 1985, told a jury hearing his lawsuit against The Citadel, the school's football team doctor and trainer: "I dreamed of having a normal life.

After my injury, all those dreams were shattered. My No. 1 priority right now is just to stay alive, to keep living the best I can." luobnihg BRIEFING Lemieux honored by Hockey News From local and wire dispatches Penguins center Mario Lemieux continued his domination of National Hockey League awards yesterday when he was named player of the year by The Hockey News.
